Review Meeting Agenda Agenda reviewed. Nurse s Week Celebration luncheon at this meeting. Agenda Accepted with minor revision: add Nomination of chair and director as item #15 and move Closed Session: One Petition to 2. Review Faculty Minutes from April 13, Guest: Nancy Meggelin Review of minutes deferred. Nancy Meggelin discussed the role of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at MTSAC. Previously, policies on campus regarding the use of students as research subjects were decided by various committees on campus. Now, the IRB has been formalized and approved by the Board of Directors, and is currently comprised of: Faculty, management, a research scientist and a non-mtsac staff member who is generally from another academic institution. The IRB is actively informing the campus, item #16. Minutes deferred. 1
2 via each department of the approval process to implement research on campus and the criteria involved. The mission of the IRB is: 1) To protect the mission of MTSAC 2) To protect students and 3) To ensure that IRB approval is obtained on campus when criteria is met. Examples of different research modalities were provided, i.e., If Mount. St. Mary s institutes research of BSN students at MTSAC, Mount. St, Mary s would utilize their university s IRB, however, if the research involved MTSAC students, Mount. St. Mary s would need to obtain MTSAC IRB approval. If nursing faculty in the nursing department assessed students in terms of applying this research to improve a course, IRB approval would not be necessary. Additionally, if an individual was using MTSAC students in research for a graduate course, MTSAC IRB approval is required. 4A. Student Report Nancy Meggelin is stepping down as the director of the HCRC at the end of the Spring, 2015 semester to return to teaching, Student present: Andrew Hollis, 1 st year, reported that there were no issues in first semester. Will continue to encourage students to attend Faculty meetings. 4B. Faculty Introduction Virginia Vy, pediatric adjunct faculty, was introduced. 2
3 5. Director Report Dr. Chen advised faculty of the following: 1. The Azusa Pacific University (APU) RN to BSN recruiter would like permission to come to the department and promote APU s RN to BSN program, to MTSAC nursing students. 2. Mount St. Mary s, Memo of Understanding (MOU) has been signed by Dr. Scroggins and is now awaiting Board of Trustee s approval, which is expected on May 27, Dr. Chen will formally announce the Mount St. Mary s BSN collaboration, upon Board of Trustees approval. 3. Elsevier rep, Tom Thornton and his supervisor are requesting to bring lunch to the faculty and present a new Elsevier product at the June 1 st Admissions Committee Meeting. 4. The Adjunct Faculty Workshop is scheduled for Friday, May, 15 th, in 67A-150. To date, 20 faculty (full time and adjunct) have RSVP d to attend. Adjunct faculty will be paid to attend. 5. Any BRN approved assistant director who is interested in becoming director; contact Dr. Chen to obtain her required signature on the BRN documentation. APU is not invited to the department at this time. Elsevier is not invited to the Admission s Committee meeting or any department meeting, at this time.. 3
4 6. Department Chair Report 7. Committee Report- Admissions 8. Committee Report - Curriculum Sarah Plesetz advised faculty of the following: 1. Book Orders have arrived from the campus Book Store; please review, sign and return the form to Sarah Plesetz. 2. All Fall, 2015 nursing courses will be held in 67A. 3. from the latest Division Meeting was reported at the Faculty Meeting on April 13 th. The Fall 2015 Cohort has been selected: 1. The top 121 applicants were referred to counseling applicants ultimately met criteria students are in the Fall 2015 cohort with an additional 37 alternates. The N70 Orientation was held on April 29 th. 25 students RSVP d and 19 students attended the orientation. 1 student is requesting a special circumstance excuse for not attending the orientation, if the request is approved, 20 students will be seated for N70 this summer. New Student Orientation is scheduled June 15 th -18 th in 67A 205/215. SBAR and Head to Toe Assessment have been differed to the next scheduled Curriculum Committee meeting. An ATI vendor will present the nursing Curriculum Management and Articulation Program (C-MAP) web-based program at the next scheduled Curriculum Committee meeting.. Faculty, please bring your course SBAR and Head to Toe Assessment to the next Curriculum Committee meeting. 4
5 The use of calculators for dosage calculation exams throughout the curriculum will be on the agenda for the next scheduled Curriculum Committee meeting. 9. Committee Report Program Evaluation The Program Evaluation Committee recommends no longer utilizing any standardized testing throughout the curriculum. Faculty consensus obtained. Starting, Fall 2015, the second, third and fourth semesters will finish utilizing the Kaplan exams. Each cohort will still have complimentary Kaplan NCLEX review courses offered following 4 th semester, until the use of standardized testing is exhausted in the program. Fourth semester facility evaluations are currently obtained from students in N8, N10 and N11, however in several CRNs, students are at the same facility for all three courses. Proposal to allow CRNs with students who attend the same facility for N8, N10 and N11 to use one facility evaluation, and the agency evaluation of the program will be done only in N10. All fourth semester will continue to evaluate all other aspects of the program. Faculty consensus obtained. Faculty consensus obtained. To clarify, Critical Elements/Student Evaluations can be performed either, on campus or at the facility. Adjunct faculty will make the decision to evaluative students with Faculty consensus obtained. the Critical Elements, either on campus or at the facility, in collaboration with the lead faculty for the course. 10. Academic Senate Billie Lynes and Jamie Hooper attended the last Academic Senate 5
6 Report Meeting. Faculty are encouraged to see available Academic Senate Committee positions, per the sent via Academic Senate. Currently, Academic Senate is proposing that senators vote on a proposition that would have each division request for 2 faculty to assist on the Education design Committee. 11. Faculty Association. Michelle Boyer and Oscar Romero attended the last Faculty Association meeting. Oscar scans notes and handouts from the meetings and forwards them to faculty, see . This is Faculty Appreciation Week on Campus. 12. CNSA New Officer applications are currently being accepted. CNSA has been very busy on campus, promoting Puttin on the Hits and hosting a table at the Health Occupations Career Fair on May 1 st, CNSA is also hosting a clothing drive for the homeless who access the ED at PVHMC and SACH.. See Academic Senate attachment to the filed minutes in the department.. Continue to encourage adjunct faculty to join Faculty Association Pinning Ceremony Committee. The Pinning Ceremony will be Saturday, June 13 th at 5pm in the stadium. Rehearsal will be at 2pm. At this ceremony, 1 family member or faculty member selected by the student will pin the student. A new printing company in Chino is currently printing the invitations and programs. Starting Fall 2015, with approval from faculty, each student will be pinned by faculty who are selected by the cohort. Save the Date will be sent out at the start of N8, beginning Fall Faculty consensus obtained.. 6
7 14. Share : Flipped Classroom 15. Chair and Director Nominations. 16. Closed Session: One Petition 2015 and invitations will be sent two months prior to the ceremony. Per Sarah Plesetz, an informative power point, presented at the COADN meeting on the concepts of a flipped classroom was e- mailed to faculty. Students prepare prior to class and present on SBAR, for example. Lance Wilcher gave the example of N8 students reading ahead of N8 and preparing for the course pretest, with excellent results. Riverside City College cited examples of their success with the flipped classroom, at COADN.. Any faculty interested in the HCRC Director position, see the from the division.
