Duke University s professional master s programs in environmental management and forestry at our world-renowned Nicholas School of the Environment combine rigorous classroom academics with an emphasis on practical, skillsbased instruction in environmental management, science and policy. No other university takes such a broad approach to preparing our students to address the outstanding environmental issues facing society today. Professional Master of Environmental Management (MEM) Located in the heart of the beautiful Duke University campus in Durham, North Carolina, the Nicholas School provides a comprehensive, multidisciplinary program focused on the relationship between the environment and society to prepare scientists, managers and policymakers to promote the sustainable use of Earth s resources. The Nicholas School s program is enhanced by strong collaborations with Duke s eight other graduate and professional schools as well as a variety of interdisciplinary institutes and centers. As a Nic student, all of these resources are available to you. Professional Master of Forestry (MF) You will graduate with the knowledge to understand the complexities of today s environmental challenges; the practical skills to devise and implement effective solutions; the ability to think critically across disciplines; and the flexibility to work in teams or individually everything you need to lead, whatever career path you choose. World-Class Education by World-Renowned Faculty Nicholas School faculty members are recognized for their expertise on a wide range of environmental issues, from climate change and endangered species, to environmental health effects and water quality.

Master of Environmental Management (MEM) Trains you to understand the scientific bases of environmental problems, as well as the social, political and economic factors that determine effective policy solutions Concentrations in Coastal Environmental Management Ecosystem Science & Conservation Ecotoxicology & Environmental Health Energy & Environment Environmental Economics & Policy Global Environmental Change Water Resources Management Master of Forestry (MF) Develops your expertise in sustainable management of forested ecosystems, with depth in biology, physical sciences, silviculture, forest measurement and resource policy, economics and administration Concentration in Forest Resource Management degree details Core degree programs require a two-year, full-time commitment. 48 units of credit prepare you for an environmental career in a wide variety of settings, including public, private and nonprofit sectors. All concentrations include required courses in professional communication, a master s project seminar and a master s project of four to six credits. Prerequisites Entering students must have earned the equivalent of a four-year bachelor s degree from an accredited college or university or completed at least three years of study in an institution participating in the Cooperative College Program (see Programs page). While students from all backgrounds and interests are invited to apply, all students admitted to the School are expected to have: some previous training in the natural sciences or the social sciences related to your area of interest; at least one college semester of calculus; and a college statistics course (B- minimum). MEM Concentrations Coastal Environmental Management: Provides a background in ocean science, coastal ecosystems and policy, and prepares scientifically informed professionals to fill coastal policy and management, research or advocacy positions. (in Durham and at the Duke Marine Lab) Ecosystem Science and Conservation: Focuses on natural science, policy and management issues related to stewardship of natural resources. Students concentrate on a particular ecosystem or level of conservation analysis, supplemented with methodology training. Ecotoxicology and Environmental Health: Emphasizes interactions among human and environmental health and ecological processes. Focuses on the fate, effects and risks of pollutants to natural ecosystems and human populations. Energy and Environment: Provides skills and knowledge necessary to effectively address energy and environmental challenges within a variety of sectors, including corporations, government and regulatory agencies, and nonprofit or advocacy organizations. Environmental Economics and Policy: Emphasizes methods to analyze national/international environmental and natural resource policy and examine potential public and private impacts of new policy under consideration. Highly analytical. Global Environmental Change: Combines environmental science, analytical skills, and management and policy training to prepare students to analyze environmental changes and to anticipate and respond to management and policy issues that arise from these changes. Water Resources Management: Focuses on basic physical, chemical and biological processes affecting aquatic environments, and application to management and protection of water resources. MF Concentration Forest Resource Management: Integrates basic forest ecology with foundations in planning and administration for the sustainable production of forest resources. Focus is problem-solving in complex ecologic and management systems to maximize forest benefits.

In general, each school reduces by one semester the number of credits required to earn the degree. Students must earn admission to both schools. MEM+MF within the Nicholas School (2 1 / 2-3 years) MEM+MBA or MF+MBA with the Fuqua School of Business (3 years) or with the kenanflagler school of business at the university of north carolina in chapel hill (3 years) MEM+JD or MF+JD with the Duke School of Law (4 years) or with the university of north carolina law school (4 years) MEM+MPP or MF+MPP with the Sanford School of Public Policy (3 years) MEM+MEMP (Master of engineering management) with the Pratt School of Engineering (2-3 years) MEM+MAT (Master of Arts in Teaching) with the Graduate School (3 years) With special permission, you can also arrange concurrent degree programs with certified graduate degree programs within, or outside of, Duke University. 7 for exceptional undergraduates. The Cooperative College (3/2) Program allows qualified undergraduates to proceed directly from three years at one of our cooperating institutions to the MEM or MF. Application is made during the third year of undergraduate study; 3/2 applicants are evaluated along with the other applicants to the MEM (or MF) program. If admitted, you will earn the bachelor s degree after the first year of MEM or MF study and the professional degree at the end of the second year. At least one semester in residence is required, in which you can earn up to 15 units of credit; the remaining units can be earned through the Nicholas School s continuing education intensive courses, independent study and the required Master s Project. Application fee Application Deadline for the Academic Year: January 15, 2014 Tuition, Fees and Financial Aid The Nicholas School admits students without regard to your ability to pay and, within limited resources, makes every effort to provide as much support as possible. Financial aid in the form of partial merit scholarships, assistantships and loans is available for graduate professional degree students. The Nicholas School is unable to offer tuition waivers or stipends to professional degree students. The Office of Academic and Enrollment Services works closely with each student to identify additional sources of financial support, including federal loan programs, fellowships and other resources.
