2 ACADEMIC COMPONENT The ISIB will offer 60 hours of classroom instruction (eight ECTS credits) in seminar format on the topics listed below. More specifically, the program focuses on: globalization and the growing role of emerging markets the increasing role of information technologies both as a competitive weapon and an engine of globalization the growing competition caused by deregulation, globalization, and innovations and the strategic responses that they may call for a renewed spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation that is in large part fueled by globalization and information technology the growing dominance of service industries in the global stage, which is triggered by the information technology revolution. CULTURAL COMPONENT INTERNATIONAL SUMMER INSTITUTE AT BENTLEY JULY 5 to 28, 2010 Bentley University, a leader in business education located just minutes from downtown Boston, offers an innovative and exciting program: The International Summer Institute at Bentley (ISIB). The ISIB is designed to meet the needs of business students for summer study abroad in the United States. The institute offers participants an opportunity to learn about the key business trends/issues in the new millennium through academic seminars, meetings with business executives and company visits. The program also includes sightseeing in Boston and New York City as well as several cultural activities and excursions. Organized cultural activities and excursions will be an integral part of the ISIB. These activities are designed to enhance students understanding of American culture and history. Program participants will: enjoy excursions into Boston and New York City partake in Boston s Independence Day celebration spend a weekend in New York City; and see a Broadway show, visit museums, and more participate in National Night, a Bentley event that will introduce the culture of the participants home countries through a variety of cultural presentations such as skits, dances and songs performed by participants interact with Bentley students who will accompany participants to all cultural activities and excursions meet American and international students enrolled at Bentley spend a day on one of the beautiful beaches of New England 1

3 VISA REQUIREMENTS We will provide supporting letters/documents to facilitate your entry visa into the United States. In general, citizens of countries that fall under the Visa Waiver Program (most European countries) can enter the U.S. without having a tourist visa (B-1 or B-2) stamp in their passport. Non-Visa Waiver country nationals and non-european students currently residing in Europe will need a B-1 or B-2 tourist visa for entry to the U.S., which can be obtained from the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. TUITION AND FEES The program fee is US $3,400 per student and covers: tuition all reading materials full room and board on the Bentley campus (three meals per day) all organized cultural events and excursions free transportation from Bentley to Harvard Square in Cambridge, where students can access train service into Boston Travel to the United States and incidental expenses are not included in the program fee. HOW TO APPLY Interested students must submit a completed application and the required documents by Friday, April 16, For details of the application process and to download an application form, please visit the ISIB web site at ACADEMIC SEMINARS The ISIB will consist of five seminars focused on key business trends and issues in the new millennium. All seminars will be taught by Bentley full-time faculty who are experts in their respective fields. The reading materials will include articles from such prestigious publications as Harvard Business Review, Sloan Management Review, California Management Review and trade publications such as The Economist, Wall Street Journal, and Fortune. Case studies from Harvard Business School will also be an integral part of the seminar discussions. Students are expected to complete all the reading assignments prior to the beginning of each seminar. To facilitate student preparation, all reading assignments and cases will be made available to accepted students electronically via the ISIB web site. In addition to advanced preparation, students are expected to spend a minimum of 20 hours per week on projects and assignments outside the classroom. Student performance will be assessed through exams, written case reports, hands-on projects, exercises, and class participation. SEMINARS Business Innovation through Advanced Information Technology This seminar focuses on the advanced, innovative use of information technologies to create sustainable business innovations. This seminar discusses, particularly from the North American perspective, how innovative organizations are using advanced IT solutions to transform the way they do business and how they discover new opportunities created by the new technologies. Competitive Strategies in the New Millennium This seminar will probe two fundamental questions: what are the key drivers of growing global competition and rivalry, and why are some companies more or less successful than others in navigating their competitive environment? The discussion will first focus on a framework for identifying and analyzing those competitive forces, domestic and international, that shape the intensity and nature of competition and determine corporate survival and profitability. Next, the discussion will shift to business strategy, including international competitive strategy, as a firm s road map for navigating its competitive environment and as a key driver of its success. 2 3

4 Entrepreneurial Thinking and Collaborative Innovation The United States outranks the rest of the world on key entrepreneurial framework conditions such as financial support, entrepreneurship education and training, and social norms favoring entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurial thinking increasingly means assembling networks of collaborative partners who together develop and market innovations. The seminar presents simple frameworks that help participants organize their activities over time as they learn to follow the natural entrepreneurial process, use partners as resources, and face the management challenges of collaborative innovation. Globalization and the Rise of Multinationals from the Emerging Markets Multinational corporations have traditionally originated from developed countries. While globalization has opened new markets for developed-country multinationals, it has also led to the creation of new multinationals from emerging economies. This seminar examines the evolution of emerging-market multinationals and its effect on competitive strategies of developed-market MNCs. Students will be able to compare MNCs from Brazil, China, India, and Russia and their impact on the global marketplace through case studies and group projects. World-Class Service The service sector is growing significantly in every one of the world s economies, and represents a major portion of the economies in the more advanced countries. In addition, many manufacturing companies now recognize that they can obtain a competitive advantage in the marketplace with their products by providing their customers with outstanding service. For both of these reasons, there has been an increased emphasis in the study of service management. This seminar will provide students with an introduction to the major elements of service management and reinforce these concepts with visits to some of the world-class businesses in the Greater Boston area.
