1 Using the Business Intelligence Portal to Prepare College Developmental Education Accountability Reports Research & Analytics Academic & Student Affairs The Florida College System September 22, 2015
2 Session Roadmap Develop additional skills to complete the Developmental Education Accountability Report. Access the Business Intelligence portal. Acquire foundational portal navigational skills. Access data for Accountability Report Table I. Access data for Accountability Report Table II. Provide portal exposure, build capacity, and generate interest in site content to support college continuous program improvement initiatives.

4 Developmental Education Accountability Report Statutorily Required (5 b) Beginning October 31, 2015, each Florida College System institution shall annually prepare an accountability report that includes student success data relating to each developmental education strategy implemented by the institution. The report shall be submitted to the Division of Florida Colleges by October 31 in a format determined by the Chancellor of the Florida College System. By December 31, the Chancellor shall compile and submit the institutional reports to the Governor, the President of the Senate, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the State Board of Education. _Statute&URL= /1008/1008.html

6 Business Intelligence -Make a Favorite Open a new Internet Explorer browser session. Paste into the upper-left dialog box. Left single mouse click on the Star to access your Favorites list. The list of your Favorite websites will pop up.
7 Business Intelligence -Make a Favorite The Add a Favorite dialog box will pop up. Hit the Delete button on your keyboard to rename the website. Type in FCS Business Intelligence Portal as the new name. Left mouse click on the Add button within the Add a Favorite dialog box. To verify that you added the site to your favorites, left single mouse click on the Star from the upper right menu. The new site will be at the bottom of your Favorites List.

10 Accountability Report Tab Navigation Top left menu -- Left single mouse click State or arrow key down or press and hold the left mouse button on right slider to find your college. Left single mouse click on your college. Then left single mouse click on the year ( ). Blue Print -- bread crumbs provide view (State or specific College), year, and details about what data are currently being displayed. Subject Math, Reading & Writing. Strategy Co-requisite, Compression, Contextualized, & Modularized.
11 Developmental Ed Strategies MODULARIZED instruction is an acceleration strategy targeting specific skill gaps where particular deficiencies are identified and focused interventions are implemented to remediate them. Material is deconstructed\chunked into sub-unit parts and condensed into component pieces that address precise skill area deficiencies. COMPRESSION provides more intensive course content delivery through increased time on task within a shortened timeframe (e.g., 16 hours per week for 3 weeks rather than 3 hours per week for 16 weeks). Instruction is redesigned and concentrated to reduce the amount of time students spend in developmental education. A distinguishing characteristic is that the intensity is increased and the duration of the instructional interaction is reduced to allow the student to progress at a faster pace.
12 Developmental Ed Strategies CONTEXTUALIZED developmental instruction is organized around real world applied problem solving activities built on the student s interests and goals. Meta majors may play a role. Contextualized instruction is characterized by the sustained systematic use of a single theme related to the student s academic and\or life goals. CO-REQUISITE course based developmental instruction or tutoring supplements credit instruction while a student is concurrently enrolled in a credit-bearing entry level gateway Math or English (Writing or Reading) course. The co-requisite approach uses a companion course or instructional activity to provide extra support. Co-requisite activities provide extra time on task to assist in the mastery of course materials.
13 Accountability Report Tab Navigation + Plus or Minus sign expands or contracts categorical strategy breakouts. Down Arrow allows user to add categories to the table such as further demographic breakdowns. The arrow expands or contracts these categorical breakouts. Down Arrow opens up Drag and Drop functionality. Using the bottom far left menu, select a characteristic you want to add to the table and press and hold the left mouse button. With the left mouse button still depressed, move your mouse cursor across the screen to Drag and Drop the characteristic into the upper left of the table shell between the light blue lines that appear when this function is enabled.
14 Exporting Results to Excel Right single mouse click on table to access pop-up menu to export. Left single mouse click on Export Table. Left single mouse click on the older version of Excel (.xls).
15 Exporting Results to Excel Left single mouse click on Save As to keep a copy of the table you produced. Place files in a directory to access them in the future and designate a meaningful file name such as State Dev Ed Overall.xls. Left single mouse click on Open to view the results you have stored under the file name State Dev Ed Overall.xls.
16 Rotating Tables Right single mouse click on table to access pop-up menu to rotate the table. Left single mouse click on Rotate Table. The table columns will become rows. This is useful when you are reviewing a sizable amount of data. When exporting a table to Excel use the original table orientation.

19 Part II Developmental Education Accountability Report Questions Question 1- Comprehensive Advising Plan. As a result of Senate Bill 1720, describe the CHANGES your college made to advising. Increased and retooled advisor training. Hired or reassigned staff to increase the number of advisors. Implemented or enhanced advisement software. Implemented targeted transcript evaluations. Revised topical advisement checklists. Created Individual Education Plans for more students. Degree pathways and maps used during advising. Intrusive advising techniques used. Implemented or enhanced early warning systems. Learning styles or outside commitments factored into advisement. Used predictive models based on multiple factors. Source:
20 Part II Developmental Education Accountability Report Questions Question 2- Documented Student Achievement. Describe the measures\approaches your college implemented to help students make informed enrollment\placement decisions. Implemented multi-factor predictive models to inform advising. HS background: grades; grade point average, transcripts, courses, grades in specific courses, and student self-reported success. Assessment scores (PERT, SAT, ACT, FCAT, FSA, etc.). Dual enrollment & other accelerated college credit (IB, AP). High school class rank. Career interests or inventories. Family and work commitments. Time-lapsed since previous education or last math or English course. Work and/or military experience. Planned major and/or meta-major. 21 Part II Developmental Education Accountability Report Questions Question 3- Student Costs and Financial Aid Opportunities Describe the course cost/fee changes, if any, students incurred as a result of the developmental education reform efforts (i.e. describe any fees associated with specific instructional strategies, varying credit hour(s), etc.). Increased student awareness of financial aid options (e.g., FAFSA deadline reminders, grant options, work-study, etc.) Accelerated nature of developmental education courses can allow students to move faster through courses and potentially reduce the number of courses taken. Emergency or short-term loan assistance available by request. College foundations provide targeted scholarships. Implemented cost saving options such as MOOCs to elevate preparation (available from Broward and St Petersburg College). Source: College Developmental Education Plans.

23 Sample Strategies for Group and Intervention Targeting Build off institutional knowledge from subject matter specialists, advisors, institutional researchers, reports coordinators, IT staff, etc. Identify the subject matter area Math, Reading, Writing with the largest number of poor performers (fails and withdrawals). By subject area identify large courses with large numbers of poor performers. By delivery strategy Co-requisite, Compression, Contextualized, Modularized identify large courses with large numbers of poor performers.
24 Sample Strategies for Group and Intervention Targeting Identify sizable sub-populations having difficulty large numbers of fails and withdrawals. Economically disadvantaged population needbased financial aid recipients? Age range data younger vs. older student populations? High School Exempt students? Variation among the colleges is anticipated.
25 Subject Matter, Course Delivery Strategy & Other Sub-Population Selections Scale\impact. Identify actionable items. Identify leading indicators. Benchmark against colleges who are performing well with the populations being targeted for improvement at your college.
