The Role of Literacy in Math and Science Instruction Day 1 funded by: Tennessee Higher Education Commission Kay Cowan, Ph.D. Chattanooga Chattanooga 1

General Understandings Literacy? What does the term literacy mean to you?. And the term math literacy?. And science literacy? Chattanooga 2

General Understandings. How does the student achieve math. and/or science literacy? What do you (the teacher) do to promote math or science literacy? Chattanooga 3

Reading and Math/Science Performance. What role does reading instruction have in a science or math lesson? A look at the standards~ Chattanooga 4

Comprehension of the Math and Science Lesson Comprehension Phonological Awareness Phonics Vocabulary Fluency Metacognitive Strategies Chattanooga 5

Student Performance in Math and Science Math and Science Literacy Understanding Informational Texts Fluency Vocabulary Metacognitiv e Strategies Chattanooga 6

What is vocabulary? Knowledge of word meanings Chattanooga 7

and why does vocabulary matter? We think with words... The person who knows more words can speak, and even think, more precisely. Stahl and Nagy, 2006 Chattanooga 8

In your math or science class, if the student doesn t know the meaning of a word~ how does this impact his/her understanding of math concepts and operations? how does this impact overall performance? how do you teach math and science vocabulary? Chattanooga 9

Teaching Vocabulary through Writing A demonstration: The Acrostic Chattanooga 10

The Acrostic and the Academic Vocabulary sad Math and Science Implementing the strategy~. Reinforcing the academic vocabulary with word walls So, what are the benefits of this strategy? Benefits across ability levels? Chattanooga 11

Just a little more about the role of vocabulary in the math and science classroom~ Vocabulary at the end of the third grade is the most significant predictor of reading success in high school and overall performance across content areas. Cunningham and Stanovich Chattanooga 12

Nagy (1988; 2005) determined that there are three key properties of effective vocabulary instruction: Integration Repetition and Meaningful use Chattanooga 13

The Elements of Effective Vocabulary Instruction Integration new information connects to previous knowledge and experiences as well as to content Repetition frequent exposure to the same words using a variety of strategies and providing intensive practice Meaningful use less, not more; depth, not breadth; knowing how to use a word rather than just knowing what it means. Teacher modeling a language-rich environment in which the teacher demonstrates strategies for learning vocabulary Chattanooga 14

Creating Word Wizards Teaching vocabulary all day, every day. Establishing on-going strategies that encourage word consciousness. Chattanooga 15

Mathematical Literacy: Vocabulary and Technical Reading Vocabulary Metacognition Fluency Chattanooga 16

What parts of math and science are most difficult for your students? How can vocabulary instruction help your students understanding of these math and science concepts/processes? Today we looked at the importance of vocabulary. Next, we ll look at other reading strategies to help your students. Chattanooga 17
