2 Course description This 2-days course is specifically designed to teach perioperative and critical care echocardiography at a basic and advanced level. The basic course will focus on cardiac anatomy and correlation with echocardiographic-imaging planes, principles of echocardiography, image recognition testing and a comprehensive review of a basic echo (TTE and TEE) examination, including a hands-on session for machine operation and image optimization. An interactive pre- and post-course examination is offered to test individual knowledge in basic echocardiography. The advanced course will focus on echocardiography in perioperative clinical decision-making related to cardiac function, valvular heart disease and aortic pathology, including the use of ultrasound in the critical care unit. The major teaching method is interactive problem-based learning discussions. The advanced course concludes with a simulated preparatory examination for European Accreditation in Adult Transesophageal Echocardiography including multiple choice questions, video clips and explanations. Two optional workshops complete the course and require pre-registration. The surgical cardiac anatomy wet lab with live dissection will contribute to a better knowledge of anatomical and echocardio-graphic correlations on cardiac anatomy. The wet lab is limited to 50 participants. During a hands-on regional anesthesia and vascular access workshop the use of ultrasound for these specific applications can be practiced and is limited to 20 participants. Who should attend This course on perioperative echocardiography is designed for anesthesiologists, intensivists, cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and residents in these specialties involved in the perioperative and intensive care of cardiac and non-cardiac surgical patients. Accreditation The course is accredited by the Dutch Society of Anesthesiology (15 hours) and the Belgian Society of Anaesthesia and Reanimation (12 points). Organizing Committee J.L. Canivet H.H.M.
