BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE SQL POWER SUPERVISION SUITE COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE OFF-THE-SHELF (COTS) SOFTWARE XBRL Forms: Thin-Client Data Collection & Validation Facility The number one roadblock to successful XBRL Adoption is the need for filers to retool their back-end systems to generate XBRL filings that are compatible with their Regulators evolving Taxonomy(s). Regulatory organizations that have mandated XBRL in their jurisdiction without providing an XBRL Data Collection/Conversion facility have significantly burdened their filers, resulting in lower compliance and resistance to the XBRL mandate. XBRL Forms removes the financial and technological burden from the filers and provides them with an easy-to-use, web-based front end for users to verify financial information prior to submission. With the taxonomy identified, the XBRL Forms application dynamically renders a set of taxonomy-driven returns and schedules to facilitate the data capture of high-quality financial information. XBRL Forms validates each filing in real time against the taxonomy and certifies the return, generating the required XBRL instance document. XBRL Forms also allows regulatory organization the flexibility to change their Data collection requirements, validation rules and reporting frequency, in very short order - without the need to provide filers with a significant lead-time for retooling. With XBRL Forms, Regulators move beyond compliance by effectively removing the burden and complexity of generating XBRL filings from the filing organization, thus enabling immediate adoption of the new filing standard. Enterprise Data Detailed Warehouse Functionality Zero-Footprint Software XBRL Forms provides a Zero-Footprint thin-client facility for data entry of financial information. This means zero software downloads are required - which translates into maximum compliance and maximum adoption. Zero-Footprint offers the highest levels of automated filing to Regulators and their regulated subscriber entities: a subscriber simply logs in via the internet and submits its business information or corporate financial filings via a secure, intuitive submission form dynamically rendered by from the required XBRL taxonomy. Other Systems Work in Progress Import Save & Load Validation & Certification Web based (Java) Integrates with XBRL Power EAS: User access control Reporting management Enablement of resubmissions View past filings Create new filings Import and output/download XBRL Instance Documents Print (pdf) Instance Documents XBRL Taxonomy Metadata drives: Data Domain Validation Online Help Admin Guide Validation (formulas) Interactive Final Calculations Multilingual XBRL Forms Validation Submission Taxonomy XBRL Filed Data Returns and schedules are automatically rendered based on information embedded in the taxonomy. Accurate submissions are ensured through extensive real-time validation as well as final certification. Interactive Validation Interactive validation occurs on a field by field basis: as the user enters data, they are alerted to fatal errors or warnings defined within the taxonomy. Final Certification Final certification occurs when the user is ready to submit or output the filing: all rules in the taxonomy are processed and a validation screen presents details on any and all fatal errors or warnings. Fatal errors will prevent a filing from being submitted, warnings will not. Validation errors and warnings can be extended in the taxonomy to virtually cover an infinite number of business rules through the use of XBRL Formulas. Features Ensures accuracy - interactive real-time validation against the taxonomy, triggering all required Design / Build / Assessment / Expansion Case StudIES calculations, formulas, and rules Easily deployed on all standard browsers, integrates tightly with the supervision Suite portal Stores works in progress for future revisions Allows for final Validation/Certification of returns prior to submission Generates XBRL Instance Documents for submission Imports XBRL instance documents for viewing, modification and re-submission Provides full Multilingual support THE FINANCIAL REPORTING AUTHORITY
CASE STUDY: EDW Design & Build SQL Power provided a complete Enterprise Data Warehouse solution to this client in a phased approach that delivered value in just 6 months. Client Type Pharmaceutical Project Type Enterprise Data Warehouse Design/Build Timeline March November 2002 Technologies Used Unix Red Brick Oracle SQL Power Loader SQL Power DQguru Cognos Impromptu and PowerPlay Client Profile The client is a large International Pharmaceutical company. Over the past 2 decades, the company has evolved to become a leader in providing pharmaceutical and diagnostic solutions for the treatment and management of acute and long-term diseases. Client Challenges The client s recent growth and need to further increase its market-share in Canada has compelled its Sales and Marketing Groups to sponsor the design and development of an Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW). This EDW is intended to capture all relevant operational, CRM, Sales, Contact Management, as well as 3rd party IMS (market-share) data and serve as command control for all future Sales, Marketing and Campaign Management initiatives. THE FINANCIAL REPORTING AUTHORITY
This EDW needed to deliver the following: 1. A short term ROI, fully justifying all the upfront Hardware, Software and RDBMS investment within the first 6 months. 2. A fully robust and scalable Data Architecture to facilitate the phased rollout of the complete EDW solution over the next 3 years. 3. A complete 360-degree view of every customer, product and employee. Solution Delivered Through a series of interviews and JAD sessions with executives, power users and IT staff, and indepth analysis of source data, SQL Power proceeded to deliver the following to our client: An EDW Strategic Plan outlining the high-level EDW business requirements, a Conceptual Data Model, Technical Architecture, assessment of source data availability, end-user BI readiness assessment and a road-map for the phased rollout of the various EDW subject areas over the next 3 years. Design, development, testing and production rollout of Phase 1 (CRM, Product and Sales data) of the EDW including the integration of all Customer and Product key dimensions, and the rollout of an ad-hoc reporting environment for the power users. Design, development, testing and production rollout of Phase 2 including Inventory, IMS, and Compusearch demographic data as well as the rollout of all required Cubes and standard reports to the Sales Force. Design, development, testing and production rollout of Phase 3 including full contact management, Sales Territory alignment and Doctor-level-data, allowing the client to drive all Campaign Management and Marketing initiatives through the now fully-populated EDW. All ETL processes were built using the SQL Power Loader ETL tool, and all key dimensions were consolidated, cleansed and de-duped using the SQL Power DQguru data cleansing tool - providing a single consolidated view of every hospital, pharmacy, doctor, product and employee. Solution Benefits The client was able to obtain all the anticipated data access benefits of building an Enterprise Data Warehouse, with executives and business users able to answer key business questions in seconds/ minutes (instead of days/weeks as was the case prior to building the EDW.) This allowed them to easily monitor the success of their various Sales and Marketing initiatives.
CASE STUDY: EDW Assessment SQL Power performed an in-depth health check on this client s Enterprise Data Warehouse and provided actionable recommendations which were implemented effectively. Client Type Office Supplies Project Type Enterprise Data Warehouse Assessment Timeline January - March 2007 Technologies Used Windows SQL Server T-SQL ETL scripts Cognos Impromptu Client Profile The client is a large Canadian office supplies chain. In recent years, the company has been focusing on aiding businesses by selling products such as office supplies, office furniture, meeting supplies and computer supplies. Client Challenges The client s current Enterprise Data Warehouse has been in operation since early In the months leading up to SQL Power s involvement, the EDW had been experiencing performance issues resulting in nightly jobs taking increasingly longer to complete. THE FINANCIAL REPORTING AUTHORITY
Through interviews with the EDW staff, analysis of database trace logs, and review of the ETL processes, SQL Power discovered some of the root causes of the performance issues, which were: 1. Contention with other application databases residing on the EDW server. Namely, the Surf Control application is competing heavily with the EDW application for system resources. 2. The size of the Product Dimension makes the existing change data capture technique for handling the slowly changing dimension attributes inefficient. 3. Long-running end user queries are interfering with the daily load of the Data Warehouse. Solution Delivered SQL Power representatives conducted several meetings with the client s key personnel. Through interviews, analysis of Extract-Transform-Load (ETL) processes, database servers and database trace logs, a number of findings were uncovered. Several recommendations were outlined in detail to the client s IT Management to help alleviate the EDW performance issues. Summary of the SQL Power recommendations 1. Isolate the DW environment on its own server so that there is no contention for resources from OLTP applications/databases. 2. One of the biggest performance culprits was the 3 million row Product Master file data load routine which took over 4 hours to load/update each night. SQL Power recommended the implementation of a delta generation routine which identified that less than 50,000 products changed each night and isolated the update routine to include only the changed records - shaving hours off the nightly data load process. 3. Introduce query governors, database replication, and summary tables to reduce the impact of end user queries on the DW load window. Solution Benefits At the end of this project, the client improved their nightly load processes and were able to refresh their EDW in a timely fashion well in advance of the start of their business day.
CASE STUDY: EDW Expansion SQL Power provided a range of resources to help this long-term customer with an agressive expansion of their Enterprise Data Warehouse. Client Type Telecommunications Project Type Enterprise Data Warehouse Expansion Timeline March May 2005 Technologies Used Unix Oracle Informatica Power Centre ETL Cognos Client Profile The client is one of Canada s top telecom service providers. They provides wireline voice services to more than 4.2 million customers and Internet access to about 1.2 million. The company s wireless unit serves about 6.2 million mobile phone customers nationwide with voice, data, and mobile Internet services. They offer high-definition TV, video-on-demand and pay-per-view television, and personal video recorder (PVR) services. They also provide businesses with consulting, network management, and other IT services. Client Challenges The client had built an Enterprise Data Warehouse in 2000 after its acquisition of a smaller telecom provider. This orginal EDW built met the priorities of the organization (customer acquisition, revenue, phone usage, and customer churn) but did not incorporate all sources of data within the organziation limiting their ability to fully exploit the EDW and BI investment. In 2004 the client wanted to close this gap. This was a significant investment more then doubling the size of the EDW in terms of data sources. This project had and aggressive timeline requiring that the team be expanded three-fold working on different streams of development concurrently. THE FINANCIAL REPORTING AUTHORITY
Solution Delivered SQL Power has been involved with this client since 1997 and until the present. During the major expansion phase of the EDW from , SQL Power resources provided leadership and assistance in the following ways: 1. Review the current state and identify risks/gaps in moving forward with the expansion plan. 2. Plan out the strategy for the EDW expansion including risk mitigation. 3. Establish standards to solve gaps identified following best practices in the following areas: 1. Data Architecture 2. ETL Processes with Informatica 3. Data Warehouse Operations 4. Provided resources (17 at peak) in the following areas for the execution of the expansion work: 1. Program Management 2. Project Management 3. Data Architecture 4. Business Analysis 5. Systems Analysis 6. ETL (Informatica) 7. Business Intelligence (Cognos) Solution Benefits At the end of this project, the client had fully built out their EDW to inlcude all significant sources of data for the wireless phone business. This allowed them to move forward and execute a broader range of reporting and analytics solutions to support the business at reduced marginal costs.
