Current Best Hospitals Current Best Graduate Schools TOP 100 HOSPITALS Solucient ranks U.Va.'s Medical Center in Nation's Top 100 for 6th Year in a Row Several national publications and organizations regularly college editions that feature the University of Virginia prominently in a variety of categories. These include the annual U.S. News & World Report rankings of both undergraduate and graduate schools; BusinessWeek's survey of both undergraduate and graduate business schools; Newsweek/Kaplan "How to Get Into College Guide"; Forbes' magazine biennial survey of business schools; Solucient's 100 Top Hospitals; the U.S. News & World Report ranking of top hospitals; Castle Connolly Medical Ltd.'s America's Top Doctors; the National Research Council ranking of graduate programs; Princeton Review's top values; Kiplinger Personal Finance magazine's ranking of top values; and, the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education annual report on graduation rates. The University of Virginia remains the No. 2 best public university in the 2007 edition of the U.S. News and World Report rankings. In the 10 years since U.S. News began ranking public universities as a separate category, U.Va. has ranked either No. 1 or No. 2. U.Va. continues to rank in the Top 25 among the best of all national universities, public and private, tying with the University of Michigan at No. 24. The University also continues to be ranked in U.S. News' Top 25 in the Great School, Great Value category, coming in at No. 17 for the second year in a row. The Newsweek/Kaplan "How to Get Into College" guide has identified the University as one of 25 "New Ivies" a group of public and private institutions identified based on admissions statistics and interviews with administrators, faculty, students and alumni. In 1995, the prestigious National Research Council, which evaluates 274 institutions once every ten years, placed U.Va.'s graduate programs high on the list (see charts below). In its November 2003 issue, Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine ranked the University of Virginia as #2 on its list of 100 Best Values in Public Colleges. In 2004, the University Medical Center was named one of the nation's Top 100 Hospitals for the sixth consecutive year (details below). Also in 2004, U.Va. had the highest graduation and retention rate of any public college or university. U.S. News & World Report Rankings 2007 America's Best Colleges Issue August U.S. News & World Report's latest college rankings placed the University of Virginia as the nation's #2 public university and 24th (tied with the University of

2 Page 2 Michigan) among all (248) national universities. Since U.S. News began a separate listing of the top 50 public universities in 1998, U.Va. has never been lower than No. 2. In the 20-year history of the rankings, U.Va. has never dropped out of the top 25 listing. Newsweek/Kaplan "How to Get Into College" Guide The 2007 edition of the guidebook cited U.Va. as one of 25 "New Ivies," a group of public and private institutions "whose first-rate academic programs, combined with a population boom in top students, have fueled their rise in stature and favor among the nation's top students, administrators and faculty edging them to a competitive status rivaling the Ivy League." The University was one of only four public institutions among the list of "New Ivies." Read more.

4 Page 4 University of Virginia's College at Wise The 2007 U.S. News & World report ranked the University of Virginia College at Wise No. 1 among liberal art colleges in the Least Debt category. While 70 percent of its students graduate with debt, at an average debt of $9,157, it is the lowest among all liberal arts colleges. BusinessWeek Rankings In 2006, BusinessWeek began to identify the best undergraduate business programs, ranking U.Va.'s McIntire School of Commerce No. 2 in the nation. BusinessWeek used five unique measures, including a survey of more than 100,000 business majors at top schools and a poll of undergraduate recruiters. Read more. In 2004, BusinessWeek released its biennial survey of America's top graduate business schools and ranked the University's Darden School of Graduate Business Administration 12th in the nation. In addition, the Medical Center is one of only two hospitals from the Commonwealth to be selected. This is the seventh year the Medical Center has received the honor. Read more. Published annually by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., the book recognizes physicians who are considered among the best in their specialties in both patient care and research. More. Forbes Ranked the Darden School of Graduate Business at No. 8 In August 2005, Forbes (forbes.com) released a biennial survey of America's best business schools and ranked Darden 8th in the nation. The survey ranks schools based on "return on investment," which is determined by compensation five years after graduation minus tuition and the forgone salary during school. More. Princeton Review Names U.Va. Among Top 10 in Top-Value Public Undergraduate Colleges In March 2006, the Princeton Review ranked the University of Virginia seventh in its list of top-valued public undergraduate colleges. The Princeton Review looks at a variety of factors to determine which colleges make the list, including academic factors, cost and financial aid, said Robert Franek, vice president of publishing at the Princeton Review. First, the company considers the competitiveness of the schools based on admission criteria, he said. Then it considers the reactions of students and what they think of the professors and overall experience at their college or university. More. Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine In its February 2006 issue, Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine ranked the University of Virginia as #3 on its list of 100 Best Values in Public Colleges. Kiplinger's annual rankings feature public colleges and universities that offer academic excellence at an affordable price. More. U.Va. Leads Public Universities with Highest African-American Graduation Rate For the 12th consecutive year, the University of Virginia has posted the highest graduation rate for African-American students among major public institutions, according to an annual survey published in March 2006 by the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education.
