This close-knit community is compact in size, measuring a total of approximately five square kilometres. The downtown commercial core of Manitouwadge is only one block away from the shores of beautiful Manitouwadge. How to Get Here Manitouwadge is located in the centre of Onatrio, and lies half way between Thunder Bay and Sault Ste. Marie. Nestled on the shores of Manitouwadge, north of Superior, it is situated at the end of Highway 614 approximately 50 km north of the Trans Canada Highway 17. International travel can be accommodated at Thunder Bay International Airport, and various Canadian flights can be scheduled at the Sault Ste. Marie Airport. Manitouwadge also operates a registered Municipal airport facility (IATA designation YMG ) which is open 24 hours and is available for various government agencies and for chartered or private flights. Over 50 years ago, three prospectors shook hands and sealed a partnership which led to the first mining operations in the community. Manitouwadge was built by Noranda (now a part of Xstrata) to support the company s Geco copper mine, and in the early 1980 s gold was discovered at Hemlo, 50 km south of the community. Noranda later acquired the mining rights to a significant portion of the land in that area, and built the Golden Giant Mine which offered housing to many of its employees in Manitouwadge. Today, Manitouwadge continues to be a friendly community, where dedicated individuals carry on the efforts of the early pioneers and where a handshake seals a friendship, just as it did for the founding prospectors many years ago.
