9 MO513E Environmental impact assessment DEPARTMENT : EME PROGRAMME(S) : MSc Eco Design and Sustainable Management CONTACT HOURS / FORMAT : 30 hours STUDY TIME : CREDITS : 6 ECTS PRE-REQUISITE MODULES : None MODULE OBJECTIVES : At the end of this course, students should: Be able to identify current and future environmental issues and impacts as well as any other associated environmental concerns. Be able to use the principal methods of environmental impact assessment MODULE INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES (ILOs): Upon completion of this course, students should be able to demonstrate that they have acquired the knowledge and skills to: Identify and interpret the most frequently used environmental impacts Identify the mechanisms: anthropogenic sources, relations of cause and effect leading to damage. Define the principal methods of environmental impact assessment TOPICS COVERED: Major Environmental Impacts and associated indicators Applied Ecology: Air pollution, climatic change, water pollution, soil pollution, loss of biodiversity, depletion of resources This knowledge is first addressed through scientific popularization which can be easily understood by all. Staying at the level of scientific popularization is justified since the concerned subjects are meant for a vast public who will need to understand the finer points of eco-design. Waste management household and industrial waste: the main sectors of waste management and their environmental impact. Every product will become waste at the end of its useful life, and how waste is managed weighs considerably on the overall environmental impact of a product. Different methods of dealing with products at the end of their useful life must be compared, keeping in mind each method s environmental impact Environmental impact indicators Overall environmental impact is difficult to assess, the indicators that are used need to be fully understood, from both their advantages as well as their limitations Life Cycle Assessment: Evaluation of environmental impacts of products Life Cycle Assessment is the reference method to establish or contribute to an ecodesign approach. The course presents this method, its tools, and case studies.
10 The principle: multi-step and multi-criteria analysis. The presentation of LCA principles explains the complexity of the method, which takes into consideration environmental multi-criteria as well as the life cycle phases, from the extraction of raw material to the end of life/waste steps. The following steps comprise a life cycle impact assessment: selection of impact categories, classification, characterization, (normalization, grouping, weighting) and impact measurement. LCA methodology according to ISO consists of the following phases: definition of goal and scope, interpretation, inventory analysis, and impact assessment Other Environmental Impact evaluation methods Other methods are used to evaluate the environmental impact of a product, sometimes the logic is less comprehensive (carbon footprint, focused on impact), or more general (ecological footprint). Two of these currently used methods are presented here. Ecological Footprint: the tool, its advantages, its limitations, example Carbon Footprint: the tool, its advantages, its limitations, example LINK WITH AND CONTRIBUTION TO PROGRAMME: Apply management knowledge and skills, tools and methods in a variety of business contexts and situations Adapt to a rapidly changing environment, METHODS OF ASSESSMENT: Assessment Individual /Group Type (oral, written) Length of exam (when applicable) Weight % ILOs assessed Continuous TBA TBA TBA 40% TBA Final TBA TBA TBA 60 % TBA BIBLIOGRAPHY: Aissani, L., Intégration des paramètres spatio-temporels et des risques d accident à l analyse du cycle de vie : application à la filière hydrogène énergie et à la filière essence. 13 NEW Economic, societal, technological and geopolitical prospective DEPARTMENT : PROGRAMME(S) : MSc Eco Design and Sustainable Management CONTACT HOURS / FORMAT : 30 hours STUDY TIME : CREDITS : 6 ECTS PRE-REQUISITE MODULES : None MODULE OBJECTIVES : If we have all heard of the last marvels of Apple and Google, can we talk about 30 seconds about these new companies that reshape our world when they are not based in industrialized countries, but on the contrary in the BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India and China)? Many macroeconomic insights have been deepened since Goldman Sachs Jim o Neill coined the concept in Nevertheless, the knowledge in terms of business models of worldwide BRIC companies is almost tantamount to zero. However, their performance are exceptionally high because these companies have increased their participation from 0 to 10% of the Forbes 2000 index in the last seven years and 50% of the worldwide growth between 2000 and 2008 comes from these 4 countries. Since the financial crisis, the figure in 2012 has increased to 65%... Even if a few names can be familiar to you such as Lenovo and TCL for China, Infosys and Tata for India, Gazprom and Rosneft for Russia and Petrobras and Vale in Brazil, these companies are widely unknown. In this course we will first analyze the macroeconomic changes that have enabled emerging countries to end up with the leadership of industrialized countries since the First Industrialized Revolution. Second, we will focus from a geopolitical point of view on the challenges bound to energies. Third, we will question the role of the major actors (State, Corporations and NGOs) and see until what extend they face properly the key societal issues. And last, but not least, we will analyse the role of technologies in this global framework, all to give you a better perspective to benchmark best practices. MODULE INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES (ILOs): Upon completion of this course, students should be able to demonstrate that they have acquired the knowledge and skills to: describe the world in which they live and be able to connect it with their field of activity, understand the benchmark in their activity should not be done exclusively with industrialized countries but as well with emerging countries due to explosion of disruptive business models in the latter,
14 demonstrate their ability to take some sound-breaking decisions with relevant but incomplete insights and be familiar with worldwide news to integrate into daily professional life. TOPICS COVERED: A 2000 perspective on the worldwide geo-economy. The end of the benefits of the industrial revolution for industrialized countries and the resurgence of the BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India & China) Illustration with cases of Tata & Baidu Geopolitical issues about Energy: Chernobyl, Fukushima and the alternatives The gas challenge: between LNG, Whale gas and the Arctic resources The Renewable Energies The Corporation and the societal challenges Bottom of the pyramid (BOP) solutions in emerging countries and nothing but unemployment in industrialized countries Wonderful technologies. But are they green technologies? The goal of Eco-Design is to reduce the environmental impact of products by avoiding the transfer of impacts between different phases of a product s life cycle. It is therefore necessary to know what the impacts are, as well as the methods of assessment and improvement. MODULE INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES (ILOs): Upon completion of this course, students should be able to demonstrate that they have acquired the knowledge and skills to: Be able to transform an existing organization having an ISO structure into a structure which integrates environmental aspects - Identify environmental problems, their origins and consequences... - Evaluate environmental impacts using different methods (Using the different methods wisely) Propose areas of improvement, taking into account environmental concerns in the development of products.
