10 Why Me? Every day in America, 12 people go to work and never come home. And every year, nearly 4 million Americans suffer a serious workplace injury. Tragically, these deaths and injuries are preventable - preventable by basic safety precautions such as providing a safety harness and line to prevent workers from falling off a roof; shoring up a trench to make sure it doesn't collapse; or guarding a machine so a worker doesn't get his hand cut off.

11 Employer Safety Incentive and Disincentive Policies and Practices Section 11(c) of the OSH Act prohibits an employer from discriminating against an employee because the employee reports an injury or illness. 29 CFR [and 21 other statutes] 12/29/ Company fails to comply in OSHA whistleblower case; US marshals seize vehicle 10/29/ US Labor Department seeks more than $300,000 for Idaho whistleblower (fired employee) 02/10/ Suspension of 13 workers (for reporting injuries) prompts lawsuit by US Labor Department.

12 Safety Saves Life & Money! An Insurance company report showed that the most disabling workplace injuries and illnesses in 2010 (those involving six or more days away from work) cost American employers $51.1 billion annually nearly $1 billion a week in workers' compensation costs alone. These costs can double when you add the many indirect costs to employers such as the costs of down time for other employees as a result of an injury, investigations, claims adjustment, legal fees, and associate property damage. Costs to employees and their families from wage losses not covered by worker's compensation, household responsibilities, and family care for injured or ill workers further increase the total costs to our economy, even without considering the cost of pain and suffering. Clearly, protecting workers' safety and health is not only the right thing to do it's also good business.
