2 What is a Project Management? A process of planning, organizing, staffing, scheduling, leading, and controlling of project activities to reach desired goal within specified time and budget. Managing on going activities is different from managing projects. Workshop-I 7 Workshop-I 8 Ongoing Activities. Repeat activities No defined beginning and ending Similar output is desired each time Everyone in the team do similar work Workshop-I 9 Project activities. Unique Temporary Pre-defined beginning and ending Only one outcome accomplish project goal Need people with multiple skills in the team Workshop-I 10 Skill test. Example of on-going activities. Mr. Ahmed manages a team of technicians for repairing roads in Kabul. Every day his crews identify road damages and repair them as they finds them Is Mr. Ahmed s group assigned to a project or ongoing work? Why? Workshop-I 11 Mr. Ahmed's group work is doing ongoing work They are repeating set of tasks In their work there is no a clear beginning or ending They are producing about the same outcome everyday Workshop-I 12 2
3 Skill test. Ms. Rahman's team is developing a training manual on how to repair road. Her team has engineers, estimators, writers, and graphic designers. Ms. Rahman's work began on May 1, 2006, and must be completed by July 1, Is Rahman's team assigned to a project or on-going activities? Why? Workshop-I 13 Example of project activities. Ms. Rahman's team is working in a project Unique: One of a kind Temporary: 2-month duration Pre-defined beginning and ending: May 1 to July 1, 2006 Only one outcome: Training Manual Need people with multiple skills in the team: engineers, estimators, writers, and graphic designers Workshop-I 14 Program Management A program is bigger and last longer May include multiple projects. For example: Afghanistan Reconstruction may be a multi-year program Building certain road or a bridge are shorter term projects Difference between project and regular management?
