2 Social Media Mining Health and Safety AJ Boulay Masters in Computational Sciences at Laurentian University with a specialization in Human-Computer Interfaces, especially in Occupational Health and Safety. I have been a member of the United Steelworkers Union, and have worked in industrial jobs where there are hazards similar to the kinds found in Mining.

3 Social Media Mining Health and Safety My work: How Persuasive Social Media can be applied in Mining Health and Safety. Specifically: How the interface between technology and people such as operators can be developed to decrease Mining accidents, improve training, and develop a culture of health and safety among Miners.

4 Social Media Mining Health and Safety Why do this research? Four reasons: 1. Wietzman et al. (2011) claim that there has not been enough research evidence produced in the area of behavioral change and Health and Safety Social Media. 2. They also recommend the development of a gold standard that may be used to evaluate the quality of Social Media regarding Health and Safety to protect the User.

5 Social Media Mining Health and Safety 3. There is a general need for research in the area of Human Factors/Ergonomics for Mining (Simpson et al. 2009). 4. Situational Awareness (SA) has gained a great deal of recent attention in the scientific world (Simpson et al 2009) and Persuasive technologies can be used to develop SA and obtain research data.

6 Persuasive Technology in Mining Health and Safety We all know some common examples of Persuasive Technologies such as Facebook, Twitter and You Tube. We have entered an era of persuasive technology, of interactive computing systems designed to change people s attitudes and behaviors. (Fogg, 2003) HCI and the study of recurrent trends in attitude and behavior change Fogg calls them Principles Why is this important to us? Mining Health and Safety is very much about changing the attitudes and behaviors of Miners to reduce error.

11 SMS Technology According to the recent literature: The most important contribution from the ergonomics/human factors specialists is the provision of more and wider information that is specifically tailored to mining and which is presented in a designer friendly format. (Simpson et al. p.35)

12 SMS Technology Simpson, Horberry and Joy (2009) claim that... one aspect of human error that has received a great deal of recent attention in the scientific world is lack of Situational Awareness, (SA). SA helps operators or teams gain a better sense of the situation they are in and understand how information, events and their own actions can impact task completion now and in the future. Here is a good example of Situational Awareness:

(2009) errors can occur at each of these levels of influence which can predispose the critical active failure (operator error) which creates an accident. According to Simpson et al. (2009) identifying the level of influence where the error has occurred is important for two reasons: 1. The nature of the error mitigation methods will change with each level. 2. Ultimately, it is poor Safety Culture that must be treated through intervention.

17 SMS Technology RF systems shown to be better at tracking and logistics than Barcode Technology. By increasing supply chain efficiency, cost can be reduced and profit increased. This is a win-win approach for many companies: SMS technologies mean both Mining Health and Safety and Supply Chain processes can be improved, reducing human error, increasing both safety and profit.

18 Persuasive Technologies in Mining Health and Safety The 3D Virtual Mining Lab was invented and developed by Dr. Ratvinder Grewal, founder and director of the Human-Computer Interaction Research group and Matthew Hunter, a Masters student, like me. We developed a 3D Virtual Reality Mining visualization system that has been adopted by such Mining companies such as Gold Corp.

21 Persuasive Technologies in Mining Health and Safety The science of studying Persuasive Technologies is called Captology and it is not restricted to Social Media technologies: it may also include other technologies such as video games designed for Mining Health and Safety or 3D Virtual Reality Mine Design Interfaces.

22 Importantly, Centola (2010) claims that public health interventions aimed at the spread of new health behaviors may do better to target clustered networks rather than the casual contact networks across which disease may spread very quickly particularly if the behaviors to be diffused are highly complex (for instance, because they are costly, difficult, or contravene existing norms). (Centola, 2010). Human Networks

24 Human Networks and Persuasive Technology Principle of Social Facilitation People are more likely to perform a well-learned target behavior if they know they are being observed via computing technology, or if they can discern via technology that others are performing the behavior along with them.

26 Social Media in Mining Health and Safety An example of a site that applies Persuasive Methodology This is the area of research that I am developing for Mining Health and Safety, it is an area that will develop interventions at all of Simpson et al. s Levels of Influence and allow corporations to make more money with regard to supply chain management.
