1 Rowan-Cabarrus Community College NA Curriculum Grant Advisory Meeting Minutes TIME AND PLACE: A meeting of the PN Advisory Committee was held on 12/10/13 in Room 4133 from 10-3 pm. PRESENT: Shelia Adams (Richmond CC), Ann Black (Montgomery CC), Debbie Cave (Surry CC), Jane Duncan (Gaston College), Katie Jenkins (Craven CC), Jenell Morris (Sandhills CC), Patricia Pence (Mitchell CC), Rhonda Pierce (Alamance CC, Tneshia Richards (Southwestern CC), Nina Schrenkel (Stanley CC), Mary Smith (Central Piedmont CC), Anna Talley (McDowell Technical CC), Censythia Whitaker (Cleveland CC). Regulatory Members: Carol Walker (NCBON) ABSENT: Denise Pate (Fayetteville CC), Robin Bradshaw (Sampson CC) PRESIDING: Cathy Norris (Project Director), Martha Freeze (Curriculum Development Coordinator) TOPIC I. CALL TO ORDER: II. REVIEW OF MINUTES The meeting was called to order at 10:05 am by Cathy Norris, Grant Project Director. The minutes of 10/21-13 were reviewed. Motion: Accept the minutes as distributed. M. Smith/ D. Cave: Passed III. OLD BUSINESS A. Information for Website C. Norris asked the members of the Advisory Committee permission to list their names and addresses on the Curriculum Revision Project Website. The listing will provide faculty members that are not participating in the Project a way to give feedback to the members of the group. B. Continuing Education Cards M. Freeze distributed cards for members of the committee to suggest topics for continuing education. The list was circulated for members to either check addresses or decline listing on the website. Cards will be collected prior to the end of the meeting. C. NAS-101 Course Description M. Freeze asked the group to review the NAS101 course description that was written at the last meeting. The group made one change to the course description: MOTION: Accept the NAS101 course description as revised. A. Talley/ C. Whitaker- Motion Passed.

2 TOPIC This course includes basic nursing skills required to provide safe, competent personal care for individuals. Emphasis is placed on person-centered care, the aging process, communication, safety/emergencies, infection prevention, legal and ethical issues, measurements, elimination, nutrition, basic restorative care/rehabilitation, dementia, mental health and end-of-life care. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills to be eligible to test for listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry IV. NEW Business A. NAS 102 Course Description The current NAS102 course description was reviewed. The committee discussed making the sentence describing the content of the course specific to the current NA II curriculum on the NCBON website. It was decided that the course description sentence should be a generic listing of topics, so that if the NA II task list changes, the course description would not need to be re-written. After discussion, the following course description was developed: This course provides training in Nurse Aide II tasks. Emphasis is placed on the role of the Nurse Aide II, sterile technique and specific tasks such as urinary catheterization, wound care, respiratory procedures, ostomy care, peripheral IV assistive activities, and alternative feeding methods. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and safe performance of skills necessary to be eligible for listing on the NC Nurse Aide II registry. (Attachment #1) B. NAS-105 Lifespan Changes After a brief lunch break, the group returned to discuss NAS-105, the Lifespan Changes course. The committee was asked if this course was still needed with the inclusion of expanded material on aging in the NA I and Home Health Aide curriculums. Most of the college represented in the committee do not offer this course, but Alamance CC does offer it in their certificate program and have enrollments of each offering. The course consistently receives positive evaluations from attendees. Since the remainder of the committee colleges does not offer the course and are unfamiliar with the course content, it was decided to delay discussion of this course until the next meeting. Rhonda Pierce will send a copy of the course description and content outline to M. Freeze for distribution Further discussion of NAS-105 will be delayed until the February meeting. Action: Pending

3 TOPIC c. Certificate Program The group discussed the Nurse Aide program. Colleges that currently offer the certificate program expressed concern about the lack of students that have completed the certificate with NAS101, NAS102 and NAS 103. There was discussion among members concerning including NAS 101 and NAS 102, since these courses will now contain the 12 hours required for a Certificate. NAS 103 could be offered as an additional or complementary course. Since the three course are now included in the CC Certificate program, this change would have to be approved at the state level. C, Norris talked with Renee Batts via phone. Renee said that she would have to check on this possibility and would report back at the February meeting. D. NAS-106 Geriatrics Discussion about the continuing need for NAS106- Geriatics was held. The group felt that the increased content on the elderly in the DHSR NA I curriculum and the Home Health Aide curriculum was sufficient. Clarification was sought from Renee Batts about the possibility of deleting this course. Renee mentioned that this course would provide an opportunity for additional certification as a Geriatric Aide, but that NAS-105 course would not. Because of the additional certification, the committee recommended keeping this course. After discussion, the following course description was written: Discussion on the inclusion of NAS101 and NAS102 in the Certificate program is on hold until further clarification if obtained. Action: Pending Motion: Accept the NAS-102 and the NAS-106 course descriptions as written. D. Cave/J. Morris: Motion Passed. This course is designed to enhance the knowledge of the Nurse Aide I providing care to the aging population. Emphasis is placed on person-centered care, stress management, health promotion, dementia/challenging behaviors, mental health issues, and end-of-life/palliative care. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and provide safe care for the aging population and are eligible to be listed on the NC Geriatric Aide registry. (Attachment # 2) IX.
