4 1. c-treeace Performance Monitor c-treeace Performance Monitor is designed to provide performance graphs showing c-treeace data throughput activity. With the Instances menu you can create multiple instances of the c-treeace Performance Monitor tool for actively monitoring a large quantity of metrics. All Rights Reserved 4

5 Startup 2. Startup The following connection window appears each time an instance of this utility is started. Figure 1: Connection Dialog Server Connection Server Name/Port Number - Using this combo box you can select if you are going to specify the c-treeace Server Name or its TCP/IP port number in the underlying text box. This example shows the Server Name "FAIRCOMS". Machine Name/IP Address - Use this text box to specify the IP address or the machine name where the c-treeace Server is running. If your c-treeace Server is running on your local machine, using the "localhost" machine name will provide better performance. User Options User Name - Specify the user name you want to use to make the connection to the c-treeace Server. Password - Use this text box to enter the user's password. Note the default "User Name" and "User Password" are both "ADMIN" and the Password is case sensitive. When you're done press OK to establish the connection. If you press Cancel the tool will not be connected to the c-treeace Server. All Rights Reserved 5

6 Using Main Window 3. Using Main Window Once you are connected to a c-treeace Server you can add graphs to the monitor window by checking the metrics of interest in the metric pane on the left. The metrics are sorted into groups with each group receiving it's own tab across the monitor window as displayed below. Also note the scroll bar for the metric topics across the top of the Monitor graph window and the scroll bar along the right side of the graph window. Read / Write - This group provides metrics for analyzing Read and Write operations to the c-treeace files and communication buffers. Locks - This group provides metrics for analyzing the c-treeace lock subsystem. Recall for performance reasons and consistent operation across platforms, c-treeace maintains its own internal lock tables and does not rely on the operating system lock facilities. Miscellaneous - This group provides metrics for monitoring the current number of logical and physical files opened, the number of file control blocks, the number of users and the internal maximum allowable setting for each metric. Logs - This group provides metrics for analyzing the c-treeace log subsystem including the number of log write and read operations, the amount of data written and read, and the number and amount of log file extensions that have occurred. Data / Index - This group provides metrics for analyzing the c-treeace data and index cache facility. All Rights Reserved 6

7 Using Main Window Transactions - This group provides metrics for analyzing the c-treeace transaction processing subsystem including the number of transaction begins, ends, aborts, save points, restore points, log flushes and check points. Sync / Flush - This group provides metrics for analyzing file system calls including c-treeace data file and transaction log sync and flush calls. Isam Operations - This group provides metrics for analyzing c-treeace ISAM operations including adds, updates, reads and deletes. Memory - This group provides metrics for monitoring the current and maximum c-treeace memory usage. All Rights Reserved 7

8 Menus 4. Menus c-treeace Performance Monitor menu options are as follows: Instances Menu - Use this menu to create and close c-treeace Performance Monitor instances. New PerfMon - Opens a new c-treeace Performance Monitor Instance. Exit - Closes all the c-treeace Performance Monitor instances and disconnects from the c-treeace Engine. Note the Exit option on the File Menu below closes only the current instance. Windows Menu - Use this menu to manage open c-treeace Performance Monitor instances. Cascade - Cascade all the active c-treeace Performance Monitor instances. Tile Horizontal - Tile all the active c-treeace Performance Monitor instances horizontally. Tile Vertical - Tile all the active c-treeace Performance Monitor instances vertically. FAIRCOMS@ Use the dynamic items on the bottom of this menu to view and select the active instance windows. Help Menu - Use this menu to access the c-treeace Performance Monitor help information. Help Contents - Display the c-treeace Performance Monitor help file. Help Index - Display the c-treeace Performance Monitor help index. Help Search - Display the c-treeace Performance Monitor help search window. All Rights Reserved 8

9 Menus About - Provide information about the version of the c-treeace Performance Monitor executable. File Menu - Use this menu to save and load c-treeace Performance Monitor preset and graphic schemes. Open - Use this command to load presets and selected graphs from previously saved.xml preset files. Save - Save your preset changes and selected graphs to the active.xml file on disk for future loading. Save As- Saves the currently selected graphs settings to a.xml preset file on disk. Exit - Closes only the current instance. Option Menu - Use this menu to setup and control the c-treeace Performance Monitor window panes. Remove All Charts - Select this option to remove all of the charts (e.g., graphs) from the active c-treeace Performance Monitor instance. Show Left Tree - Select this option (or press F3) to show or hide the metric tree that appears in the left most window pane. Show Options - Select this option (or press F4) to show or hide the Configuration Options row that appears directly below the icons. Pause Graphics - Select this option (or press F6) to pause the graphics. This is a global setting that will pause all graphics for the current instance. Record Menu - Use this menu to record and playback c-treeace Performance Monitor instances. All Rights Reserved 9

10 Menus Select File - Use this option to define an.xml file on disk to use during record for storing the current graph activity displayed on the screen. Note, all selected graph activity, whether visible on the screen or not, will be recorded. Also use this option to load an.xml file for playback. Start - Use this option to begin recording. A file dialog window appears before recording actually starts if an.xml file has not already been specified using the "Select File" option. Once recording starts, the "Record" menu changes to red so you know an active record session is in progress. Once recording starts, you may not add additional graphs. To stop recording, press the record button again at which time all information will be saved to the file specified at the beginning of the record session. Playback - Use this option to playback the currently loaded.xml file opened using the "Select File" option. Right Click Menu - Access this menu by right clicking on any active graph. The controls available within this menu act on the active graph only. Counter - This value indicates the name of the current graph these menu options will affect. Scale Up - Use this option to increase the graph "Total" scale value. Scale Down - Use this option to decrease the graph "Total" scale value. Default Scaling - Use this option to return to the default "Total" graph scale value. Scale / Sec. Up - Use this option to increase the "Per Second" graph scale value. Scale / Sec. Down - Use this option to decrease the "Per Second" graph scale value. Default / Sec. Scaling - Use this option to return to the default "Per Second" graph scale value. Grid - Use this option to turn on (or off) the total quantity (typically blue) grid lines on the active graph. Grid / Sec - Use this option to turn on (or off) the per second (typically red) grid lines on the active graph. View Chart Values - Use this option to produce a table of the graph points making up the graph plot. This option is useful for obtaining very precise values. All Rights Reserved 10

11 Icon Row View Playback Values - Same as the "View Chart Values" except for use during an active playback session. Remove Chart - Use this option to remove the highlighted graph. Recall the "Remove All Charts" option under the Option menu. 5. Icon Row Preset Area Use this icon to Open a preset configuration file from disk. Use this icon to Save the presets to disk including the graphs selected, graph color and layout, etc. Charts Area Use this icon to Pause a graph (and restart movement once paused). Note F6 performs the same operation as noted in the Option Menu). Use this icon to Remove a graph. Display Area Use this icon to Remove the Tree Pane on the left. Note F3 performs the same operation as noted in the Option Menu. Use this icon to Remove the Options Pane immediately below this Icon row. Note F4 performs the same operation as noted in the Option Menu. Record Area Use this icon to Open a graph record session for playback. Use this icon to Record a graph session to disk. Configuration Options The c-treeace Performance Monitor configuration controls in the following pane are as follows: Chart Options (Global) Rows - Select the number of graph rows you want displayed on the chart window. Note this change is dynamic so you can quickly determine at what point the charts become too small to be useful. Note increasing the overall window dimensions will provide more room for the charts. Columns - Select the number of graph columns you want displayed on the chart window. Note this change is dynamic so you can quickly determine at what point the charts become too small to be useful. Note increasing the overall window dimensions will provide more room for the charts. Update Frequency - Use this list box to select how often (measured in seconds) to plot points on the graphs. Note this is a global setting and will pertain to all graphs. Chart "Total" Options (Per Graph) Grid - checking this box will display the grid lines between the axes for the currently highlighted graph. Scale - Use this combo box to set the graph scale for the "Total" line for the currently highlighted graph. Hide - Checking this box will hide the "Total" labels on the chart axes for the currently highlighted graph. Color - is the color of the "Total" graph line and axes labels for the currently highlighted graph. Chart Background Chart Background - is the color of the graph background for the currently highlighted graph. Chart "Per Sec." Options Grid - checking this box will display the grid lines between the axes for the currently highlighted graph. Scale - Use this combo box to set the graph scale for the "Per Second" line for the currently highlighted graph. Hide - Checking this box will hide the "Per Second" labels on the chart axes for the currently highlighted graph.
