IN2IT INTERNATIONALIZATION BY INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY Erasmus+ EU Programme for education, training, youth and sport Vered Holzmann, IN2IT Project Manager
The Goal Project IN2IT aims to develop and implement an innovative technological infrastructure for the purpose of advancing internationalization in higher education, and thereby to expand the practical applications of internationalization in Israeli academic colleges, to strengthen the capacities for teaching, learning, research, and training, and to improve the quality and positioning of Israeli state-funded academic colleges in higher education. Internationalization will be accomplished by focusing on three core international academic activities: (a) (b) (c) teaching and learning academic curriculum; knowledge sharing by research communities; academy-industry cooperation. All three core academic activities will be internationalized with the support of contemporary innovative technologies.
Objectives 1) Establish a framework for assessing internationalization capability maturity level to identify leading organizational units, enable benchmarking analyses between institutions, and measure progress within institutions. 2) Form international teams for academic cooperation agreements to be engaged in multidisciplinary academic development activities. 3) Develop curriculum for international academic programs; prepare online, virtual, teaching materials, and train academic staff in the partner HEIs for effective virtual teaching and learning practices. 4) Develop international professional communities of practice (CoPs) to share knowledge and research opportunities that will be communicated via virtual tools and techniques. 5) Develop and exploit international academy-industry cooperation between partner HEIs and global organizations for academic staff to understand industry/community needs and for students' traineeship and employment experience in the global economy.
Objectives (cont.) 6) Develop and implement an innovative technological platform to support internationalization by identification and analysis of available technologies and stakeholder requirements; and then customize and integrate technological tools to foster enablers of internationalization academic activities. 7) Develop sustainability and exploitation work plans within partner colleges and on national level to expand implementation of the project practices, competencies, tools, and techniques. 8) Disseminate the project's results and outcomes to HEIs and decision makers in Israel and Europe by delivery of on-site and online materials in seminars, conferences, videos, social networks, advertisements, and more.
Rational In the current era of globalization, the role of HEIs as providers of global citizenship competencies increases (Dewey & Duff, 2009). In this context, internationalization in HEIs contributes to the development of students' skills and employability in the 21 st century. The Tempus IRIS project accomplished the goals to introduce internationalization into Israeli state-funded colleges, develop a strategy, raise awareness, increase visibility of internationalization within the campus culture, and establish a functioning International Relations Office (IRO). The successful results of IRIS yielded an environment that encourages the colleges to move forward by taking internalization to practical realization. Project IN2IT aims to build on the strategic capabilities developed in TEMPUS IRIS by developing and delivering operational capabilities for internationalizations. Project IN2IT aspires to exploit available information and communications technologies (ICT), as relatively low cost available tools to be used in the service of advancing internationalization and make it accessible to all global citizens, in the classroom and at home (Altbach, Reisberg, & Rumbley, 2009; van der Wende, 2007).
Rational The technological platform will support three major academic activities, which were identified by the consortium partners as the prominent tasks, to promote academic international relations: 1) Development and delivery of multidisciplinary international curriculum by international academic teams. Development of multidisciplinary studies, which promote open-minded, critical, and innovative thinking by international teams, will result in a glocalized curriculum that integrates global and local aspects. The developed curriculum will be supported by teaching materials to be used with modern teaching technologies such as Web 2.0 tools, MOOCs, e-learning, webinars, and videoconferencing. 2) Development and implementation of international interactive online knowledge sharing hubs for subject matter. The knowledge sharing hubs will be used by communities of practice of academic and administrative staff to streamline the international dimensions via modern applications such as social networks or file sharing utilities. 3) Development and employment of international academy-industry/community cooperation that will be performed with the collaboration of global organizations to facilitate enhancement of the skills and employability of students in the global era.
Rational The collaboration of Israeli colleges, which have strong entrepreneurial and technological capabilities, with EU universities, which have solid substantial international experience, creates a unique opportunity for the development and implementation of an advanced, state-of-the-art, sustainable technological platform for internationalization in higher education that will create a competitive advantage for colleges in Israel.
