Reporting and Data Warehousing Case Studies
The Delivery s Group (DSG) was established as a centralized group in TA2000 for process related management. Its mission is to support, produce and evaluate ideas, metrics, tools and culture for process and product innovation across the DST TA2000 group. The DSG provides services to the associates and delivers solutions that will expedite the project lifecycle and improve project quality. DSG TA2000 Cognos Reporting is a system used to capture all the business process related information across TA2000. It provides enterprise level metrics, tools, and reports which are used by top level management and managers. Single-source of information. Consistent information to improve data analysis across various systems. Secure and role-based authorization for reports. Robust and powerful management information system. The Delivery s Group Inability to generate Reports Different systems use different databases. Clarity uses Oracle, Magic uses SQL Server, LotusNotes employees proprietary data management, and LDAP Servers require yet another mechanism. As a consequence, generating reports involving different systems and subsystems is difficult. Data storage The online transaction processing (OLTP) contains data for a limited period of time, so the data is volatile. Aggregation and decision making through reports Due to the volatile nature of the data, generating metrics and reports for historical data using OLTP is not possible. Cognos Framework and Reports development: Although a data warehouse is available, procurement of licences to slice and dice data and have a 3D view for Management Information System (MIS) reporting is very expensive. To address this, DSG and suggested a solution using Cognos designer, requiring few licenses to build reports. Once these reports are developed, they are deployed on to the intranet allowing access to the end users. The powerful reporting features of Cognos also provide the role based security access model for the MIS reporting environment. Reporting Warehouse A reporting data warehouse for generating reports has served reporting, data analysis, and decision making requirements. The Extract Transform Load (ETL) process loads data from various OLTP databases (Oracle, SQL Server, LotusNotes etc.) to the reporting warehouse periodically. The reporting warehouse is then used by Cognos Business Intelligence tools to develop the reports. As a long term plan, the reporting warehouse will be enhanced to serve all the reporting purposes which will be much faster and will provide better features for data analysis and mining. Cognos to Microsoft Business Intelligence Migration As Microsoft Business Intelligence (MSBI) is the preferred DST Worldwide Services reporting tool, all the reports have been migrated to MSBI. The reporting data source is through a common data warehouse cube All rights reserved
Fund companies need an analytical business tool to understand the dynamics of shareholder behavior. The data analytics tool needs to provide an innovative, efficient and flexible framework for analyzing the fund data available through TA2000. This service will enable investment companies to get an investment management perspective at multiple levels to make an informed decision about fund offerings. DST s TA2000 group was requested by one of its clients to provide a Proof of Concept (POC) prototype that would measure the retention of assets by broker-dealer, fund, share class or asset type using transaction history data. Consistent information to improve data analysis and to monitor trends. Low-cost, user-friendly, and accessible reporting system. Persistency of Assets Tool Inability to Generate Reports Develop a process to measure the retention of shares purchased in a given fund as a percentage and weighted by the ratio of those shares in comparison to other shares within the fund. Aggregation and Decision Making through Reports The process to measure the retention of share or asset class will be further enhanced by including the weight of assets purchased in one fund in relation to the sum of all assets purchased in the share or asset class. Provide reports of the persistency measured to the user through a web-based front end application. Build a Reporting Warehouse Building a reporting data warehouse for generating reports will serve reporting, data analysis and decision making requirements. The Extract Transform Load (ETL) process loads incremental data from the online transaction processing (OLTP) database to a work database. This process is scheduled to run each night to avoid load on the OLTP database. Data is cleansed from the work database creating a stage database. The data is then transformed and loaded to the production database. The reporting solution sits on top of the data warehouse to generate reports. Reporting Application: A reporting solution is provided by the widely used Jaspersoft reporting tool. A web-based, front-end application is provided to the user for viewing the reports and printing. The team was tasked with determining the appropriate technology to be used to satisfy the requirements for the project. The team suggested DataStage as the ETL, DB2 as the database, and Jaspersoft as the reporting tool. After successful completion of the Proof of Concept (POC), DST Worldwide Services is moving forward with the development phase which is scheduled for completion in Q All rights reserved
SalesConnect is a part of Distribution Support Services through DST s TA2000 group. SalesConnect provides high-quality sales information to the clients sales force. SalesConnect provides fund companies and Real Estate Investment Trust (REIT) sponsors with an end-to-end solution for tracking and servicing financial advisers across their transfer agent and sales organizations. More than 50 asset managers rely on the data scrubbing service to provide daily profile updates, and to reconcile trades and asset positions from multiple record-keeping sources including TA2000 and subaccounting platforms. The data scrubbing service can be delivered within a DST-hosted web application featuring Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and reporting capabilities, or as daily data files that are integrated into a clients own downstream sales systems SalesConnect Since inception, SalesConnect s focus has been to provide asset managers with business critical information about financial intermediaries, including reconciling their trades and asset positions. This key task, often under-served in the industry today, improves the accuracy of sales information that fuels downstream reporting and decision making. SalesConnect handles the day-to-day processing of Firm, Office, and Representative updates, maintenance, trades and asset resolution, as well as client-specific data scrubbing. delivered timely, accurate, and comprehensive reporting information increasing the effectiveness of clients existing sales reporting More than 75 standard reports were developed, and each report contains parameters that enabled clients to customize the results based on their specific needs. Flexibility for clients means that reports can be scheduled and ed in either PDF or Excel formats. The software solution chosen for development of reports was Crystal Designer 2008 and the database is Universal database (UDB) DB2. provided numerous solutions by proactively suggesting and implementing graphical and pictorial representations on the reports and changing the layouts for a better look and feel. Single source of information for sales analysis and decision making. Flexibility to export reports in various formats and schedule and the reports in a timely manner. Secure and user-friendly online reporting system All rights reserved
A large rental and leasing service corporation with more than 400,000 customer accounts nationwide with numerous distribution centres across the United States. The client uses multiple applications such as Route Accounting System (RAS), WearGuard, Oracle Applications, Dun and Bradstreet, and Customer Satisfaction Survey. Moreover the RAS application, a major application in the U.S. market, is not centralized. Single source of information to improve data analysis. User-friendly, accessible reporting system. Ability to access historical and present data. Centralized invoicing for customers. Centralized Data Warehousing Standalone Systems - RAS Our client had 110 Market Centres (MC) using an application called RAS for their operational needs. RAS is a standalone application that produces one database for each instance, so 110 MCs created 110 individual databases. Due to this lack of cohesion, generating high level reports through data aggregation was extremely challenging. Multiple Applications In addition to RAS, our client utilized multiple independent applications for their business needs. Data sharing and consolidation was a cumbersome process which delayed the data reflection in other applications. Building a data warehouse served our client s enterprise level reporting and analysis needs. This data warehouse has 46 files that load on a daily basis coming from multiple sources; offering a single source for their reporting needs. All the load files from different market centers move daily from their respective market center to a file server using extraction and transfer processes. The business files are then consolidated into a single market center. For example, customer files coming from almost 110 market centers merge into one customer load file. This helps simplify the load process and maintenance. The 46 consolidated files are then moved to a shared data store using an Extract Transform Load tool developed using T-SQL. This data is pushed to a user work area before moving into staging and production. The volume of data being manipulated and stored is more than a gigabyte every day. Several data-marts were developed, enabling faster access and security for various departments, such as central billing, electronic data interchange (EDI) and the web application development team. The business intelligence tool Proclarity was selected for analysis and slice and dice reports, along with a self-serve reporting tool developed for canned reports All rights reserved
HealthCare Integration Platform (HIP) is an add-on product which can be used to seamlessly adapt to a constantly changing regulatory environment concerning electronic data interchange. HIP facilitates integration with the electronic data interchange (EDI) layer that accepts inbound data from customers and their partners to translate and store a simplified, product-neutral and business-friendly format and vice versa for outbound data. In the short term, HIP addresses an immediate need for a couple of payer systems facilitating HIPAA 5010 compliance and minimizing the amount of data needed to send and receive. In the long term, this neutral format is expected to become DST Health s standard for all file-based integration with all the payers which they offer. Ensures regulatory compliance Reduction in overall costs with a high ROI Allows for greater information access Enables strategic alignment in market place Helps to create a positive customer experience. HealthCare Integration Platform Existing products maintenance DST Health s enhances and updates their flag ship products periodically based on the health insurance regulatory changes from the U.S. government. Most of the enhancements are repetitive and require a large effort across its product offerings. Performance and resources utilization Electronic data interchange (EDI) is the only layer that currently interfaces with the customer and their partner. EDI s role is to make sure the data is cleansed before formatting to product specific requirements. While EDI does the cleansing and formatting, it does not leverage the resources extensively as it passes data to the product groups. was involved in the estimation, design, development and testing of the HealthCare Integration Platform (HIP), a framework of innovative technology, tying together the complex components found in healthcare payer environments. HIP is a complete integration approach, involving a collection of processes and methodologies that facilitate integration between the various applications. HIP provides a data repository of inbound and outbound transactions, enabling data elements not accepted into the core products to be accessed either for research purposes, or to be forwarded on to outbound transactions. This integrated solution addresses an overall need for a central integration platform for all DST Health s legacy systems. DataStage is our preferred Extract Transform Load tool for a sound integration with the supporting copybook layouts and transaction files. By providing state of the art architecture while designing the DataStage jobs, there is less effort required in the development and jobs are more easily maintained. This provides better integration of new customer onto the HIP platform. In addition, our preferred solution contains a web-query portal providing real-time information and status to customers All rights reserved
Background The concept of the Consumer Directed Health Plan (CDHP) is to return control of health care dollars to the consumer. The consumer is given a financial incentive to control costs, and as a result tends to become more directly involved in the selection and usage of health care services. CDHP has provided private branding features to all clients to enable customized websites based on their unique needs, with the help of content management features. Benefits Provides a flexible way to design the look of a page, as well as provide consistency across pages with the use of presentation and authoring templates Allows greater flexibility and creativity for the preview of content to help users with the look and feel of their web pages Segregates different elements of a web site into separate items for more effective management Allows contents to be changed without changing code, avoiding time delays and costs for a deployment process. Business and end users both can create and modify and publish content to a single repository. Content Management Approach for CDHP CDHP was implemented for several clients, each with their own private branding requirement. Each client offers various health plans (e.g. HRA, FSA and HAS) to their customers. When their customers access CDHP features, they expect a seamless visual brand experience including consistent content such as logo, styling, footer, disclaimer, and terms of use. The required product needed to have a robust solution that consistently displays customized content throughout the application. Our solution was expected to be simple, and easy to implement and maintain. It also needed to be capable of rendering hierarchal content (e.g. when a user subscribed group has customized content, if the user logs in, they should see group level content). Business users were provided with a Graphical User Interface (GUI) to upload files for use as content on the web site. Client specific content for multiple clients is maintained in separate folders, while common content for all clients is maintained in a common folder. When a user logs into the CDHP application, it looks for the client specific content and renders the page using that content. If a clients specific content is not found then content available in the common folder is used. The same logic has been employed to implement hierarchical content management for groups within each client. Using these features, business users can change the content and look and feel of their web page on the fly, without any need for code redeployment. These Content Management features have been implemented in CDHP for more than three years, and have been used by clients successfully to manage their private branding requirements. The technology used by to create and maintain the content management features of CDHP is a combination of HTML and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) All rights reserved
