NOTICE LIPS Cloud and LIPS Desktop are software tools that work with LIPS hardware. By using LIPS Cloud and LIPS Desktop, you agree to be bound to the Terms of Service published on LIPS Local Indoor Positioning System is a radiofrequency communication device, functioning in the industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) radio band of 2.45 GHz, which means that the LIPS devices can be used worldwide. 7 1. Using LIPS Cloud Accessing LIPS Cloud LIPS Cloud is a web application that enables visualization of Tag positions (i.e. LIPS Devices) on the map in real-time on any web-enabled device (computer or phone). To log in to LIPS Cloud, open the address using your browser. FIGURE 1 Enter your address and password, and log in by clicking the LOGIN button. Note: you can also access LIPS Cloud using your cellphone or tablet. In this way, you can see real-time positions of your tags on any web-enabled device. Open your phone s browser and enter the address to access LIPS Cloud. FIGURE 2 Page 7

8 Adding tags In order to use LIPS Cloud, at least one tag device needs to be entered. You can add tags by opening the Tag Manager screen. When adding new (or editing existing) tags, you can name each tag and assign it a color (by clicking on the color icon). Tag addresses are assigned automatically (starting from 1). When you are done with entering tag data (name and color), click the SAVE button. FIGURE 3 Page 8

9 Visualizing tag locations in real-time Real-time tag locations can be seen on the RTLS screen. FIGURE 4 When a new location of the tag is detected, the map is automatically refreshed. You can see the date and time of the last refresh below the map itself (Last update: ). Note: tag locations are automatically refreshed when new data are received. Data are transferred automatically from LIPS Desktop (see Chapter 2) or from the APIs. Page 9

10 Mapping the local environment globally The absolute position of the local environment on the global map can be defined by pressing the SETUP button on the RTLS screen. FIGURE 5 You can define the environment width and height (in meters, using decimal numbers) and its rotation (in degrees, using decimal numbers). To properly place the local environment on the global map, simply drag and drop the pin that is shown in the corner of the local environment. When you are done, store the newly entered values by clicking the SAVE button. Page 10

11 2. Using LIPS Desktop Downloading and installing LIPS Desktop LIPS Desktop is a Microsoft Windows application that allows out-of-the-box use of LIPS Devices without any programming required and together with LIPS Cloud. LIPS Desktop can be downloaded from the first screen of LIPS Cloud (i.e. after logging in) by clicking on the DESKTOP DOWNLOAD button: FIGURE 6 After downloading the setup file, run the LIPS Desktop installer and follow the instructions on screen. Once installed, LIPS Desktop is placed next to the tray area: FIGURE 7 Page 11

12 Linking LIPS Desktop to LIPS Cloud In order to automatically transfer tag positions in real-time to LIPS Cloud, LIPS Desktop needs to be linked to your LIPS Cloud account. You can link the two applications together by providing Customer ID and API Key for your account. Both are provided at the end of Developer screen in LIPS Cloud. FIGURE 8 Note: the use of a Customer ID is similar to the use of a username, and the use of the API Key corresponds to the use of a password. Therefore, the API Key can be renewed (i.e. changed) by clicking the RENEW KEY button which invalidates the previous API Key and generates a new one. The Customer ID and API Key need to be entered in their corresponding input fields in the first (home) screen of LIPS Desktop (see Figure 7). Note: you can verify if the credentials were entered successfully by trying to open other LIPS Desktop screens (LIPS Devices, Tag Profiles, Firmware Update). It these screens are accessible without a warning, the Customer ID and API Key are valid. Page 12

13 Entering the list of active LIPS Devices In order for a Tag device to be able to calculate its position in the environment, the list of all active devices (including Anchors and Accesspoints) needs to be defined and, finally, programmed into the Tag itself. You can enter the list of active LIPS Devices by accesing the LIPS Devices screen in LIPS Desktop. FIGURE 9 Each device needs to be entered in its own row. Different device types require different parameters entered (unnecessary cells are automatically grayed-out): Anchors require coordinates of their position (in meters). Accesspoints require coordinates of their position (in meters). o o If the accesspoint is connected to a PC/server, it needs to be defined as an accesspoint-endpoint and the target parameter is not required. If the accesspoint is not connected to a PC/server, it needs to be defined as an accesspoint, and the target address of its endpoint needs to be entered. You can have multiple accesspoint forming a chain, but only one endpoint. Tags don t require any parameters entered. Page 13

14 Entering the list of active LIPS Devices (continued) Once the list (table) with active LIPS Devices is populated (see Figure 9), you are required to program every Tag and Accesspoint device with these data. Connect the Tag s or Accesspoint s USB to the computer where LIPS Desktop is running, and click the PROGRAM button on the LIPS Devices screen: FIGURE 10 For each device, select the currently connected device, its COM port and click the PROGRAM button. Log messages of this procedure will be displayed on the screen. After you have repeated this procedure for every active Tag and Accesspoint device in the system, you can close this window by pressing the CLOSE button (Figure 10). Note: you are not required to perform the programming procedure for Anchors. Page 14

15 Selecting the Tag profile The Tag calculates its own position using its own internal algorithms that take into account various configurable parameters. These parameters influence position calculations and, therefore, majorly affect the provided Tag position data. By default, the Tag already comes with a predefined set of values and you do not need to change these parameters if you do not find it necessary. You can, however, change these parameters and majorly influence on how the position is calculated. In the Tag profiles screen, you can either select one of the predefined profiles (e.g. Default profile, Fast profile, etc.) or enter your own custom parameters (which are, then, stored as your Custom Profile: FIGURE 11 Once all the desired parameters are correctly entered, you can send them to the Tag device by connecting it using its USB connection and, then, clicking the PROGRAM button. Any possible errors will be displayed on the Console screen. Note: a detailed explanation of the parameters in Tag Profiles is available in the LIPS Hardware Users Manual (doc.no. MRFUM01) accessible from LIPS webpage. Page 15

16 Firmware Update All LIPS Devices have upgradeable firmware. A firmware upgrade may be released by MULTILUX in case of adding new features or patching possible detected faults. New firmware updates are released through LIPS Desktop and are automatically received when available. You will be notified of a new update with an orange exclamation mark overlaid over the Firmware Update menu button in LIPS Desktop: FIGURE 12 You can, then, download the firmware update by clicking the DOWNLOAD button on the Firmware Update screen. Once the firmware is downloaded, you can use it to flash your LIPS Devices by connecting each device using its USB connection and clicking the FLASH button. Any possible errors will be shown in the Console screen. FIGURE 13 Note: normally, firmware updates only apply to Tags and Accesspoints. Hence, you will probably not be required to dismount all the anchors from your environment. Instead, you will probably only need to connect Tags and Accesspoints to your PC. Page 16

17 Console Output For diagnostic purposes, all relevant data are output to the Console screen. Possible errors (e.g. LIPS Cloud communication, flashing, etc.) are also shown in the console. Receiving Tag positions and running in the background FIGURE 14 Once the LIPS system is properly configured, open the home screen of LIPS Desktop, select the COM port of the connected Accesspoint, and click RUN. Tag position data will be automatically received by the software and sent to LIPS Cloud. In order for position data to be continuously sent to LIPS Cloud, LIPS Desktop needs to remain open and running. Therefore, when clicking the EXIT (X) button, LIPS Desktop is minimized to tray, but still keeps sending data to LIPS Cloud. Note: to quit LIPS Desktop, right click the tray icon and select EXIT.
