EAMS for Future Grids Presenter: Nguyen Khanh-Loc Senior Consultant DNV GL Clean Technology Centre Singapore 1 SAFER, SMARTER, GREENER
Objectives What is EAMS? Why EAMS? How EAMS helps? 2
DNV GL - Organized to maximise value for our customers MARITIME OIL & GAS ENERGY BUSINESS ASSURANCE SOFTWARE RESEARCH & INNOVATION 150 years of operation 300+ offices 100 countries 16,500 Employees Energy : 2,500 3
What is EAMS? (EAMS: Energy Asset Management System) 4
EMS & AMS play key roles in managing the system and assets Conventionally, EMS & AMS exist separately in the power system AMS (Asset Management System) Monitor conditions of assets (E.g. Transformers, etc.) Reduce operational costs Control the risk of failure EMS (Energy Management Systems) Improve energy efficiency globally (E.g. frequency, voltage quality, loading percentage, power losses, etc.) 5
EAMS is the integration of EMS and AMS Grid operator EAMS TP, SE, CA, PF, UC, AGC, Asset Health & Risk Management Replacement, Maintenance procedure DMS DB SCADA Operation & Control Middleware Services Work orders Assets Field Engineer 6
Why EAMS? - Disadvantages of two separated EMS & AMS systems - High penetration of DERs coming soon 7
Communication breakdown Challenges caused by two separated systems EMS (Energy Management Systems) AMS (Asset Management System) Topology processing Health Index (E.g. remaining life time, failure rate, failure probability, etc.) State Estimation Risk Index (E.g. impact of failure, risk matrix, etc.) Contingency analysis Power Flow Cost Analysis (E.g. price control, optimal replacement time, forecasting, etc.) 8
DER penetration is increasing rapidly DERs account for 100% of global capacity additions Less than 10% DERs 36% DERs 56% RE DERs Age Central Power Period Rise of DERs RE RE 22% Fossil Fuel & Nuclear 78% Bio-power 8% Wind 13% Solar PV 3% Hydropow er 74% CSP & Ocean 2% In 2013, first time PV added capacity is larger than wind capacity World total generation World RE generation Source: REN21, NREL, GE 9
Especially PV & Wind Globe: PV has been fastest deployed in past few years, 139GW by 2013, 55% annually Germany: Deployed largest capacity of PV in the world (33GW by 2013) Has high penetration level 45% (World total installed PV capacity) (PV penetration level) Source: PV Grid, Bundesnetzagentur 10
The high DER penetration causes many challenges Challenges: Reversed power flow in distribution system & additional power flow in transmission system Grid congestion Operation, control, and protection More uncertainties High risk Benefits: Defer capacity upgrades with proper planning Improve power system resiliency Reduced energy losses Provide distribution voltage support and ridethrough, improve voltage quality Reduce environmental impact EAMS effectively deal with the complexities caused by high penetration level of DERs 11
How EAMS Help? 12
EAMS Core Functions Common Database Network model & asset parameters Asset technical status (E.g. condition data, utilization data, criticality, etc.) EAMS Operation and Control Topology processing State Estimation Contingency analysis Power Flow Health Index (E.g. remaining life time, failure rate, failure probability, etc.) Risk Index (E.g. impact of failure, risk matrix, etc.) Cost Analysis (E.g. price control, optimal replacement time, forecasting, etc.) Decision Making (E.g. Urgency Priority Maintenance need Refurbishment Replacement need) 13
Standard for AM - ISO Organizational Plans and organizational objectives Asset Management Policy Strategic asset management plan (SAMP) Asset management objectives Asset Management Plans Plans for developing asset management system + relevant support Implementation of asset management plans Asset portfolio Asset Management system + relevant support elements Performance evaluation and improvements (ISO Relationship between key elements of an asset management system) 14
Maintenance Strategy Evolution Run to Fail Time Based Condition Based Risk & Criticality Based Repair/replace on fail Maintain at a set interval Replace at 40 year asset life Maintain & replace based on condition Maintain or replace assets with highest risk and greatest importance Use of data and automation to move effort from low value to high value results in spending optimization and reduced risk Most utilities are in this range 15
Impact Example: Cascade DNV GL s Asset Management Software Platform Asset Analytics Decision Support 5,00 4,00 3,00 Risk Matrix Reliability , , ,00 0,00 1,00 2,00 3,00 4,00 5,00 Probability Cascade/CARE AHRM Analysis Collect and Consolidate Data Failure Reporting Visual Inspections Diagnostics Cascade FieldUnit & 3rd party Modules SCADA/EMS AHRM : Asset Health Risk Model CARE : Cascade Algorithm & Rules Engine 16
COST RISK HEALTH Expert Knowledge Transfer Functions Folding Function DECISION TAKING Urgency, priority Maintenance, refurbishment, cost control Example: AHRM Advanced Asset Health and Risk Model INPUTS CORE FUNCTIONS OUTPUTS/Reporting ORG Statistical data Statistical function Health Index Condition data Utilization data Design parameters Condition functions Utilization functions Maintenance functions Condition index Remaining life time Maintenance time Failure rate Failure probability Business Values KPI s Impact & Risk Functions Risk Index Failure Impact Failure cost Maintenance costs Replacement costs Operation costs Cost functions Replacement wave & costs Optimal replacement time 17
EAMS add values to utilities M E S M E A S EAMS Additional Value: More intensively coordinated Accuracy Better big-data Effectiveness Simple configuration Facilitate management process A Cost saving M S 18
Technical Advantages Advantage EMS functions AMS functions More accurate Higher performance Full screen for high risk contingencies & high failure probability contingencies do not miss out critical contingencies Fewer contingencies (e.g. filter out low failure probability) Making use of more accurate component s criticality & utilization information (e.g. loading condition) Better incorporate the EMS functions into AMS algorithm Better big-data management One single database, more effectively coordinated More effective Avoid redundancy of assessments and processes More optimal Decisions are made based on a more comprehensive assessment considering both global and local aspects 19
Benefits of EAMS Technical Financial Organizational More accurate assessment results Higher performance More effective More optimal Better big-data management Reduce manpower cost Reduce operation cost: cost of failure Optimizing maintenance & replacement cost Simplify management process Improving organization s KPIs Improving reputation obtain other business values More consistent management process 20
Conclusion EAMS is the choice for future grid DNVGL Service & Solution Electricity transmission and distribution Energy management and operations services Energy efficiency services Software Power testing, inspections and certification Asset Management maintenance strategy review and optimization ISO based Asset Management system consulting CASCADE: 20+ year software for Asset Management, to 100+ power utilities AHRM: Asset Hearth & Risk assessment, cost analysis and decision support 21
