1 School of Business: Printing Guide Black and white laser printers are available for use in most computer labs across campus. As print quotas and restrictions are in place, it is important to familiarize yourself with SAIT's printing policies. Below is a summary list of these policies. Students are issued a 1,000 page black laser print quota per semester at no cost. This is represented by a dollar amount due to a cost difference between colour and black copy. Students are given a print quota for each term they are registered at SAIT. The print quota is based on the Program of study in which a student is enrolled. Some print limits have been adjusted based on identified student needs. The quota is calculated as $0.10 per black & white sheet. Colour printers are available in the Business Technology Centre on the 8th floor of the Burns building. Colour print deducts $1.00 per page from your print quota. The print quota has no cash value; is non-refundable; and cannot be carried over from one semester to another. Print quota is provided to be used to print course material for your class work. Additional print quota is available at the SAIT Bookstore in $10.00 increments. Unused purchased quota will be carried over to the next term. To give all students timely access to printing services, and to prevent accidental volume printing, print limits are 20 pages per print job. To periodically view your print quota, you may add a Print Balance icon to the Notification Area on the task bar. To do this, you must be connected to the SAIT network. Follow the instructions below: 1. Go to O:\Student\Common\Apps\PCounter and double-click on the WBALANCE.EXE file to install it. 2. Once this program is installed, you can double-click the icon in the Notification Area to see your remaining balance. Hovering over the icon will also display the balance.

2 Network Resources: Map a Printer To print in a selected computer lab or other permissible location, you must first map to the printer. Mapping is defined as pointing your laptop to a physical address on the network. This enables you to connect to a printer from any computer lab and print to any other computer lab on campus. Once you have mapped to a specific printer, it will remain on your laptop until you delete it. To map to a printer, used by School of Business students, follow the instructions below: 1. From the Start menu, type Run in the Search programs and files field. 2. Choose Run from the search results under Programs (It should appear at the top of the list) 3. The Run dialog box appears. In the Open field, input one of the following paths: Building & Classrooms Senator Burns Building Stan Grad Centre MB and MC classrooms NJ Burns building wing classrooms Crandall building G classrooms Stan Grad Centre MD classrooms Johnson-Cobb Energy Centre KA classrooms Aldred Centre CA, CB classrooms Path \\prn Click OK. 5. The specified Print Server window appears. 6. Scroll through the printer list; find the printer you want to map to; and then double-click on it. As each printer path is quite lengthy, concentrate on locating the room number in the path. An example is shown below. 7. The newly installed Printer window appears.

3 8. Close the Printer window. You may print to the newly installed printer from any application.

4 Network Resources: Printing Problems? If a Print command is issued and the print job does not print, try one of the troubleshooting tips below: Check that your print job does not exceed 20 printed pages. For print jobs over 20 pages, set the pages to print within the print dialog box for each block of 20 pages. Check your default printer before attempting to print again. Always select the printer prior to printing rather than using a quick print icon. This gives you the ability to select a specific printer. If the printer you want to use is not listed in the dialog box, you must map the printer before attempting to print again. Check the printer paper tray(s). Additional paper can be obtained from any Services Desk. Check the printer's status display (found on the top of the printer) to ensure it is online. If the display indicates an error message, notify your instructor or go to a Services Desk for assistance. Ensure that the printer's network cable is connected from the back of the printer to the network port. If it has disappeared, go to a Services Desk for assistance. If you experience technical difficulty while printing (i.e. paper jam or poor quality) you will receive a credit on your print quota account. Go to a Services Desk and provide the following information: Student Name & Student ID Number Department & Program Name of file printed & number of pages Date and time of print job (approximate) Location of the printer (room number) Tip... Print quota credits will not be issued for any accidental print jobs or duplicate jobs. Ensure you are printing to the correct printer and click the print button only once. Check for the print job before trying to print it again.

5 To cancel a print job, follow the instructions below: 1. Open the print queue by right-clicking the Printer icon in the Notification Area on the task bar. 2. Select Open Devices and Printers 3. Select the printer you sent the print job to from the list. 4. The Printer dialog box appears. A list of all print jobs waiting in the print queue displayed. 5. Right-click the document you want to stop printing and then click Cancel. Tip... You only have permission to cancel your own print job(s). To determine which print job(s) belong to you, look in the Owner column in the Printer dialog box.
