6 2007/2008 report The 2007/2008 Annual Report continues the very healthy report card the Federation has received for the last few years. Finances, member numbers, profile and community services have all grown and been supplemented by new Government project funding. Financially, the year has finished with a healthy operating surplus of $49,497 substantially above budget. The better than budget outcome is due to new income from sponsorship and government projects and a better than anticipated outcome from the Conference in Adelaide. The Conference profit also enabled a dividend of $61,476 to be distributed amongst the Discipline Groups (on a pro rata basis according to the number of their members registered as delegates. In 2007, the National Conference continued the model established for Melbourne in 2005 of a combined event made up of the Australian Conference of Science and Medicine in Sport, Sixth National Physical Activity Conference (in partnership with the Heart Foundation and supported by the Department of Health and Ageing) and Fifth National Sports Injury Prevention Conference (supported by the NSW Sporting Injuries Committee). The Adelaide event also included a Recreation and Sport Development Conference and the SMASA Sports trainers Conference. As well as these Conference partners the event also received the substantial support we come to expect and appreciate from Asics most particularly for the Conference research awards. The major research award, the Asics Medal, was won by Denis Taaffe from the University of Queensland. To commemorate ten years of partnership between SMA and Asics, Asics had special medallions struck for the winner of the Asics medal and for all previous Medal winners. The conference was attended by 1,186 delegates, 95 of whom travelled from overseas to attend. Organisation was undertaken by separate committees for each conference, with Dr Jill Cook chairing the ACSMS Committee, Professor Wendy Brown and Dr Jo Salmon Physical Activity and Dr Leonie Otago the Injury. SMA continued to enjoy strong financial support from our major commercial sponsors: Asics (who resigned for another five years at a higher level of support especially for the Conferences), Beiersdorf (Elastoplast Sport & Leuko), Novartis (Voltaren), Health Management Group (pedometers, heart rate monitors, x-vests and Power Breathe) and Symbion Consumer (Bio-Organics COQ10). This year Nestle became a sponsor for Musashi and Sustagen (previously owned by Novartis). This financial support continued to be complemented by on-going funding from the Department of Health and Ageing (DOHA) grants for sports injury prevention the National Smartplay injury prevention program and further funding grants to support the 2007 National Sports Injury Prevention Conference and to conduct a detailed review of the Safety Guidelines for Children in Sport. Services to the community in sports injury prevention were also enhanced by expansion in the Safer Sports Program (SSP), with more Sports Trainers and Sports First Aiders than ever (more than 5,500) gaining an accreditation in 2007/2008. The Safer Sport Program will be further strengthened by the appointment of Mark Brown to specifically manage the transition of SMA to a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and the appointment of Nello Marino as General Manager with overview of the SSP as one of his principal tasks. SMA s profile was again strengthened by the release of a community service announcement (CSA) this time promoting the Smartplay program. This CSA was financed by the Pharmacy Guild of Australia and Asics. The distribution of 800,000 Smartplay resources and 40,000 copies of the Children s Safety Guidelines to schools and sporting organisations will also help the profile as will the Department of Health s decision to print another 100,000 copies of SMA s Choose Health be Active: a physical activity guide for older Australians. In February, the Federal Minister for Sport, the Hon Kate Ellis MP, launched SMA s revised heat guidelines in Adelaide and 40,000 copies of these have been distributed to schools and sporting organisations. All SMA resources and all SMA program details are accessible through the national website and additional resources have been devoted to keeping website information current. 6
7 During 2007/2008, SMA s media profile was substantially strengthened by the funding of specific staff to work in this area. This resulted in a much greater number of media statements being released and more efficient follow-up. As a result there was more frequent comment to the media on a wide range of sports medicine, sports science, sports injury prevention and physical activity promotion matters by SMA s growing list of media spokespersons. SMA media has been tracked through media monitoring which is reported to members through the monthly Member E-Newsletter. On the publications front, Professor Caroline Finch has decided that eight years as Editor of the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport (JSAMS) will be sufficient and she will step down at the end of 2008, handing over the editorship to Professor Greg Kolt from the University of Western Sydney. Professor Finch s tenure has seen substantial growth for the Journal both in number of editions published (four to six), numbers of submissions received and in impact factor (increasing from 0.50 to 1.54). SMA continues to publish Sport Health quarterly and a member E-Newsletter monthly. After significant consultation with many stakeholders, over the last twelve months SMA has also embarked on a radical re-structure of the operations of the national office. This will see more national functions being delivered from state branches and is designed to give a more unified focus to the Federation. The restructure will be underpinned by the new member database which is finally coming on line, with members able to renew memberships on line and all Sports Trainer administration now performed from that database. As part of the re-structure we were also very pleased to appoint Nello Marino, former SMA Victoria Executive Officer as the new General Manager of SMA. This restructure was prefaced by the revamping of SMA s Vision, Mission, Values and logo to better reflect the situation of the Federation in the Twenty-first Century. These were summarised in a new tag line of Safety/Prevention/Advice which will appear in association with the logo and a new Vision: Sports Medicine Australia will build a vibrant community, including its members and other parties committed to sharing knowledge, training and information, to enhance the health of all Australians through facilitating their safe participation in sport and physical activity. SMA nationally has been served by dedicated national board members and invaluable business advisers: Ms Kerri Lee Sinclair (Marketing/PR), Ms Judy Barnesby (HR) and Mr Geoff Carter (Lawyer). Dr Warren Mundy, who moved to Scotland last year has returned and been reappointed as an adviser. The work of the national board members continues to be complemented by other members who serve on editorial boards, conference committees, policy review committees and as media spokespersons. Many just provide invaluable timely advice. We would like to thank them all for their support for the Federation in the last twelve months and also the staff of the national office (some of whom succumbed to the call of greener pastures in the last twelve months!)
