2 The Faculty of Health Sciences was created in 1998, as part of the University of Beira Interior (UBI) located in the city of Covilhã It is fully articulated with 3 District Hospitals and 5 Main Health Care Centres. Principal aims: - to create a degree that combines full quality medical education, within a humanistic context, with a strong component of practical training; - to promote early contact with patients and the health system, (hospital and community) - to make students aware of relevant ongoing research It also comprises a Health Sciences Research Centre Students are motivated towards being engaged in scence projects.

8 PEDAGOGICAL MODEL Small learning groups: personalised and continuous focus on the student during the training process; Tutorials as discussion sessions; Objective-based learning; New information technologies: regular tool for learning and working; Acquisition of knowledge in a clinical context during the training process; Committee of tutors: follow and monitor learning progress of students.

10 Curriculum development What we have Integrationmodules (exhumanbody; Introductionto Pathology; Medical and Surgical Clinics) Transversal Clinical Skills Programme What we want To indroduce PBL and clinical cases sessions to promote horizontal and vertical integration in the main topics of medical contents and to induce clinical reasoning skills. To develop the communication skills component in the Clinical Skills Programmme

11 Skills Practical learning objectives focused on: a) diagnostic techniques and methods (radiology, nuclear medicine, laboratory, general pathology) b) treatment procedures (medical, surgical, rehabilitation, health promotion and prevention). Assessment of skills carried out by a team of experts in accordance with carefully designed methodological grids.

14 Intranet Web Based Course Management system that enables administration and deployment of learning materials to tutors and students. Allows tutors and students to navigate through pedagogical units they are enrolled in, to view their learning contents, skills, classifications etc. Allows intercommunication.

16 Assessment What we have an assessment tool that allows us: To assess students online and have speedy results for analysis To analyse the quality of the tests(by using difficulty and discrimination indexes) thousands of items related to all the contents of the curriculum What we want To develop an item bank that permits the automatic generation of tests To use a virtual patient informatic tool to assess students in outpatient clinics To develop an e-portfolio to assess students in a professional context (6th yearofmedicaldegree)

17 Web based assessments The web-based assessment management system enables us to create questions and organize them into tests. Students carry out their theoretical examinations on computers assigned to them.
