2 THE SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS AND FINANCE The School is recognised as one of the leading centres for teaching and research in economics and finance in Australasia. We currently have approximately 30 academic staff. Our teaching and research has generated an impressive record of research articles in leading academic and professional journals, books, reports, and theses. The School is located at the Pipitea Campus next to Parliament and in the centre of Wellington s business district. We have close links with the Reserve Bank, Treasury, and other agencies. 3 MASTER S IN ECONOMICS OR FINANCE The aim of the master s programmes is to provide students with an opportunity to develop their research skills in economics or finance, with a view to career enhancement or as preparation for doctoral study, either at Victoria University of Wellington or elsewhere. Overseas students must apply through Victoria International. Domestic students can enrol online. Students can work towards a Master s in Economics or Finance in one of two ways: 1. By coursework and thesis This option is suitable for most students who have completed an undergraduate degree in economics. Most overseas students will take this route to a master s degree. Students will only be admitted once a year in February/March, and will normally finish in June the following year. 2. By thesis only This option is only suitable for students who have already completed an Australian or New Zealand-style honours year. Students may be admitted at any time of year. 3

4 MCA or MA IN ECONOMICS By coursework and thesis (4 trimesters, full time) Year ONe Trimester 1: ECON 402 or 404; two further courses from ECON ; ECON 430 Trimester 2: ECON 403 or 405; two further courses from ECON ; ECON 430 At the end of Trimester 2 (or as soon as 120 points have been attempted): Full-time students who have passed all 120 points attempted to an appropriate standard will be permitted to proceed to the 90-point thesis. The normal criterion will be a GPA of 5.5 or above. Students who have passed all 120 points attempted but not to the appropriate standard, or who have failed a course, will normally not be permitted to continue in the programme. It may be possible for them to enter an alternative programme, eg. the GDipCom in Economics or the PGDipArts in Economics. Trimester 3 (November to February): ECON 592: two-thirds of the 90-point thesis YEAR two Trimester 4: ECON 592: one-third of 90-point thesis; two further courses from ECON Victoria University of Wellington

7 ENTRY REQUIREMENTS for MCA or MA by coursework and thesis For international students, a good undergraduate degree in economics or finance (at least a B average in the final year of study) is required, as well as satisfaction of the University s English language requirements. Domestic students should check the School s prospectus or website for more details. MCA OR MA IN ECONOMICS MCA IN FINANCE By thesis only, one year full time Assessment consists of a 120 point thesis (usually 30,000 to 40,000 words). ENTRY REQUIREMENTS for MCA or MA by thesis An honours degree (or equivalent) in Economics or Finance with 2nd class, division 1 honours or better. Workload Full-time students can expect the workload to be equivalent to 40 hours per week. 7
