10 The placement test, AP credits or high school years determine the placement of the student. The student then is automatically awarded credits for courses below after the completion of the course they placed in with a C or better. In case a student decides not to use any of the above forms (e.g. native speakers, bilingual) the student needs the consent of the instructor and needs to make a C or better in order to get credits for lower level courses awarded. Many students, however, register for them because the institutions they plan to transfer to require a certain number of credits in a foreign language. None Students may receive credit for 2 or 4 levels of Spanish depending on the outcome of their CLEP exam. That exam is administered by Testing Services and not by our department. We use a multiple choice, in-house placement test and also a challenge exam if students want to try and test out of an entry level Spanish class. Scores vary. Because they vary, we have to determine what level of Spanish they can be placed in or what level they ve earned credit for. If they ve earned credit, they receive a grade reflecting one similar to transfer credit (TR) instead of an A, B, C, etc SEE ABOVE 33

43 WINTHROP UNIVERSITY Two units of the same language. Most BA majors in A&S require a 102 proficiency as opposed to a given number of hours. English requires a 201 proficiency.
