THSP develops practical insights and proven solutions that can be scaled in schools and districts throughout Texas based on our evidence and data analysis across the transition from middle school (8-9) through high school (9-12) and into postsecondary programs (four-year, two-year and technical programs)

5 Why STEM Education? Improving Mathematics and Science achievement among all Texas students Increasing the number of students who study and enter Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) careers Supported 46 T-STEM Academies (surpassing THSP goal of 35) in areas of high need across Texas, each year producing 3,500 Texas high school graduates from diverse backgrounds Launched Dec Created 7 T-STEM Centers (surpassing THSP goal of 5) across the state that will facilitate the transformation of teaching methods, teacher preparation and instruction in STEM fields Coordinated an extensive T-STEM Network to promote broad dissemination and adoption of promising practices

12 T-STEM Results TAKS scores in 9 th Grade Math at Academies are 10% to 15% higher than district Teachers report positive results for student growth in achievement T-STEM 10th graders scored 49 points higher on TAKS math T-STEM Academies have higher attendance rates than their peer schools at both the campus and 9 th Grade levels, as well as schools across the state (97.2%) T-STEM Academies serve a more diverse student population than the state average

13 T-STEM Academies: Lessons Learned Because there is a focus on at-risk students, there must be a support structure (academic, social and emotional) in place for students. District engagement and buy-in are critical to success. Support for teachers for improving/changing instruction is key to create a truly STEM school. Having model schools and a blueprint are essential for successful implementation with fidelity. Community engagement and buy-in are key to sustaining the academies after the grant funding ends.

16 T-STEM ( ) Utilize T-STEM Academies as learning labs to train other Math and Science teachers in the district and at other non-t-stem schools Use the blueprint to create a designation process so districts without funding can implement T-STEM schools with fidelity to a proven model Connect T-STEM schools and centers with regional economic development efforts Use the academies and centers to train preservice teachers in STEM instruction Implement district-wide reform of math and science instruction through district-wide T- STEM or expansion to feeder middle schools.
