Biology Explorervision John Lenzini and Jason Gorecki The Amazing Cell Phone History of the cell phone- The very first concept of the cellular phone started with AT&T car phone around When Motorola engineers began researching cellular technology, they soon recognized its potential. But their vision went far beyond car-based phone technology. 1 When they parked their car and leave, they couldn t use their mobile phone. stated Martin Cooper Who was one of the leaders in early cellular development at Motorola. So they wanted to create a mobile device that you can carry with you anywhere. Motorola was the main competitor against AT&T. The company's idea was a big one. It would involve not only creating a portable wireless phone, but also building the system and structure to support it. The Motorola team would have to prove to the FCC that a cellular system compatible with portable phones would work. They did not have much time. Creating the first wireless portable cell phone in the world was an enormous challenge. But they succeeded. Motorola Born as the Galvin Manufacturing Corporation in Chicago in 1928, the company was a radio communications pioneer. The company produced its
first Motorola-branded car radio in But Martin Cooper then created the first cellular phone in 1973, at his lab in New York city. He was able to do so because he first used Motorola s two way radio technology. He then came up with a larger modem that had the power to wirelessly connect with the telephone towers. But the phone was moderately heavy set at 2 pounds. Present phone technology It relies on a radio signal in order to transmit and receive voice and data information. Previously, the radio device can only receive a signal from a commercial station making it a one way communication device. However, by integrating the principles behind Bell s telephone, the simple radio became a communication device which can also serve as a small transmitter thus giving it the capability to become a mobile phone. When you dial a particular number, the base station will automatically identify that number and assign an encrypted code on its transmission. Therefore, when the stations send out transmissions, it will only be transmitted to the shortest possible relays that will connect to the exact number you have dialed. 2 The term cellular phone is derived from the cell principle of radio transmission. Each base station provides a single cell or radio signal span radius. Combining all of these
signals in a location makes it appear as cellular compartments. Therefore, when you change your location, you go out of a single cell and enter a new one. With each change in locality, the base station nearest to you will provide you a signal. In some cases, you may arrive at a location when no signal from any base stations is present; called a dead spot. First to make a cell phone they design a concept. Cell-phone companies employ a team of designers to create a concept for their latest phone release. Add and define features during the design phase. Features normally seen on a cell phone include the ability to make voice calls and send text messages. Then figure out what parts to use. Finally put the cell-phone parts together at an assembly line. An assembly line consists of a row of multiple assembling machines to house the cell phones while they are being built. Before packaging the product they test the cell phones in the QA. (Quality Assurance) If they find any problems, they will send the phone back for correction. The materials of a cell phone are a case, display screen, Printed Wiring Board (The green boards, including all the chips and other electronic components mounted on them.), a keypad, microphone and speaker, antenna, battery, and an adapter.
Future cell phone technology One of the future of cell phones is a phone that is powered by kinetic energy and can fold into a wallet. Shape memory allows the phone s keys to pop up when in use and blend in with the surface during downtime. When it s folded up it is used for simple calls and texting. But when you unfold it you get a widescreen for watching videos. But the real great thing about it is the more you use it the more it charges by using kinetic energy. Another important future phone is one that sends out waves of electricity as
beets of information. Letting blind people the ability to us the phone. These phones are better because they solve the problem of energy and who can use the phones. Breakthroughs For a phone to have the ability to morph we first have to make the phone be made with nanotechnology. Nanotechnology will make the phone be flexible, stretchable, transparent, remarkably strong and have the ability to morph. Nanotechnology is just like spider silk in how flexible it is and how you can
barely see it. It doesn t exist yet because no one has put the time and the billions of dollars needed to actually create it. There are a lot of technology breakthroughs needed to make the futuristic phone that is made for the use of the blind. The main technology needed is Electronic pulses through piezoelectrical material. We have used this technology before for radios and cars but never something so small. To actually use it in phones we have to make the materials for the Electronic pulses through piezoelectrical material be able to fit into the small body of a phone. We then have to also lower the energy used to power it or we would only be able to use it when its plugged in and charging. 1 The first device that people made using this technology was in world war 1, the sonar. It was made by Paul Langevin it emits an electronic echo that lets you tell how far from an object you are from how long it takes to hear an echo. Consequences Even though cell phones provide a great service to people, they do have negative effects. These negative effects are often seen in teens and have really conquered teenage culture. Most schools have ban the use of cell phones during school hours, but students continue to use them under the noses of the teachers. Even though some students do get caught, some do get away with it and is becoming a growing problem in schools today.
Another problem with cell phones is that people use them when driving and can cause car crashes which can lead to serious injury or death. This has cause many states to also ban the use of phones while driving. Most phones that teenagers have do have cameras and there s a problem with teens taking nude pictures of themselves and sending them to other people.
