1 An evaluation of GIS for the predictive modelling and mapping of specific stream power, substratum particle size and potential juvenile lamprey habitat Brian Beckett (Inland Fisheries Ireland) and Dr. Sally Cook (Supervisor, University of Ulster, Coleraine) Geospatial data sources: o OPW 500m node PCD, indicative flow values 1:2 year (median flow), 'densified' (25m scale) o EPA stream network 100m scale node slope data o IFI wetted width database ArcGIS Geodatabase ArcGIS Model Build Lamprey presence/absence corresponds with modelled 80 W/m 2 threshold (Fig 4). Optimal lamprey habitat potential corresponds with modelled D 50 <16mm (Fig 5). Future monitoring and designation of SACs could utilise data from this exercise. Models could support quantification of habitat used by other freshwater species. Models could support flood control / alleviation and erosion studies.
2 Implementation of the Water Framework Directive Resolving Engineering and Hydromorphological River Restoration Difficulties Matthew Hemsworth, Seb Bentley and Dr George Heritage Physical constraints and infrastructure The objectives of the WFD require the restoration of river process as well as river form. Hydromorphology, brings together the knowledge of river hydrology, hydraulics and geomorphology which are all essential for sustainable river design management and naturalisation. Sediment Wide scale landuse Flow Recreation Ecological Interaction Local urban environment Regulation The solution Process Based Approach. We need to be mindful of not just local processes and impacts, but those at a larger catchment scale. Essential to facilitate long term WFD compliance for impacted waterbodies. It is necessary to treat the river and floodplain as a single functional unit and to recognise the role of natural processes in causing change to the system.

4 Innovative Workflows for Large-Scale River Channel Surveying National Catchment Flood Risk Assessment and Management (CFRAM) Cameron Hughes, Hydrographic Survey Manager, Murphy Surveys GLOBAL CONSULTING SURVEYORS The Programme The Office of Public Works (OPW) is currently undertaking the CFRAM programme, which is central to a long-term strategy for the reduction and management of flood risk in Ireland. The programme delivers on the core components of the national flood policy and the EU Floods Directive. The programme consists of three phases: A river channel survey equivalent in length to the distance between Dublin and Canada STATS (Eight contracts: 1, 2, 3, 5, HA 10, Boyne Area, Western SC2, North West Neagh Bann) Preliminary flood risk assessment (2011) CFRAM studies production of flood maps and flood plans ( ) Implementation and review (2016 onwards) River sections: 37,306 Open sections: 19,500 Extended gauge sections: 1,100 Bridges: 1,800 Culverts: 1,500 Weirs: 600 Others: 2,300 Control Points: 260 Drawings: 5,500 Photos: 260,000 People: 100 Data: 500 Gb Duration: Aug Apr 2013 The largest survey of its kind in Europe 54,000 km2 area 4,190 km in length Safety: Approx 25,000 hours near water and no serious incidents Happy Landowners: Successful Murphy Surveys was selected as one of the... companies to undertake surveying for CFRAM, and has completed eight contracts. The project covers an area of almost 54,000 km2. WORKFLOW liaison with landowners and third parties Consistent Data: 60 survey teams Efficient Delivery: Short timeline Survey Data Collection Project Management GIS Management Data Processing Cross and long sections (x, y, z spatial coordinates) on river channels & banks Structures (bridges, weirs, sluices) Flood Defences (walls, embankments) Photo and videos GIS data Data was collected and tracked in the field and remotely loaded onto the secure cloud. This method of data transfer enabled almost real-time survey processing. Developed Scripts for QA Created Crew Data Packs Managed Geo-tagged Data - Photos - Notes Project Management tool Having reviewed the limiting capabilities of existing software, we designed and developed a bespoke software add-on for 3D Civil, with streamlined data processing & scripts for QA. Data could be sent to the field crews through the cloud, directly to their loggers in the field. Kildare Cork Belfast Glasgow London
