9 PA HISTORY In the mid 1960 s physicians and educators recognized a shortage of primary care providers in the US Dr Eugene Stead of Duke University Medical Center initiated the first PA program with ex-military corpsmen The first class graduated on October 1, 1967 Today there are approximately 80,000 practicing PA s in the US and over 145 PA programs

13 Certification Graduate from an accredited PA Program Pass the National Certification exam and re-test every 6 years Maintain 100 hours of continuing medical education (CME) every 2 years. Follow licensing rules in the state in which the PA practices
14 Who are we? Wingate University s Harris Department of Physician Assistant Studies graduated its inaugural class in We are small, focused program with a diverse student population. Students have ranged in age from and they have come to us from all over the US and from as far away as Germany and Iran. Each faculty and staff member is committed to knowing and interacting with each of our students. We are accredited by the ARC-PA.
15 Where are we? Our main campus is located in Wingate NC approximately 30 miles east of Charlotte. Clinical rotations for students are primarily in the Charlotte area but are also located in a variety of suburban and rural locations nearby

20 Educational Format 27 months, 7 semester, year-round curriculum leading to a Master of Physician Assistant Studies (MPAS) degree Based on the Medical School Model Intensive didactic education along with development of skills, followed by supervised clinical practice Curriculum divided into didactic component for the first 3 semesters and clinical for the last 4 semesters Graduates must pass the PA National Certification Examination (PANCE) at the end of their education
