4 GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE NJROTC PROGRAM The NJROTC program goals are to provide an opportunity for secondary school students to learn about the basic elements and requirements for national security and their personal obligations as American citizens to contribute toward national security. The NJROTC has the following basic objectives: a. Promote patriotism. b. Develop informed and responsible citizens. c. Promote habits of orderliness and precision, and develop respect for constituted authority. d. Develop a high degree of personal honor, self-reliance, individual discipline, and leadership. e. Promote an understanding of the basic elements and requirements for national security. f. Develop respect for and an understanding of the need for constituted authority in a democratic society. g. Develop an interest in the military service as a possible career. ii

5 PREFACE This document was prepared for submission to the NJROTC Curriculum Development Committee for approval. The curriculum outline lists course lesson topics and associated learning objectives, both unit and lesson topics, in their sequential order. Criterion reference tests will be used to measure cadet achievement. The standard for all cognitive objectives will be set by each senior naval science instructor (SNSI) based on local guidelines. Task analysis for the Introduction was accomplished by the Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) staff, Pensacola, Florida, under the guidance of the Naval Service Training Command (NSTC), using the Jury of Expert method and questionnaires. Appropriate modifications will be left to the discretion of SNSIs. iii

7 SECTION A CURRICULUM FRAMEWORK Naval Science 1 The Introduction A. Major concepts/content. The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the precepts of citizenship, the elements of leadership, and the value of scholarship in attaining life goals. This course is also designed to engender a sound appreciation for the heritage and traditions of America, with recognition that the role of sea power will be important in America's future, and develop in each cadet a growing sense of pride in his/her organization, associates, and self. These elements are pursued at a fundamental level. The content should include, but not be limited to the following: - an introduction to the NJROTC program, its missions, goals and objectives - benefits of Career Planning - instruction in naval leadership and followership traits and principles - citizenship and responsibilities of citizens and the basis of our government and its role in today s society - the mission, and organization of the Navy in maintaining freedom of the seas - wellness, fitness, and first aid - geography and survival skills B. Intended outcomes. After successfully completing this course, the student will: 1. Know the Navy Junior ROTC organization and the requirements for success in the Navy Junior ROTC program. 2. Exhibit an understanding of how to think about a career and one s life goals. 3. Exhibit an understanding of basic naval leadership and followership traits and principles, and be afforded the opportunity to apply those traits and principles in practical work. 4. Understand the role we have as American citizens and the role of government in our society. 5. Understand the organization of the Navy. 6. Understand the importance of developing a personal exercise program and the benefits of such a program. 7. Be knowledgeable of the basic principles and tools of map reading and land navigation. 8. Demonstrate confidence and proficiency in basic individual, squad, and company close order drill. C. Special note. The eighth intended outcome is not an academic component of the NJROTC curriculum similar to the previous seven intended outcomes. Demonstrating basic individual, squad, and company close-order drill is a laboratory activity consisting of 72 hours of drill, commands, and ceremonies, rotation of command, physical fitness training, regular personnel inspections, and parade in company review. 9 SECTION B COURSE OBJECTIVES UNIT TITLE: 1.0 NJROTC and YOUR FUTURE UNIT OBJECTIVE: 1.0 The cadets will be expected to learn about the NJROTC s history, mission, curriculum, and the benefits of belonging to the program. They will also learn about the difference between a job and a career and how to start planning now for their future. 10 B-1 UNIT TITLE: 2.0 LEADERSHIP SKILLS UNIT OBJECTIVE: 2.0 Developing leadership in cadets is one of the primary goals of NJROTC. This unit will arm you with knowledge you need to become an effective leader. You will learn how good leaders come from ranks of good followers, the styles and traits of good leaders, how to motivate others, and the attitudes and emotions that make for the best leadership. LESSON TOPIC: 2.1 Followership ALLOTTED SESSIONS: LESSON TOPIC OBJECTIVES: Explain the importance of good followership Describe the readiness factors of followers Explain how to build productive relationships with leaders Describe how to be an effective follower. LESSON TOPIC: 2.2 Leadership ALLOTTED SESSIONS: 6 LESSON TOPIC OBJECTIVES: Discuss the two orientations to leadership behavior Define the four leadership styles Identify the primary factors of the leadership situation List the six traits of an effective leader Describe the personal qualities of an effective leader Describe the leadership opportunities in NJROTC. UNIT TITLE: 3.0 CITIZENSHIP and AMERICAN GOVERNMENT UNIT OBJECTIVE: 3.0 Promoting good citizenship is another goal of the NJROTC program. To help you become a better citizen, this unit will teach you the rights and responsibilities of an American citizen as well as the foundations of your government. You will also learn how the defense of our nation relates to citizenship and how the military functions in our democracy. LESSON TOPIC: 3.1 Citizenship and Responsibility

UNIT TITLE: 4.0 The US NAVY UNIT OBJECTIVE: 4.0 In this unit, you will learn the types, designations, and missions of Navy ships and aircraft. You will also learn Navy shipboard terminology, customs, and courtesies. The unit also includes the origins and development of Naval aviation. LESSON TOPIC: 4.1 Navy Ships ALLOTTED SESSIONS: 6 LESSON TOPIC OBJECTIVES: Explain the mission of Navy ships.

LESSON TOPIC: 5.1 Choosing the Right Exercise Program for You ALLOTTED SESSIONS: 6 LESSON TOPIC OBJECTIVES: Classify exercises as aerobic, anaerobic, isometric, and isotonic Compare the benefits of aerobic, anaerobic, isometric, and isotonic exercise Identify the benefits of regular exercise Determine the essential components of a good exercise program LESSON TOPIC: 5.2 Evaluating Your Physical Fitness ALLOTTED SESSIONS: 6 LESSON TOPIC OBJECTIVES: Explain why stretching is important to building healthy skills Describe the proper techniques for the three basic physical fitness exercises evaluated in NJROTC Describe the Presidential Physical Fitness Award Identify the events in the Presidential Physical Fitness Award LESSON TOPIC: 5.3 You Are What You Eat
