1 Medical Assisting Program Summer 2015 Semester Syllabus COURSE TITLE: PREREQUISITES: INSTRUCTOR: MAS-120 Clinical Practicum MAS 105, MAS 110 ; all program requirements necessary to perform practicum in the physician office environment Professor Carole Zeglin, MS, BS, MT, RMA zeglinc@wccc.edu; COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course provides a supervised clinical placement to practice the administrative and clinical skills necessary to function as a medical assistant in a physician s office and other designated medical settings. Administrative skills include receptionist duties and appointment scheduling, medical correspondence, record handling, medical transcription, maintaining patient accounts, billing and processing insurance claims. Clinical skills include patient preparation and assisting with diagnostic and surgical procedures, examination assisting, specimen collection and processing, performing basic office diagnostic procedures, medication administration, and aseptic technique. METHODOLOGY: Assigned to various settings to practice medical assisting skills for an unpaid practicum experience. REQUIRED TEXT: Booth, Medical Assisting, Administrative and Clinical Procedures 5 th edition, 2014 COURSE OBJECTIVES: This course provides an opportunity to: 1. Display professionalism within a health care environment. 2. Apply communication skills to patients and office personnel. 3. Perform administrative duties within a physician s office or other health care setting. 4. Perform clinical duties within a physician s office or other health care setting. 5. Apply legal concepts related to the role of Medical Assistant. 6. Apply to take the CMA national certification exam.
2 LEARNING OUTCOMES: The student by the end of this course will: 1. Work within the scope and depth of training and education received as a medical assistant. 2. Exhibit professional appearance and attitude; exhibit cleanliness and good hygiene. 3. File patient records and charts with 100% accuracy within the time limit given by the supervisor. 4. Locate appropriate patient information, verify all CPT and ICD codes, and complete HCFA insurance claim form and document within 50 minutes with 100% accuracy. 5. Use a sphygmomanometer and stethoscope, perform blood pressure measurements within +/- 4mm Hg of the supervisor s reading, within two minutes, and document the reading with 100% accuracy. 6. Perform EKG with 100% accuracy in lead placement and documentation within time limit indicated by supervisor. 7. Interpret request for urine specimen, collect specimen, perform urine dipstick analysis, and document results with 100% accuracy. 8. Interpret a laboratory order for blood test, select appropriate collection tubes, perform phlebotomy, label tubes, complete laboratory form, and prepare correct blood specimen with 100% accuracy in a reasonable time. 9. Interpret order for injection, select appropriate equipment, calculate dosage, observe 7 rights of medication administration, and document with 100% accuracy within time limit set by supervisor. 10. Exhibit continual improvement in quality and quantity of work. EVALUATION METHODS: The evaluation in this course will be the result of observations and supervisions of skill performance of the medical assistant student in the practicum setting. The agreement of the supervisor in the agency (the preceptor) and the WCCC MAS instructor (the course supervisor) will determine the final course grade. The weight of each evaluation will be as follows: Preceptor evaluations Instructor evaluation % GRADING SCALE: A = B = C = D = Student will receive a warning letter. F = Below 69 or committed act of academic dishonesty. In order to earn a passing grade in the course, the student must successfully complete all of the psychomotor and affective domain objectives A= Very good All skills are consistently performed with 100% accuracy during the discrete observation time designated by the preceptor or instructor. All behaviors (attendance, punctuality, appearance, demeanor, etc. were met 100% of the time during the practicum. Page 2
3 B= Good Nearly all (90%) of skills were consistently performed with 100% accuracy under the above conditions. The remaining skills could be performed with 100% accuracy with some coaching by the preceptor or instructor. All behaviors (attendance, punctuality, appearance, demeanor, etc. were met 100% of the time during the practicum. C= Average More than 75% of skills were performed with 100% accuracy under the above conditions. The remaining skills could be performed with 100% accuracy following one demonstration by the preceptor or instructor. All behaviors (attendance, punctuality, appearance, demeanor, etc. were met 100% of the time during the practicum. D= Less than average Less than 75 % of skills were performed with 100% accuracy under the above conditions; or the specific skills could not be performed with 100% accuracy even after demonstration; or all behaviors (attendance, punctuality, appearance, demeanor, etc. were not met 100% percent of the time during the practicum. F= Did not complete requirements Could not demonstration 100 % accuracy for all required skills under the above conditions before the end of the practicum experience and/or all behaviors (attendance, punctuality, appearance, demeanor, etc. were not met 100% of the time COURSE POLICIES: The purpose of the Practicum experience is to provide students with a supervised clinical experience. This unpaid experience will be performed in local and regional physician offices and hospital laboratories. The designated site supervisors and the Medical Assisting Practicum Coordinator will supervise the Medical Assisting students. The evaluations by the site supervisors (preceptors) and the Practicum Coordinator will have equal weight in the final evaluation for the course. This process is explained in the evaluation methods and grading scale for the course. 100% Performance of any and/or all of the observed administrative and clinical skills must be demonstrated before the end of the practicum in order to pass the course. All behaviors (attendance punctuality, appearance, demeanor, etc.) must be demonstrated 100% of the time during the practicum in order to pass the course. The evaluations by the site supervisors (preceptor) and the WCCC Practicum Coordinator will reflect the student s skill performance accuracy, quality of work, quantity of work, and attitude and attendance. These evaluations will be documented to support the final grade for this course. Practicum journals will be checked weekly and will be considered in the final grade. Students are responsible for all communication with the site supervisors (preceptors) and the Practicum Coordinator concerning scheduled days, hours, absences, and make-up times. You may be required documentation in the event of an absence. Page 3
4 A minimum grade of C must be achieved in order to satisfactorily complete this course. In addition, medical assisting students must obtain a passing score on all psychomotor and affective domain objectives (competencies) in the course. CAAHEP accreditation requires 100% of all medical assisting graduates pass 100% of all competencies. Eighty hours of phlebotomy experience and 150 hours of office experience constitute the total, unpaid practicum experience. 6 MAS 120 Practicum Online Journal Please keep a short description of the duties performed during your practicum in the Discussion Board of Blackboard. At least one entry a week is required and comments to fellow students are recommended. You should focus on the procedures observed/practiced and how they relate to your classroom study. For example, you might include the following information: urine dipstick analysis; different manufacturer from method in school, same timing sequence, same color changes noted. This is easier/more difficult than in the classroom setting. Time Sheets Each student is accountable for the completion of weekly time sheets. They are your responsibility to have signed and delivered on the following Monday. You may fax, mail, or place in my mailbox at weekly. FAX: ATTN: Carole Zeglin Evaluation Sheets Each student is responsible for seeing that each clinical supervisor has a packet with all information. You are to see that each supervisor has an evaluation sheet to evaluate you and that they have an envelope to mail the confidential evaluation to me. Evaluations are not to be given to the student. You are also to evaluate each site that you are assigned. All original paperwork must be submitted to the practicum coordinator. Identification Badges Student ID badges are to be worn each day during every rotation of your practicum. All property of practicum sites: badges, parking permits, books, etc. must be returned to the site or your grade will be an incomplete until the return of the property or failure if non-compliant. Insurance Each student must provide documentation of student insurance. Drug Screen Each student is responsible for obtaining their drug screen in a timely fashion for the results to be available for their first day of practicum experience. Page 6
