1 Master Teacher Program and Ohio Licensure Overview

2 Today s Goals 1. Teachers will understand Ohio s Four Tiered Licensure Structure. 2. Teachers will review the Master Teacher criteria. 3. Teachers will review the Master Teacher portfolio requirements.

3 Master Teacher Per Ohio Senate Bill 2 and House Bill 1, the Educator Standards Board was charged with the responsibility to define a Master Teacher and to adopt criteria to use in determining whether a person is a Master Teacher. Effective 2011, the Master Teacher program will become part of the new licensure structure.

4 Ohio s 4 Tiered Licensure Structure Resident Educator License 4 year nonrenewable Professional Educator License 5 year - renewable Senior Professional Educator License 5 year - renewable Lead Professional Educator License 5 year - renewable

5 Master Teacher Program Master Teacher is now considered one requirement for the pathway for an advanced level of licensure. National Board Certification is another pathway for an advanced level of licensure.

6 Senior Professional Educator License ( ) - At a Glance A + B + C A B C Degree Requirement Experience Demonstration of Practice at a blend of Accomplished/ Distinguished Level (OSTP): Master s degree or higher from an institution of higher education accredited by a regional accrediting organization Nine years under a standard teaching license with 120 days of service as defined by ORC, of which At least five years are under a professional/ permanent license/ certificate Successful completion of the Master Teacher Portfolio

10 What is a Master Teacher? A Master Teacher demonstrates excellence inside and outside of the classroom through consistent leadership and focused collaboration to maximize student learning. A Master Teacher strives for distinguished teaching and continued professional growth as specified by the Ohio Standards for the Teaching Profession.

11 Goals for Master Teacher Program Clearly define a process and scoring guide to ensure consistency across the state. Build a pool of designated teachers for leadership opportunities. Allow teachers to demonstrate their practice based on the Ohio Standards for the Teaching Profession.

12 To be designated as a Master Teacher in Ohio, eligible educators must clearly demonstrate each of the following criteria as described in the Ohio Standards for the Teaching Profession. 1. Consistent Leadership 2. Focused Collaboration 3. Distinguished Teaching Focus on Students and Environment 4. Distinguished Teaching - Focus on Content, Instruction and Assessment 5. Continued Professional Growth

13 To be eligible for the Master Teacher designation, educators must at least Hold a valid professional teaching license or certificate; Have taught a minimum of seven years (currently eighth year of teaching); Work a minimum of 120 days during the current school year; Work under a teaching contract/employed as a teacher.

14 Master Teacher Portfolio Submission Requirements Form C Master Teacher Application Form G 2 Ohio Master Teacher Candidate Recommendations Form H - Candidate s Checklist for Submission of Materials Maximum 12 pages written narrative Maximum 10 pages supporting evidence Follow Mahoning County MT Collaborative format for writing and assembling narrative and evidence

15 Format for Writing and Assembling the Narrative and Evidence The narrative must follow MLA guidelines: size 12 font, double-spaced, 1-inch margins. Please remove your name and other identifying information from all evidence. The portfolio must be organized in a binder with the MT Application (Form C) as the cover sheet. Please do not use plastic sleeves within the binder.

16 Format for Writing and Assembling the Narrative and Evidence Evidence must be samples from within the past five years. Number evidence so it can be easily referenced within the narrative. If one piece of evidence contains multiple pages, please clearly label with the same reference number. Examples cited in the narrative must be from within the past five years. All guidelines must be adhered to in order for the portfolio to be scored.

17 Candidate s Responsibility For Master Teacher designation, the processes and procedures outlined by the ODE must be followed and the specified forms used. 18 Master Teacher Timeline February 17, 2015 February 23, 2015 Master Teacher portfolios due to the local LPDC chairperson Master Teacher portfolios delivered to Jane Buckingham or Jennifer Walker at the MCESC March 14, 2015 Master Teacher scoring session April 1, 2015 Master Teacher scoring results returned to district LPDC chairperson

19 Master Teacher Designation Effective for five years Is transferrable Required for Senior Professional Educator or Lead Educator License Check with your district LPDC committee regarding contact hours for license renewal May reapply when designation expires MT designation must be renewed to maintain Senior Professional or Lead Professional licenses
