5 PROCESS FOR SELECTION OF STUDENTS 1. PRIORITY SELECTION a. All applicants who have submitted a completed application with required documentation (TSI complete, transcripts and passing entrance exam scores submitted, and 2.5 GPA or better on a 4.0 scale for ALL previous college courses) will be considered for priority selection according to the point system. Cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) is based on grade points earned from all colleges. b. If all qualified applicants with at least a 2.5 GPA are selected (and spaces are still available), applicants with at least a 2.0 cumulative GPA will be considered. 2. POINT SYSTEM FOR SELECTION a. A point will be given for each of the general education courses in the ADN program (8) and for each of the remaining gereral education courses for teh BSN program (9) completed with a grade of C or better (see list under ADN curriculum) = 17 points. b. A point will be given if the student received a grade of A on the first attempt of Anatomy & Physiology I (BIOL 2401 or SCIT 1407). A W counts as a first attempt. c. A point will be given if at least 15 semester credit hours have been successfully completed at TVCC (does not include CLEP hours). d. Points will be given based on cumulative GPA: Two points will be given for cumulative GPA between 3.5 and 4.0. One point will be given for cumulative GPA between 3.0 and e. The MAXIMUM NUMBER of points for selections is 21. f. The MINIMUM NUMBER of points for selections is 3 (prerequisites). 3. HOW SELECTIONS ARE MADE a. Applicants with the highest number of points will be selected for the program. b. If all applicants from the highest category (21) are selected, students will be chosen from the next category (20) and so on. c. In the event that there are more applicants in one category than the number of spaces available, the applicant s current TVCC course load will be the first tie breaker and number of ADN core courses completed will be the second tie breaker. d. In case of further ties, random selection will be used. e. In 2012, applicants from 13 points down to the top of those with ten points were selected. There is no historical data for the new point total of 21. Applicants are encouraged to meet with the HSC counselor to determine how to maximize their points. 4. NOTIFICATION OF SELECTED APPLICANTS a. All qualified applicants will be sent an regarding their acceptance status by the end of March. Applicants will be asked to send a return e- mail with written acceptance or non-acceptance of their position (either selected or alternate) by a specified date. Applicants who don t respond by -4-

6 the deadline will be removed from the list and the applicant will have to re-apply to be considered for the next year s process. b. If a student has applied to the ADN program and has not received notification regarding acceptance into the program by April 5th, it is the student s responsibility to contact the HSC Counselor in Kaufman before April 10th to clarify the situation. c. In the event of open positions, eligible applicants will be moved up the list and these candidates will be notified. The alternate list will be maintained until the program begins in the fall semester. d. Applicants who are not selected and those who decline a position must re-apply the next year in order to be considered in the next year s selection process. e. Students who are selected for the ADN program will be required to attend an orientation session at the Kaufman Health Science Center in late April or May and July. When planning trips/vacations, check the website by January 1 st for important orientation dates. Failure to attend will result in forfeiture of place in the program. f. The selections procedure may change as the situation warrants. Because of the way the selections process works, we cannot estimate or guarantee how long it will take to be selected. This will vary each year according to the number of applicants, their progress on the general education courses, the number of courses taken at Trinity Valley, and their cumulative GPA. OTHER INFORMATION Blackboard is used to enhance the nursing courses so students must have access to the internet. Due to computerized charting in many facilities, students must have good keyboarding skills. Students who hunt and peck are encouraged to take a keyboarding course. Students who don t have any healthcare experience should seek out volunteer opportunities in a hospital to get a better idea of what nursing will entail. Students who have any questions regarding the application and selection processes or general information regarding any of the health occupations programs should contact the counselor or the Health Science Center Provost. It is the student s responsibility to notify the Health Science Center if there is any change in name, address, address or telephone number. In order to accommodate more students in the ADN program, some lectures may be delivered via videoconferencing to the Athens campus. Students will still have to go to the HSC in Kaufman for certain activities, and skills may be offered at the ETMC Education Center. Prior to starting clinical experiences the student must have a current healthcare provider CPR card, provide a completed physical exam and negative TB test (or -5-

7 chest x-ray if student has a positive TB test), and submit documentation of immunizations or immunity to specific diseases as required by law and clinical site including tetanus/diphtheria/acellular pertussis, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, hepatitis B and influenza. Current immunizations and the physical form can be downloaded from the HSC website under Miscellaneous/Forms. Because the Hepatitis B series of three vaccines takes several months, applicants are encouraged to get started as soon as possible. New students under 30 must have the meningitis vaccine before registering at TVCC All students enrolled in a health occupations program are required to have a negative criminal background and registry checks and drug screen prior to beginning clinical rotations. Details about the requirements for background check and drug screens will be provided in orientation. Any nursing applicant who has been arrested, convicted of a crime other than a minor traffic violation, diagnosed with, treated, or hospitalized in the past five years for schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders, bipolar disorder, paranoid personality disorder, antisocial personality disorder, or borderline personality disorder, or addicted to or treated for the use of alcohol or any other drug within the past five years, must petition the Texas Board of Nursing for a declaratory order concerning their eligibility to take the licensing examination, the NCLEX-RN. The Texas Board of Nursing can be reached at (512) The application for a declaratory order can be downloaded from the BON website at state.tx.us/olv/forms.html. This declaratory order must be completed before the student starts nursing courses. Applications are taken for various student scholarships to be awarded for the next semester. Submit a completed scholarship application before the designated deadlines to the HSC Provost, TVCC, 800 Ed Hall Drive, Kaufman, TX If all qualified applicants have been selected and there are still available positions in the ADN program, students will be notified on the HSC web site if late applications will be accepted. The ADN program uses diagnostic testing from HESI throughout the program. If the disignated passing score is not achieved, the student must complete required remediation, but achievement of the required score is not required for progression in the program or graduation. -6-
