Agenda What is Hybrid AP Fat AP vs. Thin AP Benefits of ZyXEL Hybrid AP How Managed AP finds the Controller AP Web GUI
What is Hybrid AP? Hybrid AP, known as the Hybrid Wireless Access Point, is a ZyXEL proprietary wireless access point technology capable of making wireless AP to switch between different roles within Autonomous Architecture and Centralized Architecture. With Hybrid AP technology, one single wireless access point can act as a Stand Alone AP (Fat AP), a Thin AP (Managed AP) or even an Access Controller (AC).
ZyXEL Hybrid AP Triple-Mode Hybrid AP ZyXEL Hybrid AP technology is an All-In-One solution which offers 3 modes for users to choose from - Controller, Managed AP and Stand-Alone AP (e.g.nwa product series): Standalone AP (Fat AP) Managed AP (WTP) Access Controller (AC)
Fat AP vs. Thin AP Thick AP / Fat AP Each AP is a complete unit Operates and is managed individually Thin AP / Lightweight AP Centrally managed by a Access Controller
ZyXEL Hybrid AP FAT AP Solution: WLAN without Centralize Management THIN AP Solution: WLAN with Centralize Management Standalone AP (NWA-3163) Standalone AP (NWA-3163) Standalone AP (NWA-3160) Managed AP (NWA-3163) Managed AP (NWA-3163) Access Controller (NWA-3160) Ethernet Ethernet Standalone AP (NWA-3163) Standalone AP (NWA-3163) Managed AP (NWA-3163) Managed AP (NWA-3163)
Benefits of ZyXEL Hybrid AP
Benefit 1 Reduce Maintenance Manage multiple Access Points as easy as a single AP
Benefit 2 Costs Saving No need to build a costly centralized WLAN with standalone APs Provides multi-functionalities at the price of single access point It's flexible, allowing the user to set up another WLAN with any NWA-3160
Benefit 3 Enterprise Class Design Enterprise class design to build reliable and scalable Wi-Fi Network Scalable to adopt to different sized businesses All configuration is done thru secured tunnel Prevents risk of configuration being exposed or risk of AP being stolen
How Managed AP Finds the Controller AP
How Managed AP Finds the Controller AP An AP in managed AP mode joins a wired network (receives a dynamic IP address). The AP sends out a management request, looking for an AP in CAPWAP AP controller mode. AP controller on the network will receives the management request and reply the management response.
Flow Chart for Discovery Process Management Request Controller AP Managed AP Management Response
What is CAPWAP? LWAPP (RFC 5412) Known as Light-Weight Access Point Protocol Proposed by Airespace (Cisco) CAPWAP (RFC 4118) Known as Control and Provisioning of Wireless Access Points Refined by IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) CAPWAP is based on LWAPP
Terminology of CAPWAP AC Access Controller WTP Wireless Termination Point DTLS Datagram TLS Base on UDP Port: / 12223(Data) Authentication CA or PSK Encryption DES/AES
ZyXEL s CAPWAP Terminology AC AP Controller WTP UnManaged / Managed AP DTLS Datagram TLS Authentication : AutoPSK (Proprietary) Encryptions : AES-256 in CBC mode. Note: WTP Wireless Termination Point DTLS Datagram Transport Layer Security
ZyXEL s Framework WTP (Managed AP) WTP (Managed AP) AP Controller ( Access Controller) Ethernet WTP (Managed AP) WTP (Managed AP)
Web GUI
Web GUI Status For all WTPs For AC self All WTPs information
Controller AP Mode GUI Configuration Click MGNT MODE in the NWA s navigation menu to configure the NWA as an AP Controller.
Managed AP Settings Click MGNT MODE in the NWA s navigation menu to configure the NWA as a managed AP.
Registration Types in Controller AP AutoPSK (Proprietary) Transfer the PSK of DTLS from AC to WTP automatically. Manual UnManaged AP become an Managed AP by manual. Always Accept AC always accept all UnManaged AP become an Managed AP automatically.
Registration Types in Controller AP Manual Always Accept
Controller AP List
Backup Redundancy Mechanism The purpose of the redundancy service is to act during a failover condition. If you set your NWA as a primary AP controller, you can have a secondary AP controller to server as a backup. All configurations are synchronized between the primary and the secondary controller AP.
Controller - Primary Controller
Controller - Secondary Controller
Web GUI Radio Profile Configuration The same as Standalone AP.
Web GUI Profile Edit / Radio Profile
Web GUI - Rogue AP Rogue APs are wireless access points operating in a network s coverage area that are not under the control of the network s administrators, and can open up holes in a network s security.
Load Balancing
Web GUI-Load balancing
Wireless load balancing Wireless load balancing is the process whereby you limit the number of connections allowed on an wireless access point (AP) or you limit the amount of wireless traffic transmitted and received it.
Local balancing on NWA There are two kinds of load balancing available on the NWA: Load balancing by station number Load balancing by traffic level
Load Balancing by Traffic Level Example
Disassociating and Delaying Connections Delaying a Connection Kicking a Connection
DCS
Dynamic Channel Selection (DCS) Support The Dynamic Channel Selection (DCS) mechanism of Wireless technology Determines whether a new channel between the AP and STAs within a particular basic service set (BSS) is needed; Requests a channel signal quality measure to some of the plurality of stations by the AP; Delivers a channel signal quality report back to the AP based on a received signal strength indication (RSSI) and a packet error rate (PER) of all channels detected by the stations within the BSS; Selecting a new channel based on the channel quality report for use in communication between the AP and the plurality of stations.
