WVU lost to LSU last year and at Missouri two years ago. WVU was 1-1 in the Big East/SEC Challenge. WVU defeated Auburn in Birmingham (2007) and lost at Miss. St. (2011). Florida assistant Darris Nichols played in 141 games at WVU from , playing for Bob Huggins in He scored 993 points and still holds the NCAA record for most games played without fouling out (141). Academic Success Thirty of the last 31 seniors on the WVU men s basketball team have graduated on time or early since This year, Devin Williams is a nominee for the Allstate NABC Good Works Team. Williams made 11 of his 15 field goal attempts and added nine rebounds for the 20th-ranked Mountaineers, now 7-0 to begin the year for the second straight season. Sophomore guard Daxter Miles Jr. contributed 18 points and senior forward Jonathan Holton nearly missed a double-double with 17 points and nine rebounds. We just didn t have a lot of interest in the game today, I don t think, said West Virginia coach Bob Huggins, continuing his climb up the NCAA all-time wins chart with career victory No. 772, although it s a safe bet he will struggle to remember the game when his career is finished. West Virginia shot 52.3 percent from the floor, or 0.6 percent better than it did from the free throw line (15 of 29). When you come in and you shoot 50 percent from the free throw line you re not ready to play, and we were not ready to play, said Huggins. When you miss layups we missed four or five, you re not ready to play. When you have unforced turnovers that s just a lack of concentration. Fortunately for West Virginia, the outmanned Owls were outmanned, turning the ball over 31 times leading to 31 Mountaineer points. The game did represent the season debut for junior forward Brandon Watkins, who missed the first six games of the year while recovering from off-season knee surgery. Watkins played 17 minutes and scored six points, grabbed six rebounds, blocked a shot and handed out an assist to draw praise from his coach. He gives us a presence around the rim, and I liked the way he played today, said Huggins of Watkins initial performance of the season. Kennesaw State, which has lost games this year at Alabama and LSU, drops to 2-8. Kendrick Ray led the Owls with 23 points. A Family Day crowd of 8,731 watched the game. West Virginia did not trail in the Kennesaw State game. WVU has not trailed in five of its seven games to open the season. Kennesaw State and WVU met for the first time in school history. No. 10 Virginia used a suffocating second-half defensive performance to defeat 14th-ranked West Virginia, 70-54, in the first game of the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden. The second half was a complete reversal for the 8-1 Cavaliers, who turned the ball over a season-high 19 times and trailed by as many as 12 points through the first 16 minutes of play. But the Cavs were able to cut their deficit in half by halftime, 36-30, and then totally took West Virginia out of anything it tried to do offensively in the second half. The Mountaineers (7-1) made just six second-half baskets, WVU s bigs consistently had trouble handling double teams along the baseline, the guards couldn t knock down shots when they did get open and the Cavaliers finally capitalized offensively on their end of the floor. The result was a 28-point swing and a valuable learning experience for the young Mountaineers. Virginia shot a sizzling 74 percent in the second half (14 of 19). We didn t guard and when you get spread the way they are going to spread you, you ve got to guard the ball, West Virginia coach Bob Huggins said. We did just a horrific job of guarding the ball. Forward Anthony Gill led Virginia with 20 points on 9 of 11 shooting many of those coming around the basket on stick-backs and dunks, Malcolm Brogdon contributed 14 and London Perrantes returned to the court after missing the last two games while recovering from an appendectomy to add 13. The critical moment in the game happened with 13:11 left and West Virginia leading by one, Guard Jevon Carter made a steal and had a direct path to the basket for a layup, but he chose instead to make a risky behind-the-back pass that Perrantes ended up with and turned into a 3-point basket at the other end. It was a five-point swing that Virginia turned into a seven-point swing and a four-point lead when Gill followed up Perrante s triple with a dunk. From there, Virginia s half-court defense took over. K-State turned the tables on the Mountaineers in the first half, forcing WVU into 10 turnovers while committing just five. Despite nine different players on the score sheet in the opening half, Devin Williams, Jevon Carter, Daxter Miles Jr. and Jaysean Paige combined for just nine points and the Mountaineers were 0-for-8 from beyond the arc. West Virginia headed into the locker room trailing Paige came out in the second half and took over, giving the Mountaineers a lead with 1:07 remaining in the contest on a tip-in and free throw. The poor shooting also carried over to the free throw line where West Virginia missed 13 and Kansas State failed to convert on nine of its 23 attempts. West Virginia (17-3, 6-2) was sleep walking through the first half until being whistled for back-to-back technical fouls, one going against guard Tarik Phillip after he made a driving layup and another on West Virginia s bench for protesting the call. Kansas State was only able to make one of four free throws to take an 8-7 lead, but the two technicals finally stirred up a lethargic WVU student section. Over the next seven minutes West Virginia built its lead to nine, 19-10, getting baskets from Jaysean Paige, Devin Williams, Holton, a three from Paige and another close one from Holton. K-State eventually whittled West Virginia s lead to three, 21-18, on a pair of Justin Edwards free throws, but the Mountaineers used a 13-7 run over the remaining 4:48 to take a advantage into the locker room at halftime. WVU pushed the lead to double digits in the second half, getting to as high as 17, 57-40, with 5:51 to go. Jaysean Paige came off the bench to score 12, while Nathan Adrian, getting his first start of the year in place of freshman Esa Ahmad, scored 10 points on four of five shooting. Ahmad sat out the game with a sprained right knee. In getting his sixth double-double of the season, Holton made six of eight from the floor and also pulled down seven defensive rebounds. Kansas State (12-8, 2-6) got 11 points from Edwards. An announced crowd of 9,936 watched the game. West Virginia swept the season series against Kansas State for the second year in a row. The Mountaineers have won the last five meetings against the Wildcats.
