7 Philosophy Intermediate Waterlily Chignon Excerpt from the Curriculum Everybody seems to have a slightly different head shape. What all heads have in common are a series of points around it that mark the change in direction of the head s shape. This technique utilizes these points for guides for balancing a style, sectioning, teasing, pinning and decorating the hair with ornaments. Understanding these points of balance will have really positive effects on your speed and your accuracy immediately. There are vertical planes and horizontal planes as shown in the diagrams. Where the vertical lines intersect the horizontal lines is where we pin shapes, direct panels, place ornaments, balance the details of each finish, and use as guides to make each shape suit the face and profile. 8 Excerpt from the Curriculum Waterlily Chignon SECURINGTHEHAIR CREATINGTHETEXTURE CREATING THE CHIGNON Excerpt from the Curriculum Step 1 Draw all the hair straight back from face. Gather into a tail at the centre back at the round. Secure tail by an elastic with two small pins slid on. Insert one horizontally through tail and hold. Wrap elastic tightly around tail and cross first pin with a second pin to lock. Step 2 Divide the tail into 7 equalsized sections. Tie one knot at the base of each, clipping ends out of the way. CREATING THE CHIGNON Step 3 Hold the first section straight forward. Drape each knotted section upwards around the head to meet at the centre. Work side-to-side, gathering tails at the top. Fast and fabulous for any age, seven equal sections drawn from a pony-tail are knotted once at base, the ends gathered together, and then draped into a magical and versatile chignon. Step 4 Continue to gather and create knots. This is what will create the chignon form. Step 5 Gather 7 knotted tails at the centre top.

Step 8 Secure all tail ends together with another elastic band. DETAILING THE CHIGNON Step 9 Fold tail forward, pushing the bands and ends under. Ends offer support to the outer shape. Use a filler or hairpiece here for extra size. Step 10 Adjust shapes to your liking and cross pins through knots to lock in place. Step 11 Drape sections down with tail comb to widen shape.
