1 Department of Special Education NIMH - Secunderabad 1.0 HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT 1.1 Long Term courses offered M.Phil. Special Education (MR) Based on the recent trends in the philosophy of education of persons with mental retardation, research in the field is warranted and to undertake such activities qualified professionals are required. M.Phil Special Education (Mental Retardation) programme prepares candidates to take up research and training for creation of highly qualified Special Educators in the field of mental retardation. This is a one year course affiliated to Osmania University, Hyderabad. M.Ed. Special Education (Mental Retardation) M.Ed. Special Education (Mental Retardation) course of one year duration affiliated to Osmania University, Hyderabad is aimed at developing professionals at faculty level in special B.Ed in Special Education (Mental Retardation) Keeping in view the need for special teachers at various levels, NIMH conducts one year B.Ed in Special Education (Mental Retardation) affiliated to Osmania University. Diploma in Early Childhood Special Education (Mental Retardation) Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE) focuses on children below 6 years of age and has various modes and approaches in imparting training based on the ability of the target group. This could be a home - based training, centre - based training, placement in regular pre-schools, anganwadis and balwadis. The early childhood special educator is also expected to work as a member in a multi-disciplinary team for designing and managing the curriculum, to enhance inclusion of the disabled children in regular schools.

Special Education (Mental Retardation) This is two year diploma course formerly known as Diploma in Special Education (MR) aimed at preparing special teachers, who are competent in screening, assessment, education and training of children with mental retardation and associated disabilities. 3 1.2 Short Term courses: About 6-8 short term courses are conducted at NIMH during every academic year to up date the knowledge and skills of special teachers and parents and family members. In addition training programmes are also conducted to train the regular teachers on management of children with learning problems and children with special needs in regular schools. The no of professionals attending the training programmes during the academic year ranges from 180 to RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT The department has undertaken Research and Development activities which are of developmental and applied in nature as per the need of the hour. The projects undertaken were primarily on creating awareness on mental retardation, development of curriculum based assessment tools for the purposes of education of children with different categories, teaching learning material for the acquisition of various skills, and the service delivery models specifically for children with autism and multiple disabilities. Initiated integrated education services in regular schools by facilitating to establish resource room facility. In addition training programmes to regular schools were organized on management of children with special needs.
10 5.0 AWARDS RECEIVED: Dr. Vijaylakshmi Myreddi, the faculty from the department was assigned to be a nodal officer to Madurai during the year She has received the National award for outstanding performance as The Nodal Officer for Best District Disability Rehabilitation Center for the year 2004 from The President, Shri Dr.A.P.J. Abdul Kalam on December 3 rd 2004.
