4 How we use escidoc - Imeji Reorganisation and migration using the example of the image database Imago_Mediathek (work in progress) Imago_Mediathek is the art historical image database of the Institute of Art and Visual History, maintained by the media library is proprietary software (MS-Access database) only usable on Windows2000 (client) and Sybase (server) as a single-user system is no longer maintained or developed and is not used on modern operating systems data pool contains ca picture files in ca data sets with ca. 50 metadata entries per record and the thesaurus (scientific tagging system / art historical classification) Reorganisation and migration (is under development) -> to a web-based open source software system (Fedora, escidoc, Imeji) for editing and publishing image data, including digital preservation of images and their metadata from MS-Access/Sybase -> via MySQL -> to XML/RDF -> import/ingest to escidoc - Imeji

9 How we use escidoc - Imeji Imago metadata and thesaurus in Imeji What kind of metadata are required for an arthistorical research database to describe, compare, and analyse artworks? The Imago database of the Institut of Art and Visual History and the media library uses a dual metadata model The 1st part contains the metadata of the facts and the basic information about the artwork, like the title of the work, the name of the artist, the creation date, the provenance, etc. The 2nd part is a thesaurus, a scientific tagging system of categorized keywords in a poly-hierarchical taxonomy structure to describe what is shown (art historical classification) Exemplary problems to solve for the metadata in Imago and the solution in Imeji Problem: in Imago, only single artists and one other contributor can be allocated to one artwork Solution: in Imeji, several artists or artist groups can be assigned (multiple selection) Problem: in Imago, there are unexact declarations of dates, like "around 1635" or "before 1720", but an interval search should be possible Solution: in Imeji, the two new date-fields "date_from" and "date_to" are created in order to define ranges for the unexact declarations - so "around 1635" then means "from 1625 to 1645"

11 How we plan to develop Imeji Implementation Imago-Thesaurus via escidoc service CoNE the thesaurus has a tree-shaped structure (poly-hierarchical taxonomy) the structure tree will be implemented into CoNE and linked with Imeji we will create a new data field in Imeji which enables the user to select keywords by mouse click for an associated search a selected keyword of the tree shows a set of objects tagged with the chosen keyword as well as all the objects that were tagged with the keyword which is located in the subtree of the selected keyword e.g. "Barock" shows all objects tagged with "Barock" and all objects tagged with "Hochbarock" which is located in the subtree of "Barock" the same keyword appears sometimes more than one time in the thesaurus but in a different context, e.g. "Lion" appears five times: context mammalian context astrological sign context symbol of the evangelist Marcus context symbol of Christ context animal-shaped ornament

15 What we do - Legacy Freie Universität Berlin Institute of Computer Science Supervisor: Prof. Dr. Raúl Rojas 1999: First Zuse project launched building of the initial version of the Konrad Zuse Internet Archive photocopies of documents as masters used a conventional scanner PDFs available to download titles, arranged thematically and chronologically some transcripts only a few documents of Zuse's inheritance outstanding achievements at that time (12 years ago) established as one of the leading sources about Zuse
