Training Design Document Template WECC January 2015 About this Document There are many different methods to design training. This document is a template to be used as a guide. As with all templates, use it to fit your circumstances and needs. Each section contains a description of how it is meant to be used. The description is enclosed in brackets [ ] and is intended to be replaced with your own text. This template contains all of the elements you should find in a training program beginning with a description and ending with a closing. It is recommended to use every element for a complete training. Table of Contents Table of Contents Table of Contents... 1 Description... 2 NERC CEH Credits... 2 Stakeholders/SMEs/Sponsors/Trainers... 2 Course/Class Performance Objectives... 2 Welcome... 2 Icebreaker... 3 Overview... 3 Connect Activity... 3 Class Topics... 3 Topic 1: Title... 4 Topic 2: Title... 5 Major Review... 6 Pre-Close... 6 Evaluation... 6 Close... 6 WESTERN ELECTRICITY COORDINATING COUNCIL 155 North 400 West, Suite 200 Salt Lake City, Utah
Training Design Document Template 2 Description [A description is a representation of the subject. It states what the subject is and is not. State the look, feel and features of the subject.] NERC CEH Credits Operations: Standards: Simulation: Stakeholders/SMEs/Sponsors/Trainers [List people who will review and sign-off on the training design before you move forward to develop the training] Name Title/Job Role Sign off? Training Role Course/Class Performance Objectives [List the performance or behavior that will be different after the training. This objective should be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timely.] Welcome [This is the opening of the training, where you would state your name as the instructor and your aim, why you are there.]
Training Design Document Template 3 Icebreaker [The purpose of an icebreaker is to help the learners become familiar with each other. It can be as simple as going around the room with introductions or you can plan a group activity that suits the audience and the topic to get them warmed up.] Big Picture Overview [Now that the audience knows you, knows your purpose, and they are warmed up to each other, you state an overview of the training such as the agenda, lunch schedules, logistics, etc.] Connect Activity [A connect activity is something that connects the learners to what they are there to learn. This is the first point in the opening where you get the learners settled in to start making connections to what they already know and to what they are going to learn. One example is to record a list of Expectations and Concerns. This technique helps you asses the audience and it can be used it at the end of training as a summary of topics covered or not covered. It is recommended to not skip this step.] Class Topics Following is the rotation of class topics.
Training Design Document Template 4 Topic 1: Title Learning Objective(s): [List the learning objectives for this topic. These learning objectives should support the course/class performance objectives.] [Example: At the completion of this training, you will be able to:] [ ] Design Item Design Item Content Est. Time WHY Content WHY Process WHAT Content WHAT Process HOW Content HOW Process WHAT IF Content WHAT IF Process MINI REVIEW [Why should/does the learner care about this topic? WIIFM?] [How are you going to teach: lecture, demonstration, video, activity, etc.?] [What are you going to teach? For example, for hands on teaching best practice would be 1) show the learners the steps, 2) let the learners do the steps with you, 3) have the learners do it on their own.] [How are you going to teach: lecture, demonstration, video, activity, etc.?] [First the learners learned what the topic or process is. This step is to expand into more of how it is done. This can be an additional exercise or scenario from the What step above.] [This is intended to be a little more advanced for the learner than the What step above, how are you going to teach: lecture, demonstration, video, activity, etc. in a little more advanced way?] [Now that the learner knows why, what and how, What If something was different? What If something went wrong? This step is intended to provide an opportunity for the learner to transfer their learning to a different situation.] [How are you going to teach: lecture, demonstration, video, activity, etc.?] [This can be any kind of review from informal Q&A session to a formal test/exam] Total Time *See note below
Training Design Document Template 5 Design Item Design Item Content Est. Time VAK Balance Materials [When planning the training process, do you have a visual, audio and kinesthetic balance? It is optional to make a list here) [Make a list of supplies needed for your teaching process. For example, PPT, projector, screen, easels, pens, post-its, show-and-tell items, video clips, paper, computers, etc. This will build into your checklist of items to pack for training] *Note: Time is recorded in minutes and hours. For example, the why section may only take 3-5 minutes. The what section may 1 hour. Once all the time elements are added up for the total, you know if you have too much time and if you need to cut content or if you need to have more time for the training. Topic 2: Title Learning Objective(s): Design Item Design Item Content Est. Time WHY Content WHY Process WHAT Content WHAT Process HOW Content HOW Process WHAT IF Content WHAT IF Process MINI REVIEW Total Time VAK Balance Materials
Training Design Document Template 6 Major Review [This is where you would do an assessment to determine if the participants learned.] Pre-Close [The pre-close is a summary and meant to be short.] Evaluation [The standard Level 1 evaluation is done here.] Close [The close should be a short, inspirational quote and/or a call to action (now that you have taught something, what do you want your participants to do with it)?].
