1 6 Simple Steps to Applying for Direct Loans at UBC For undergraduate students Thinking about applying for US funding while studying at UBC? The next few slides will help guide you through the basic application steps for the Direct Loan undergraduate funding program through the US Department of Education. At UBC, Direct Loans can consist of Stafford loans as well as Parent Plus loans.

2 1 FAFSA Application Your first step is to complete your FAFSA application at fafsa.gov. You ll need a number of things to fill out the application including, but not limited to: Your Social Security Number (SSN) Your parents SSN if you are a dependent student (unmarried and not turning 24 this academic year and unmarried) Your driver s license number, if you have one Federal tax information Get a complete list of steps at studentaid. ed.gov/fafsa/filling-out. Mac Users: Do not use Preview to complete this form. Troubleshooting: Ensure that you are using the most recent version of Adobe Reader. Download it at 2. Save the completed copy to your computer. 3. Send it as an attachment to [email protected] Important: In accordance with US Department of Education regulations, if you wish to receive Direct Lend funding, NO part of your UBC credential can be earned through Distance Education or Online Learning. Because UBC is a foreign school we aren t notified when you complete your FAFSA, so this form gives us the information we need about your application, including how much funding you re applying for and the length of your program of study. 4 3 Master Promissory Note (MPN) Go to studentloans.gov to complete your Master Promissory Note (MPN) and entrance counselling. You ll have to complete a new MPN for each loan you receive. For example: If you re getting a Stafford loan and a Parent Plus Loan for the September April school year, both you and your parents will need to complete two MPNs: One for Stafford loans and one for Plus loans. If you decide to go to school in the summer, you and your parents will need to fill out two additional new MPNs for the May August summer session. 5 4 Parent Plus funding If you want to apply for Parent Plus funding, your parents must go to studentloans.gov to request: A PLUS loan A credit check Plus Entrance Counselling We will your parent(s) the Agreement to Release Funds form once your loan eligibility is determined. The Agreement to Release Funds allows us to apply the Plus loan directly to your student account. Without it, we ll have to mail your parent(s) a cheque.

6 5 Stay in touch with us Log into the Student Service Centre (SSC) and make sure your address, phone number, and are up-to-date. This way you won t miss any important communications about your funding at UBC. We communicate primarily through this is how you ll get your loan assessment letter. We ll also let you know next steps or if you re missing anything for your application through , so it s important to add [email protected] to your safe senders list.

7 6 Dates and timelines Winter Session (September April) We start processing US loan applications on July 1, when most students have registered for their September classes - but you can always submit your documentation ahead of time. We recommend that you submit and complete everything by July 31 to have your loan funding in time for classes. Summer Session (May August) We recommend that you have everything completed and submitted to us by March 31.
