1 Chapter 6 Appendix: Sources of Secondary Data For almost any marketing research project, an analysis of available secondary information is a useful and inexpensive first step. Although there are information gaps, particularly for detailed market information, the situation on data availability and reliability is improving. The principal agencies that collect and publish information useful in international business are presented here, with some notations regarding selected publications. A. Important Canadian Websites 1. Industry Canada a department of the federal government, developed Strategis in 1996 to meet the needs of its information users. The site provides information of Industry Canada s programmes and policies, and links users to the vast network of departments, agencies, working groups, and databases within the Canadian federal government as well as other governments, multinational institutions, and private organizations across the globe. For the international business student Strategis offers a one-stop shopping option for those seeking international business information. Industry Canada is the main contact with online information about the country, economy, trade, and other societal elements. For access to Industry Canada s domestics and international trade data relevant to the international marketer see: Trade Data Online, Canadian Company Capabilities, Federal Corporations Data Online, and Canadian Industry Statistics. Each of the aforementioned facilities can be reached through the Strategis site. 2. Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade: publishers reports on Canada s macro-economic developments that deal with foreign affairs, and foreign trade and investment. The department also conducts empirical research by country and region, prepares assessments of multilateral trade negotiation items, and publishes research that is disseminated to the public. 3. Export Development Corporation (EDC) is a Canadian financial institution devoted exclusively to providing trade finance services to support Canadian exporters and investors in some 200 markets, 130 of which are in developing markets. 4. Canadian International Trade Tribunal ( investigates injury to domestic companies in antidumping and countervailing duty cases. 5. International Trade Canada ( provides information on Canada s international trade and investment policy and supports Canadian exports through the International Trade Commissioner s Service. 6. Canadian Commercial Corporation: offers services for both Canadian exporters and buyers outside of Canada. It offers a range of pre-contract, contract advisory and post-contract services. CCC also assists Canadian companies promote Canadian business projects, negotiate contracts, and implement start-up efforts after a contract is awarded. They also provide access to working capital and foreign exchange at competitive rates. 7. Canada Revenue Agency administers Canada s federal tax laws and for most provinces and territories. The Agency also manages several benefit and incentive programs across the country. 8. Canada Border Services Agency was created in 2003 and represents Canada s response to public safety and national preparedness. Besides its role in protecting Canada s national security interests the agency is in charge of customs and duties on products entering and leaving the country. 9. Canadian International Development Agency is Canada s international aid agency. It works with the business community, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), professional associations, co-operatives, educational institutions and international agencies. Developing countries are also essential partners. 10. Competition Bureau is Canada s regulatory unit that enforces legislation dealing with preserving a competitive market environment. It is responsible for administration and enforcement of the Competition Act, the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Act, the Textile Labelling Act and the Precious Metals Marking Act. Its role is to promote and maintain fair competition so that Canadians can benefit from lower prices, product choice and quality services. 11. Competition Tribunal is a specialized court that hears and decides applications that deal with the Competition Act. The Tribunal operates independently of

Statistics Canada is Canada s agency in charge of compiling, analyzing, and reporting Canadian information vital to business, government, and educational users across the globe. 13. Bank of Canada is the nation s central bank and is responsible for maintaining the integrity of the monetary system. B. Other Useful Websites 1. STAT-USA, a part of the U.S. Department of Commerce s Economics and Statistics Administration, produces and distributes at a nominal subscription fee the most extensive government-sponsored business, economic, and trade information databases in the world today, including the National Trade Data Bank, Economic Bulletin Board, and Global Business Procurement Opportunities The website of the Commerce Department s International Trade Administration provides export assistance, including information about trade events, trade statistics, tariffs and taxes, marketing research, and so forth Provides import and export information on more than 18,000 commodities, but the user must subscribe The U.S. Census Bureau provides a variety of international trade statistics Find the CIA World Factbook here, as well as other pertinent trade information The U.S. Customs Service provides information regarding customs procedures and regulations The Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) provides information regarding its services The Export-Import Bank of the United States (Ex-Im Bank) provides information related to trade financing services provided by the U.S. government The International Monetary Fund (IMF) provides information about the IMF and international banking and finance The World Trade Organization (WTO) provides information regarding its operations The Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) provides information regarding OECD policies and associated data for 29 member countries The Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) is the best source for data on the Japanese market Euromonitor is a company providing a variety of data and reports on international trade and marketing The Web of Culture provides a variety of data on cultural dimensions such as language, gestures, and religion for a large number of countries. 15. University-based websites. Notable sites connected to several data sources include the Michigan State University Center for International Business Education and Research (global edge.msu.edu/ibrd/ibrd.asp) and the University of California at Berkeley ( BUSI/bbg18.html) The World Network of Chambers of Commerce and Industry provides data and addresses regarding chambers of commerce around the world The Internet Public Library provides Internet addresses for dozens of sources of trade data worldwide.
