3 Library Programs and Services 2 Pedagogical Library Located in Room 301 of the Administration Building, the Pedagogical Library is an information and training center for teachers, administrators, and other staff of the School District. Established in 1883, it is the oldest library of its kind in the nation, with a collection focusing on elementary and secondary education. Professional periodicals are available in print or online, and ERIC documents are available on microfiche and online. The library also houses an archival collection concerning the history of the School District. Phone: Services for School Libraries More information on the following services is available online at this address: Access Pennsylvania Library Database Program More than 50 of our school libraries are members of this program, which provides a statewide union catalog to facilitate interlibrary loan (see page 6). Alexandria Library Automation System The School District has chosen Alexandria as the recommended library automation system for our schools. A variety of specialized documents and training are provided to assist schools in establishing this system. Documents for school libraries The Library Programs office prepares a variety of specialized documents for our school libraries including a regular newsletter, a Directory of School Libraries, an operations and procedures handbook, and ordering instructions for library materials and automation systems. Library Power Library Power is an initiative designed to place school libraries at the heart of educational reform and higher student achievement. It focuses on changing the way teaching and learning happen in schools using the library as a foundation. POWER Library Online Database Program The POWER Library program (Pennsylvania Online World of Electronic Resources) is funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The program provides many of our school libraries with free access to a variety of online databases. Professional development, technology training, and library consultation Workshops, technology training, and other professional development opportun- ities are provided for school library staff. Library consultation services are also available. Stories for Children with School Librarians Philadelphia school librarians host a monthly television program on the School District of Philadelphia Network (SDPN) that features authors, storytellers, and illustrators for children in grades 1 to 6.
4 3 Facts and Figures about Our School Libraries Beginning on page 17, this Directory includes listings for 266 schools. Although most schools have a central library available to students, approximately 25 schools currently have no library services or have only classroom libraries. School Library Staff The School District of Philadelphia has 42 standard senior high schools, 37 of which are staffed by appointed or apprentice librarians. Of the District s 46 middle schools, 19 are staffed by librarians. Of 176 elementary schools, 36 are staffed by librarians. Schools without librarians have libraries staffed by a variety of full and part-time employees including teachers, Library Instructional Materials Assistants (LIMAs), Supportive Services Assistants, and others. A significant number of volunteers also help provide library staffing. A total of 213 School District employees appear in this Directory as full or part-time staff of our school libraries. These include 87 appointed librarians, 2 apprentice librarians, 4 teacher/librarians, 30 Library Instructional Materials Assistants (LIMAs), 33 teachers, 41 Supportive Service Assistants, and 20 persons in other classifications. 8 7 Library Automation Systems Each year, an increasing number of our school libraries obtain computerized circulation and catalog systems. Listed below are 89 schools that currently have these systems in operation or development. In 1999, a team of School District librarians and Information Technology staff reviewed and evaluated library automation systems designed for school libraries. The Alexandria system was selected as the most suitable system for our schools. The selection was based on several criteria including cross-platform capability, system features, cost, ease of use, and networking technology. More information about the Alexandria system is available from the Library Programs and Services office, School Automation System Librarian Alcorn School--MYA Annex Allen (Ethel) School AMY at James Martin School Audenried High School Baldi Middle School Bartram High School Beeber Middle School Bethune School Bodine High School Brown (H.A.)
