3 MASTER IN VISUAL ARTS 1 WHAT IS THE MVA DEGREE? The Master s Degree in Visual Arts offers an excellent academic format for anyone interested in pursuing the study of art practice on an advanced postgraduate level. The purpose of the degree is to provide evidence of your ability to create and exhibit original works of art and to undertake independent research and report on it. Hence research for this degree comprises two components: the production of a body of practical work which arises from visual research, and theoretical research. These two components should be viewed as mutually interdependent. As the field of training and specialisation lies in Visual Arts, research should essentially be stimulated by visual investigations, as implied in the name of the degree. The Policy for Master s and Doctoral Degrees which is available on the Unisa website describes the broad framework for Master s and Doctoral degrees. The specific procedures are dealt with in the Procedures for Studies for Master s and Doctoral Degrees. 2 ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS 2.1 To qualify for registration for the degree MVA, a candidate must hold a four-year BA(FA) or BVA degree or an equivalent qualification, and must have obtained an average of at least 60% in the final courses. The Head of the Department reserves the right to make exceptions to this rule. 2.2 Highly professional standards of visual proficiency and familiarity with academic research procedures are prerequisites for admission to the MVA programme. The Department will require sufficient evidence of the candidate s abilities in respect of these.

4 2.3 From January 2010 all master s students are required to register for and complete a separate research module before registration for the dissertation can be finalised. This research module comprises your research proposal. The module code for Master s degree proposals is MPCHS An acceptable research proposal must be submitted in the first year of registration. Only three attempts at submitting the proposal will be permitted. 3 CURRICULUM The curriculum comprises a research proposal (MPCHS94) and a dissertation (DFVAR95) on an approved topic. The dissertation may not exceed pages of text. Furthermore, it is a requirement that the candidate creates a body of original works of art that stand in a reciprocal relationship to the research project as a whole. These works of art must be fully documented in a catalogue and must also be exhibited. The dissertation must be submitted before the exhibition of the works of art. For the degree to be awarded, the exhibition must comply with departmental requirements regarding artistic merit, professional standards, time scheduling and the venue where it is held. 4 THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE VISUAL AND THEORETICAL COMPONENTS OF THE RESEARCH It is expected that the visual research be pursued independently and, viewed both nationally and internationally, must be of an advanced postgraduate standard and must neither illustrate nor be a diagrammatic exposition of the theoretical component. Where it can be argued that the four-year BVA degree is a

5 professional degree (in contrast to the three-year BA degrees), by extension the degree MVA can also be regarded as a professional degree. Taking this into account, certain professional criteria and standards in respect of art-making in a contemporary context must, therefore, be expected as a prerequisite of any potential candidate. The theoretical component of the research is an integral part of the degree and will pursue issues raised and explored in the visual component. In terms of the undergraduate training offered by this Department, the student s authority lies in making visual images and articulating the complexities of this process in words. Given this as the nucleus of their training, students are free to draw other issues (in which they are to a lesser degree an authority) into their MVA research. Informed visual images address the complex interrelationship between histories, theologies, ideologies, philosophies, et cetera. However, since this is a Master s degree in Visual Arts, these issues should be drawn directly from the visual research and/or from areas and discourses that inform the work. This, however, does not mean that the theory should be reduced to a technical treatise. One may view the creative production of visual images as involving a complex layering and interpenetration of meanings. Two dimensions of significance may be isolated, namely the content and the form of the images. The form, which includes personalised visual devices and processes, has, in turn, its own complex network of meaning. The significance of these formal issues is crucial to the theoretical components of MVA research, and how they tie up with historical, cultural, social, economic, political, theological and philosophical aspects. The dissertation, therefore, offers the opportunity to construct theoretical arguments informed by the practical work with the relationship between the two components taking the shape of an ongoing interplay between practice and theory, where the two mutually inform and enrich each other.

6 5 DURATION OF STUDY AND DEFERMENT The duration of the study for the degree MVA is restricted to a minimum of two years and normally a maximum of four years. Only in exceptional cases will reregistration be granted for a fifth year of study. In cases where the research has been examined and referred back to the student for revision, reregistration will automatically be granted. Students may defer their studies for a maximum of two years (one year at a time), providing a strong motivation for deferment is submitted to the Registrar. 6 APPLICATION FOR REGISTRATION IMPORTANT NOTE: UNISA S NEW APPLICATION AND REGISTRATION PHASES 6.1 APPLICATION PHASE First-time students at UNISA must apply for admission on the prescribed form which is to be submitted together with the correct application fees, as well as the documents required for registration. Apply on-line: Default.asp?Cmd =ViewContent&ContentID=16832 or contact the UNISA Contact Centre at / Once the data has been recorded the system will allocate a student number which will be confirmed via , sms or mail depending on the contact details indicated on your application form. A registration package containing the relevant information brochure(s) and registration form will be mailed to you. Students who already have a UNISA student number proceed directly to the registration phase.

7 6.2 REGISTRATION PHASE Once a student number has been allocated to an individual, this student number will remain his/her student number at UNISA for all formal qualifications Honours students may apply on-line for registration after the registration period for the particular academic year has opened. However, master s and doctoral students cannot apply on-line and are advised to submit their applications directly to UNISA Muckleneuk Campus, P O Box 392, UNISA, Regional offices can only forward master s and doctoral applications to the Muckleneuk Campus. The registration form together with the minimum instalment required for registration must be submitted before the relevant closing date. Students must please take note that certain degrees are by selection and have earlier closing dates than the normal registration closing dates. Any documents required for registration submitted must be included here, if not previously submitted. Kindly note that only certified copies of academic records issued by the Registrar of the University/Institution concerned are accepted for registration purposes. Original degree certificates should not be submitted. All applications for master s and doctoral degrees will be referred to the Section: Postgraduate Qualifications (master s and doctoral degrees) where they will be assessed before being referred to the relevant academic department where the Executive Committee will rule on admission. If approved, students who have submitted their complete application (i.e. all required documents and minimum fees) will automatically be registered after admission has been approved. Other students will be informed of any remaining conditions to be complied with in order to finalise their registration. All other students will be informed of the outcome of their applications and, where applicable, the minimum study fees paid will be refunded.

8 The process outlined above may be time consuming in some cases, especially when we approach the various closing dates when most applications are invariably submitted. It is, therefore, essential that prospective students apply well in advance, especially where deadlines set by employers and sponsors have to be met. 6.3 Documents Your first application to UNISA should contain the following documents: The correctly completed UNISA registration form, including the proposed title or study area for your thesis A certified copy of your undergraduate and/or Master s certificate if this degree was not obtained at UNISA An original transcript of your full academic record(s) A CV of no more than 3 pages A research outline ( words in length or no longer than 3 pages) in which you state the title and a brief outline of the research area; your proposed methodology; and a preliminary bibliography. A portfolio of slides/cdrom/dvd of your practical work. Note: If your application is accepted, you should receive an official letter of notification from the university (via post or ). Please contact the Art History postgraduate coordinator with any queries. 7 CONCURRENT REGISTRATION Registration for undergraduate modules or an Honours/Master s paper in another subject (concurrent registration): 7.1 Registered Master s degree students may also register in the same academic year for two undergraduate modules or for one fourth-level paper or the corresponding number of modules on the same level for non-degree purposes (NDP) if necessary, on condition that these modules will contribute towards their Master s research, or some other

9 relevant academic purpose is served. In either case you will need to submit a written justification. 7.2 Note that you may only register for NDP modules if you have satisfied the admission requirements for those modules. 7.3 Applications for concurrent registration must be submitted to the University at least three weeks before the registration closing date of the NDP modules. 8 THE RESEARCH PROPOSAL MODULE The College of Human Sciences has introduced the Research Proposal Module, the code of which is for the MA in Visual Arts: MPCHS94. The procedures are set out below: 8.1 The research outline submitted with your application for registration will be considered by the members of the Departmental Higher Degrees Committee, who might accept, reject or question the proposal. 8.2 If the research outline is rejected, or questioned, the Higher Degrees Committee may recommend one of the following: (a) (b) (c) (d) A change of research topic and the submission of a new research outline. The submission of an essay of academic standard as prerequisite for a revised or changed research outline. A further submission of practical work of the required standard. Registration for the Advanced University Diploma in Visual Arts also offered by the Department. 8.3 Once the Higher Degrees Committee has approved the preliminary title and proposal, the candidate will proceed to write the proper proposal.

At that stage the Higher Degrees Committee will appoint a supervisor and, if deemed necessary, a joint supervisor. 8.5 Once the supervisors have been nominated, a meeting is scheduled between the applicant and the supervisors where the applicant will be required to present a body of recent work. With reference to these works, and to the theoretical interests of the applicant, areas of visual research will be identified, and on the basis of this process of extraction, the framework for a proposal will be forged. 8.6 In collaboration with the supervisors, a timetable and work schedule for the first year of registration will be compiled. 8.7 By the end of this period, the candidate must have completed a considerable body of visual and theoretical research and prepared a final title and research proposal. Note that this proposal must centre on the visual nature of this degree and take into account the interrelationship between the visual and theoretical components of this research. 8.8 The proposal is then submitted to the Higher Degrees Committee. Once the research proposal is accepted, the candidate will pass the research module and be permitted to register for the dissertation. 9 HOW TO WRITE THE RESEARCH PROPOSAL Submitting a good proposal document is the key to the admission for a Master s degree. This section contains detailed information on the format, structure and contents of your proposal. It is essential that your proposal is an attractive document which is free from spelling, grammatical and typing errors. Reference

11 techniques should be used consistently and pages should be numbered. A proposal should be about double-spaced pages in size 12-point font and consist of the following: 9.1 A clearly defined title The title must be carefully considered, be concise and indicate the core or essence of the research. Only refer to the principal and over-arching elements pertaining to the central argument of the dissertation. 9.2 Scope and nature of the research Aim for a clearly delineated area of investigation and be explicit about the parameters of the research. Focus sharply on aspects within the delineated scope of research. Emphasise existing gaps which might be filled by the proposed research. Define inter-disciplinary relationships if and where applicable. 9.3 Premise State the premise(s) of your argument(s) unambiguously. Say I will demonstrate that... or It is my intention to establish that Artists/artworks that will be researched Identify these as far as possible, although you may change later by discarding some or adding others. 9.5 Seminal sources Mention seminal sources including books, articles, exhibitions or visual texts that have motivated and inspired your choice of research topic. A preliminary bibliography must be included. Mr Dawie Malan, the subject librarian for Art History and Visual Arts, can be contacted at (012) for assistance. 9.6 Relationship of theory to practice A proposal must be lucid on the relationship of ideas and arguments to the research methodology that will be used

12 as well as to the type and choice of visual texts that will be studied. 9.7 Relevance of ideas to own practical work The relationship between the theoretical and practical research components as well as the form-content relationships must be clearly articulated. 9.8 Use of language Your proposal must be free of typos and grammar mistakes. Avoid long sentences and remain to the point. Most important of all - do not try to impress the reader by obscure and complex use of language or cloak weak premises in convoluted language. Although careful consideration must be given to the title and the proposal at this stage, both the title and the nature of the contents could be changed or redefined at a later stage. The proposal should be viewed as an essential tool in defining and limiting the areas of interest during the initial stages of the research, and should later serve as a guideline in distilling and crystallising the research. 10 SUPERVISION Only teaching staff with the minimum qualification of an MA degree may be appointed as supervisors for master's dissertations. Teaching staff qualified with an MVA will be appointed as supervisors (specifically to deal with the visual research), though staff qualified with an MA in Art History may be appointed as joint supervisors in order to deal with specialised areas of theoretical interest. The names and qualifications of the teaching staff, together with their individual research interests, appear at the end of this brochure. Candidates may also make suggestions of their preferences in respect of the appointment of supervisors. In the case where the specific theoretical interests of a candidate are interdisciplinary in nature, or where the

13 theoretical interests are of such a specialised nature that adequate guidance cannot be given by the teaching staff of this Department, a joint supervisor may be appointed from outside the Department. The task of the supervisor is to direct and monitor the progress of the research. Candidates residing in South Africa are expected to meet their supervisors at least twice during each academic year to discuss their work. It is essential to point out that master s research should be conducted on an independent basis and that the intellectual and creative independence of the candidate be assessed and his/her research methods be tested. For this reason the nature of master s supervision differs from guidance given at undergraduate level. Your relationship with the person who supervises you is extremely important. For the contract between you to be successful, it is imperative that both sides know what to expect. For this purpose students and supervisors are expected to adhere to a supervision agreement/code of conduct which must be signed by both parties as soon as a supervisor has been appointed. This agreement spells out the following duties and responsibilities of both parties: 10.1 You can expect your supervisor to be a mentor who has relevant knowledge and experience; encourages your interest in your topic; corresponds, converses and, wherever possible and convenient, meets with you; treats you kindly and respectfully; directs you to relevant information resources; monitors your progress and reports back to the Coordinator of Higher Degrees; supports your applications for funding; advises you about the direction of your research; helps you to set short-term and long-term goals;

14 guides your research, indicating any gaps in your reading; reads your chapters and responds within a reasonable time; provides detailed commentary on your ideas and arguments; corrects or points out minor grammatical and stylistic weaknesses; suggests revisions that will improve your argument; sets clear timeframes for you to adhere to; discusses the strengths and weaknesses of your dissertation; assesses your dissertation until it is ready for submission Your supervisor will expect you to show enthusiasm for and interest in your topic; be self-motivated and self-reliant; commit your time, energy and resources to the dissertation; conduct yourself courteously and respectfully; work with the subject librarian in drawing up reading lists; be computer literate so that chapters can be submitted online and commented on using the track changes facility; read widely and critically and keep meticulous records; stay up to date with the latest critical developments in your chosen field; meet pre-arranged deadlines and come to meetings prepared; submit work according to a mutually agreed timetable; produce neatly typed, well-researched, well-written drafts; produce scholarly work; be thoroughly acquainted with the Harvard system of referencing; respond positively to corrections and criticisms; be resourceful about problem-solving;

15 adhere to a strict code of ethics with regard to referencing and acknowledging of sources; complete your dissertation within a reasonable period. While your supervisor may suggest changes in the way you have organised your material or presented your argument, you should not expect him/her to provide you with a blueprint or to draw conclusions for you. 11 PROGRESS REPORT It is a requirement that students submit a brief report every year, indicating what progress you have made and what you plan for the following year. You need to fill in your report on the designated form, to reach your supervisor before the end of October of each year. Your supervisor will comment on and submit your report at the next meeting of the Higher Degrees Committee. Recommendations for re-registration will be made after consultation between the supervisors and the Higher Degrees Committee. 12 RE-REGISTRATION Your registration must be renewed annually by submitting a duly completed registration form with the prescribed fees before the closing date. Recommendation for re-registration will depend on the progress and, above all, on the quality of the visual and theoretical research produced during the course of the year. Submission of the progress report will also be taken into account for re-registration. Recommendation for reregistration will be made after consultation with the supervisor and the Higher Degrees Committee. Permission to reregister for a fourth year of MVA studies will be granted if the candidate has completed at least three chapters of his/her dissertation and has submitted a draft of all other chapters, that is, a draft of the full dissertation.

16 The University reserves the right to refuse re-registration for the degree if the progress of candidates is unsatisfactory. 13 HIGHER DEGREES SEMINAR A Departmental Higher Degrees Seminar is scheduled each year for postgraduate students in Pretoria. All candidates are required to present their visual research for discussion, criticism and evaluation at this seminar, as well as a theoretical paper on a topic related to their visual and theoretical research. With the exception of overseas students all are expected to attend. Only if valid reasons for not attending the seminar are submitted to the Coordinator of Higher Degrees (copies must also be submitted to the supervisors), can a candidate submit the research paper and his/her current visual research (or in strongly motivated cases photographic documentation of this research). Details of the seminar programme are posted to all registered candidates as soon as registration has been finalised. 14 THE PRACTICAL COMPONENT You are expected to produce a body of practical work that is of a professional standard and that complements the written research component. The quantity of work is dependent on the nature of the visual research and resultant artworks. It is the responsibility of the candidate to ensure that all necessary equipment is supplied and operational. The candidate is examined on the presentation of the exhibition and therefore your supervisor(s) will not assist you in this regard. The candidate must present a professional one-person exhibition at any acceptable venue in Gauteng. The UNISA Art Gallery, Main Campus is also available for this purpose. When choosing to exhibit in the UNISA Gallery the candidate must, in consultation with the supervisors, liaise with the curator of the Art Gallery, (depending on the gallery selected for the

17 examination exhibition) to book the gallery and to plan the exhibition space. The exhibition must be accompanied by a catalogue. The catalogue must include an artist s statement, list of illustrations and empirical data, good quality documentation and a CV. Candidates are allowed to exhibit works that form part of the visual component of their research at public galleries during the course of their studies. If such works are sold, it is the candidate s responsibility to have those works returned, on loan, for examination purposes. Works executed as part of the visual research must also be available for possible inclusion in student exhibitions held by the Department of Art History and Visual Arts. 15 FINAL PRESENTATION AND EXAMINATION The final evaluation of the research will be based on the assessment of its visual and theoretical components. Apart from the internal examiners, external examiners are also appointed to evaluate the research. The examiners must be satisfied that the candidate is capable of independent research in respect of the creative visual component, as well as in the field of theoretical academic research. Once the supervisors have recommended submission, the candidate must inform the Registrar, the Chairperson of the Department and the supervisors in writing of his/her intention to submit the dissertation and to present the examination exhibition. The theoretical component must be professionally presented in respect of layout, typesetting and binding. For the final presentation of the dissertation, please consult the brochure General Information: Studies for Master s and Doctor s Degrees.

18 If a candidate wishes to submit the dissertation for examination on 30 November of a particular year, he/she must present the final draft of the dissertation to the supervisors before the end of August of that year. For submission on 15 June, the submission date of the final draft is 15 March of the same year. The dissertation must be submitted before the exhibition of practical work. If for any reason the student cannot comply with this requirement, he/she can apply for an extension of max. 6 months. 16 SUMMARY OF DEADLINES DURING ACADEMIC YEAR MONTH January February March April May June EVENT Research proposal module students: final deadline for receipt of final proposal so that registration for the dissertation, if approved by the Committee, can take place Registration and re-registration closes; Research proposal module students encouraged to begin working on proposal and submit it to their supervisors as soon as possible Final year students: deadline to notify supervisor of intention to submit dissertation for examination (September graduation) Research proposal module students: submit first draft of proposal Final year students: deadline for submission of dissertation for examination (September graduation)

21 USEFUL INFORMATION FOR ALL POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS 1 RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL) Recognition of Prior Learning is an assessment process for obtaining credit in a module or course offered by UNISA. Individuals who have acquired learning through non-formal education such as work experience, self-study, volunteer activities and other life experience, can be assessed and subsequently awarded credit towards an educational module or course at UNISA (UNISA RPL brochure, 2002). If you would like to have your prior learning assessed by UNISA, please obtain a copy of the RPL brochure from the Registrar (Academic) or from the Department. Enquiries regarding RPL can be directed to: Ms Maria Snyman UNISA Florida Campus Private Bag X6 FLORIDA 1710 Telephone: (011) /3795/2835 Fax: (011) rpl@unisa.ac.za or msnyman@unisa.ac.za Website: Note that RPL applications take some time to be processed and we recommend that you make your enquiries well in advance in order to submit your RPL application on time. 2 PLAGIARISM Plagiarism is the act of taking words, ideas and thoughts of others and passing them off as your own. It is a form of theft which involves a number of dishonest academic activities.

22 The Disciplinary Code for Students (2004) is given to all students at registration. Students are advised to study the Code, especially Sections and (2004:3-4). Please consult the University s Policy on Copyright Infringement and Plagiarism as well. At any degree level, the academic staff treats plagiarism in a very serious light, not only because it is illegal and viewed as dishonest by the University, but also because it shows that students do not understand the work properly and therefore are not making adequate progress. Please do not plagiarise in your work, otherwise there is every possibility you will receive a failing mark. Consult the University policy and the Tutorial Letter ARHALLY/301 on referencing techniques for more information. 3 FURTHER READING Please find below a list of books containing further information on dissertation writing as well as research and correct bibliographic citation methods.
