1 BRIERCREST SEMINARY EXPERIENTIAL INTEGRATION SYLLABUS MA LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT RD 700 MA Experiential Integration Revised June, 2011
2 Preamble: Given the wide diversity of settings, roles, and possible applications to leadership and management, and given the capacity of blossoming leaders to shape a beneficial proposal for fulfilling their Experiential Integration requirement, this set of expectations will be brief, foundational, flexible, and principle centered. The primary goals, expectations, and guiding principles are set out as follows. I. GOALS/PRIORITIES OF EXPERIENTIAL INTEGARTION 1. Students will be expected to engage in experimenting with and applying their more theoretical learning and prior assumptions in a setting that accommodates a deepened understanding of how to live out best leadership practices. 2. Students will be expected to engage in such experiential application and learning in a context or setting where they gain significant 360 degree and integrated feedback on their character, competencies, chemistry, and courage demonstrated in the real life setting they serve. 3. Student will be expected to provide a set of self-assessment instruments and results compared to the 360 degree assessment outcomes as a significant part of the Oral Comprehensive Examination (OCE) process that will follow their experiential learning journey. 4. Students will be expected to have a supervisor who invests a minimum of 10 hours in coaching conversations and who is willing to provide an integrated 360 degree assessment summary. 5. Students will be expected to come away from the experience with a dependable self-understanding regarding their demonstration of character, competencies, chemistry, and courage with data to support their understanding. 6. Students will be expected to have the capacity to provide a data based and decisive summary of observations, commendations, suggestions and recommendations regarding their future of service that grows out of the full experiential journey. II. EXPECTATIONS OF EXPERIENTIAL INTEGRATION EDUCATION 1. Students will provide a proposal (contract) of approximately two pages in length in which they delineate where they will do the experiential integration, what they will do, when they will gain the experience, how they will gain the experience and the required supervision and feedback, who will act as supervisor, evaluator and final assessor of experience. While the timelines are somewhat flexible the EI conversations should be in process and approved by October of the school year they intend to graduate and the process should be completed by mid-march and before the Oral Comprehensive Exam (OCE) of that year. 2. Students will invest a minimum of 250 hours of contextually beneficial, observed and evaluated service. 3. Students will write a concluding 7-10 page personal reflection paper that focuses on what was learned, what course learning they applied
3 and how that benefitted their experience, what they felt ill-prepared for and how they account for this, an updated version of their philosophy of leadership (including biblical/theological, historical and functional dimensions) and a personal life learning and growth plan that flows out of their experience. It is highly likely that the student will have access to a template from classes taken to date but if not feel free to request such from the MA Leadership/Management program coordinator. 4. Students will provide an integrated 360 degree evaluation summary and will compare that to their own self report at the time of their oral comprehensive exam (OCE) at the end of the program. 5. Students will also be expected to submit a report from their immediate supervisor in which that supervisor provides a written two page report that includes their observations, commendations, suggestions and recommendations for the student involved given what he/she has observed of this student during the EI journey. III. IV. GUIDING PRINCIPLES FOR EXPERIENTIAL INTEGRATION 1. Please remember that you may have had a good deal of life experience and service before enrolling in the MA Leadership/Management program or before taking this non-credit course. What is different about this from a typical experience is that this is an attempt to integrate/implement what you have learned in a very reflective, intentional and self-conscious way. 2. Please also be aware that this experience could be a very useful way to gain a deepened sense of personal, spiritual, vocational, emotional, and functional direction of an immediate or longer term nature. 3. Please also be aware that we are deliberate about providing a readily applied and open set of expectations because we believe you are most qualified to determine with which you most need to experiment. 4. Please also understand that you should track the program with the MA Leadership/Management program coordinator to ensure that you are making good choices to fulfill your Experiential Integration requirement, and certainly by the time you reach 30 credit hours into your program.
