Does acceptance into Butler University guarantee acceptance into the PA Program? No, a specific application for admission into the PA Program (professional phase) is required of all persons who wish to be considered for acceptance into the PA program. This is true even for those students enrolled in the pre-pa curriculum at Butler University. 2. When and where do I apply for admission to the professional phase? All applicants applying for the professional phase of the PA program will submit completed applications (i.e. a completed application with all required supporting documentation such as transcripts, letters of reference, etc. included) to the Central Application Service for Physician Assistants (CASPA) at by December 1 in the year preceding the fall semester of anticipated professional phase enrollment. However, earlier application (by Oct. 15) is encouraged. 3. Are applications for the professional phase of the PA Program accepted for the fall and spring semesters? Applications for the professional phase of the program are accepted only for the fall semester. 4. What is considered in the admission process for the professional phase? A total of up to 90 points will be awarded in the following categories: Three-legged PA race Hooding Ceremony Overall GPA (cumulative) Interview* up to 40 points up to 25 points * Applicants undergo a ranking process by the PA program based on GPA and those most highly ranked will be invited to interview. All eligible (with "eligible" defined as those with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher at the time of application) Butler students* are ranked according to the process above, but applications from transfer students will first be sorted according to degree status and number of outstanding prerequisites
5 before they are ranked by the above process. After the interview, all applicants are re-ranked and those students presenting the best overall qualifications will be offered admission into the PA professional phase. As noted above, in general, decisions related to professional phase admission are made on the basis of the sum of the points earned for each of the categories evaluated during the admission process. However, applicants shall be deemed ineligible for admission in the event they receive a score of zero in any category evaluated by the interview. Technical Standards All students must be capable of meeting these requirements to be eligible for program admission. The Technical Standards can be found in the Butler University Bulletin. 5. What is the academic profile from previous applicant pools? The average cumulative GPA for those invited into the professional phase is approximately 3.5 on a 4-point scale. 6. What can I do during the preprofessional phase to increase my chances of being accepted into the professional phase? Work hard academically to maximize your cumulative GPA. Get health care experience! Shadow at least one Physician Assistant If you are a Butler student, join the Physician Assistant Club (PAC). Consider joining the AAPA (American Academy of Physician Assistants) as an affiliate member and/or your state organization. These memberships will provide you with publications and other benefits, which will help you keep abreast of current issues in the profession. The American Academy of Physician Assistants can be contacted at (703) or via its website, for further information. 7. Can course work taken at other colleges and universities be applied towards the preprofessional requirements of the first and second years? Credit for applicable courses in which grades of C- or higher were earned may be applied towards PA Program preprofessional requirements. For an official review of transfer credits, students must apply to Butler University and have all transcripts audited for course equivalency. No course equivalencies will be accepted for professional phase courses taught at institutions other than Butler. 8. Is it advisable to work while going to school? Current students strongly recommend that you not work if at all possible. Some students work during the third year, but they often have to greatly reduce their work hours. The PA Program is demanding and leaves very little time for outside commitments. It is almost impossible to work during the 12 months of clinical rotations which are full-time assignments and which sometimes include evening and weekend responsibilities. 9. Who teaches the Physician Assistant Program? The program is taught by a combination of physician assistants, physicians and pharmacists. 10. What are rotations and where are they conducted? Clinical rotations provide an opportunity for "experiential learning." Rotations are conducted in hospitals, clinics, emergency rooms, private medical offices, etc. During these periods students are assigned to work with supervising physicians, PAs and/or other healthcare providers as appropriate to apply the concepts they have learned throughout their classroom training to benefit the patients for which they provide care. 11. What does it mean to have "successfully completed" a course and how does this relate to graduation requirements? The definition of the phrase "successfully completed" varies with the type of course. For non-pe, preprofessional courses, the phrase "successfully completed" is applied to those courses in which a grade of C- or better is earned. For CC1P, the phrase is applied to those courses in which a grade of P is earned. For professional courses a grade of C or better must be earned before the phrase is applied. All courses (or their equivalents) must be successfully completed to meet requirements for graduation.
6 12. Are there any requirements regarding when certain courses must be completed? Beyond the standard university requirements regarding prerequisites, etc., the PA program requires: All pre-professional math/science courses be successfully completed prior to advancement into the professional phase and that no more than two math/science courses remain to be successfully completed by the conclusion of the spring semester prior to advancement into the professional phase. No more than 7 courses with non-ap course designators may remain to be successfully completed by the conclusion of the spring semester prior to advancement into the professional phase.
