Be the Best For Your Students: Do the Best For You! National Board Certification Sharyn Gray, NBCT: Northeast Region Bianca Belmonte-Sapien, NBCT: Central Region New Mexico National Board Certified Teacher Network Charter Schools: Advancing the Promise!! 2015 Annual Conference
Teachers say: The National Board Certification process is the best professional development experience I ve ever had. National Boards Prezi
National Board Certification fosters quality teaching and student learning. The evidence is clear that National Board Certification distinguishes more effective teachers with respect to student achievement. Congressionally-mandated report National Research Council of the National Academies June 2008
National Board Incentives Advancement in 3 Tier Teacher Licensure ($10,000) Additional yearly stipend of 1.5 times the Unit Value (approximately $6,000 this year) Increased pension contribution Becoming an NBCT can have a dramatic effect on one s financial security.
What s changing in the process? Flexibility - While teachers can complete the entire certification process in one year once it is fully implemented, some may choose to do so over several years if that fits better with other demands on a teacher s time. Efficiency - While maintaining the same level of rigor, the process will be grouped into four components. Affordability - The total cost of certification will decrease to $1900, with each of the four components costing $475. Candidates will have the option to pay for and submit components separately.
The Certification Process The revised process for National Board Certification is comprised of 4 components: Component 1 Component 2 Component 3 Component 4 Content Knowledge Differentiation in Instruction Teaching Practice and Classroom Environment Effective and Reflective Practitioner 6
Component 1: Content Knowledge 3 Constructed Response Items These 3 short answer questions will be pulled from the original Assessment Multiple Choice questions This Component is available as of March 2015.
Component 2: Differentiation in Instruction Component 2 is a classroom-based portfolio entry. It requires candidates to gather and analyze information about individual students strengths and needs and use that information to design and implement instruction to advance student learning and achievement. Candidates submit a written commentary and student work. Evidence: Student work samples demonstrating growth over time. This Component is available as of March 2015.
Component 3: Teaching Practice & Learning Environment Component 3 is also a classroom-based portfolio entry. It requires video recordings of interactions between you and your students and two written commentaries in which you describe, analyze, and reflect on your teaching. Both videos and writing should demonstrate how you engage students and impact their learning. Evidence: Video recordings of teaching practice. This Component will be available as of November 2015.
