10 How a Resin Bonded Grinding Wheel Works Grinding wheels for portable power tools belong to the resin bonded family of bonded abrasives. Below is a brief description of the raw materials used in their manufacture, and an explanation of how the wheel actually works. ABRASIVE GRAINS The four main types of abrasive grains used in Resin Bonded Wheels are: Aluminum Oxide Silicon Carbide Zirconia Alumina Ceramic Tough, blocky, wedge shaped grain. Performs well on carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminum. Extremely hard and sharp, but fractures more easily than aluminum oxide. Performs well on cast iron, nonferrous metals (aluminum) and non-metallic materials including concrete, brick, marble and glass. Very tough, sharp and dense. Lends itself to higher temperatures and heavier pressures present in high-stock removal applications. Sharp mircocrystalline grain - cuts aggressively under light to moderate pressure. Its quick cutting capability makes it suitable for grinding stainless steel, titanium, and high-nickel alloys. DETERMINING GRIT SIZE Abrasive grains are sized by passing them over screens having a certain number of openings per linear inch. The number of openings per linear inch in the screen through which the particles just pass determines the grit size. Resin bonded wheels typically use relatively coarse grits such as 24 and 36. 46 Type 27 Flap Discs Flexovit Type 27 and Type 29 Flap Discs can grind, blend and finish in one step. Flap Discs can be used to advantage in Type 29 many applications that involve the use of depressed center grinding wheels and / or resin fiber discs by eliminating two step finishing and tool change time, thereby reducing total job cost. Grinding, Blending & Finishing DISC TYPES AND SPECIFICATIONS Type 29 Type 27 These convex discs are designed to be used at a 5-20 angle to the workpiece. This produces a small contact point between the work surface and the abrasive flaps. The narrow contact point is ideal for applications demanding faster stock removal like weld grinding. The Type 29 shape is also good for finishing contoured or irregular surfaces. These flat discs are typically used at a shallower angle of only 5-5. The flat shape, combined with the low angle, provides the operator with a much wider contact surface. This is best suited for finishing applications on broad surfaces. Zirconia Alumina - Removes material at a very fast rate and lasts longer than traditional aluminum oxide. It grinds extremely well on stainless steel as well as carbon steel. Resists loading on softer materials such as aluminum, brass, bronze and fiberglass. Aluminum Oxide - Performs well on mild and stainless steel. Since it grinds relatively cool, it is a good choice for finishing thin gauge metals which may be prone to bluing. Fiberglass Backing Plate - The industry standard. Their primary advantage is that the fiberglass backing will wear away along with the abrasive material, allowing the operator to make full use of the coated abrasive as the disc wears down. Since the backing plate is consumed it will not interfere with, or affect the work surface. Aluminum Backing Plate - Some operators prefer this rigid plate since it allows them to apply more pressure to the disc without flexing. 47 Flap Discs Type 27 Type 29 FLAP DISCS VS RESIN FIBER DISCS Much of the abrasive material of a Resin Fiber Disc is unusable, since the grinding takes place on the outer edge of the disc while the center area around the locking nut is often untouched. Once the exposed abrasive is dull the rate of stock removal drops and the disc must be replaced. Flap Discs are constructed with many layers of abrasive cloth. As the disc is used each layer wears away, exposing the layer below and fresh, sharp abrasive grain. This results in consistent stock removal rates, and allows for use of the entire disc. A single Flap Disc can perform the work of 5 to 20 Resin Fiber Discs. When replacing Resin Fiber Discs it is recommended that you select a Flap Disc one grit size coarser then the Resin Fiber Disc. 91 General Safety Guide for Bonded Abrasives Grinding Wheels Improperly Used Are Dangerous - Adhere to A.N.S.I. Standards The American National Standards Institute ( A.N.S.I. ) and the Occupational Safety & Health Administration ( O.S.H.A. ) have published standards concerning the proper use, handling, and storage of abrasive wheels. It is recommended that all personnel involved in the use, handling and purchasing of abrasive wheels become familiar with these standards. The following guidelines are based on material contained in A.N.S.I. B7-, Safety Requirements for the use, Care and Protection of Abrasive Wheels. HANDLING Handle all wheels carefully. Use suitable conveyance. Place wheels carefully. STORAGE Use proper racks, bins, drawers or boxes. Adequate support must be provided to protect wheels while awaiting use. Also allow removal of wheels without disturbing or damaging others and use on a rotational basis. (See A.N.S.I. B7- for example of storage rack.) MACHINE Always use a machine that is adequately guarded. Wheels can only be used on machines with safety guards that meet A.N.S.I. and O.S.H.A. specifications. Generally, a safety guard should enclose /2 of the wheel. Ensure that the tool has proper flanges. Generally, flanges should be one-third the diameter of the wheel or a minimum of one quarter. Flanges should be kept in good repair and must be checked periodically for flatness, burrs, or wear. Take proper care of equipment. Wheels can only be used on machines regularly maintained by qualified personnel including periodic checks of free running spindle speed. MOUNTING USE Visually inspect the wheels carefully for any evidence of damage in transit, handling, storage, or prior use. Perform a ring test to the wheel before mounting to detect concealed damage. To ring test a wheel, you tap it gently with a light, nonmetallic implement, such as the handle of a screwdriver for light wheels, or a wooden mallet for heavier wheels. A sound, undamaged wheel will give a clear tone. A cracked wheel will give you a dead sound. If a wheel gives a dead rather than a clear sound, it must not be used. Use wheels with the machine guards in place at all times. Secure the work piece. Always wear impact resistant eye protection, such as impact resistant safety goggles. Always wear protective clothing. Allow a newly mounted wheel to run for one minute. Wheels should be allowed to run for one full minute with all guards in place before dressing or grinding. Let the wheel do the work. Know what you are trying to accomplish. (i.e. particular quality of finish, heavy stock removal, blending, cleaning, etc.) DO NOT drop, bump, or roll. DO NOT lean wheels against equipment. DO NOT place tools or any parts on top of wheels FLEX (3539) flexovitabrasives.com DO NOT use trucks or conveyances, which do not provide firm support at all times when transporting wheels. DO NOT toss or throw wheels when placing on a shelf or rack, or in bins, boxes or drawers. DO NOT use a wheel that has been dropped or damaged. DO NOT expose wheels to water or other solvents. DO NOT expose wheels to high humidity or freezing temperatures. DO NOT remove the guard from the machine because wheel diameter is too large. This is an indication that the wheel is incorrect for that particular tool. Compare the rated speed for the wheel with the rated speed of the tool. The wheel s rated speed must be equal to or higher than the tool s. DO NOT mount a Type wheel with unequal sized flanges. DO NOT store the machine with the wheel mounted. DO NOT attempt to check spindle speed with a tachometer while the wheel is on the tool. DO NOT use a wheel that is in a damaged container without performing a ring test. Internal stress cracks could occur if a box has been dropped or slammed around during shipping. DO NOT mount a wheel with the power source engaged. DO NOT use wheels where the machine speed exceeds the maximum speed stated on the wheel. DO NOT tighten the mounting nut excessively. DO NOT grind on the side of a cutoff wheel. DO NOT grind completely flat with the wheel. Use proper grinding angle. DO NOT hold the grinder near your face when engaging the tool. Hold down and away.
