Have Your Say on the Safe Haven What is a Safe Haven? Where should it be? Godalming or Guildford? An alternative to A&E When experiencing a mental health crisis Provides support For people who are or could be developing a mental health crisis A relaxed environment To talk in confidence and share experiences Staffed by skilled mental health professionals From the Voluntary Sector & Statutory Services (Surrey & Borders Partnership NHS Foundation Trust) Offers peer support and information Helps people manage and prevent mental health crises Supporting people who are or could be developing a mental health crisis is both a national and local priority. People living in Guildford and Waverley have told us: If there was better out of hours support, then this would really help prevent a mental health crisis I d feel better supported if there was better out of hours support A safe haven café has been operating for just over a year in Aldershot with great results. We would like to repeat this success here. Take a look at this YouTube link to find out more about what they do.
What You Need to Know 194,306 has been awarded to try out a Safe Haven for people living in Guildford & Waverley. Working with Service Users, partner organisations have developed TWO options. We want to TEST OUT or PILOT one of these options. The chosen option will run for ONE YEAR. We will MONITOR how effective the chosen option is in meeting mental health crisis needs. These OUTCOMES will be reported to NHS Guildford & Waverley Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). The CCG can then make an INFORMED DECISION about future Safe Havens
WHO needs Support and WHERE do they Live? 5% people living in Guildford & Waverley i.e. 10,800 people have a long term mental health problem 10,800 people therefore require long term support Of these 10,800 people, 1,580 are registered with their GP practice as having schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or other psychoses This data can be shown as a bar chart (see below) detailing the names of the different practices (Ref: National General Practice Profiles, Public Health England, Percentage of all respondents to the question "Which, if any, of the following medical conditions do you have?" who answered "Long-term mental health problem". 18yrs+ Data source: GP Patient Survey Blue bar: Significantly different from England average Yellow bar: No significant difference from England average
The map below illustrates where the greatest numbers of patients with schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorder and other psychoses as recorded on practice disease registers (18yrs and over) are registered (the bigger the green triangle, the more people there are in this area).
What the Data tells us People with a mental health diagnosis are registered mainly with seven GP practices, most of them located in the north of the Guildford and Waverley CCG area. What would help to PREVENT a mental health crisis? What would help when EXPERIENCING a mental health crisis? This is what people in Guildford & Waverley told us A better crisis line Transport to the safe haven Community Connections services (The Welcome Project) to work extended hours covering the evening /weekends Access to a safe space in central Guildford, with human contact and reassurance Have satellite safe havens from a main safe haven in Guildford Have virtual support available, such as Skype access to staff at the safe haven At the safe haven, have buddying and peer support from other service users and carers Have an outreach model of working, to support those who would not go to a safe haven The safe haven should be staffed by mental health professionals: from the voluntary sector and from Surrey and Borders
What has the Working Group done? The working group, including two service users and a carer, has looked at all the evidence including: The numbers of people who might access a safe haven and where they live What people have told us they would benefit from if they are experiencing a mental health crisis The amount of money we have to test out the model of a safe haven Two options for how the Safe Haven could work in Guildford and Waverley have been proposed by this group. We now want your views on which would offer the best support for those requiring this service. These are explained on the next page, with a description of what the safe haven could look like and some of the pros and cons of each approach. Both options offer the SAME STAFFING for the Safe Haven. They differ in terms of the LOCATION of the Safe Haven Where else will Safe Havens be located? Aldershot Camberley Epsom Guildford or Godalming Redhill Woking
Option A Guildford Safe Haven open 7 evenings per week, 6-11pm Option B Godalming Safe Haven open 7 evenings per week, 6-11pm Staffed by Surrey and Borders Partnership (one staff member) and Welcome Project (two staff members) In addition, there will be a Safe Haven Link Worker The purpose of the link worker is to identify and engage with people who attend A&E with a mental health crisis on a frequent basis and to engage them when they are at home, in order to address the reasons that they are presenting at A&E so frequently. This would consist of a short period of intensive support to help people establish alternative ways to coping and link people in to existing services and supportive networks. This link worker would cover both Guildford and Waverley. Pros Cons Pros Cons The central Guildford safe haven is accessible by bus and train Further to travel for Waverley residents Godalming is a central venue for the whole of Guildford and Waverley Greater mental health need in Guildford so more people would be travelling to Godalming or Woking There are more people with mental health needs living in Guildford People in Guildford could access safe haven Godalming or safe haven Woking A potential safe haven location has been identified A potential safe haven location has been identified Next Steps Deadline for Options: 4 th December 2015 Aim to Go Live with the Safe Haven: Beginning of March 2016
