Course Description: The purpose of this course is to provide nursing students with understanding of the technical, user, and environmental factors that need to be considered in building computerized clinical nursing information systems to provide quality information that supports nursing care and resource decisions. This course will focus on methods of identifying necessary changes to improve cost, quality, and access to care 1

A- Aims: The course aims to introduce students' to the basic concepts and principles of computer technology in nursing and utilize the knowledge in clinical, administrative, research, and educational decision making. B- Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs): Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to 1. Knowledge and Understanding 1.1. Identify the role of the nurse in handling health care data 1.2. Recognize what networks are and the major types of network configurations 1.3. Identify the various types of information systems used within health care institutions 1.4. List and describe the different components of a basic database system 1.5. Describe threats to information quality, availability, and confidentiality Describe the factors that contribute to effective staff training 2. Intellectual Analytical and Cognitive Skills 2.1. Describe the impact of computer technology on professional nursing practice Discuss the new emerging computer technologies in nursing and how they impact patient Differentiate between the nursing process and critical pathways/protocol approaches to the design of nursing systems 2.4. Explain the importance of using strategic planning in determining the organization's information needs 2.5. Discuss the importance of network integration for health care delivery 2.6. 6 21. Teaching Methods and Assignments: Development of ILOs is promoted through the following teaching and learning methods: Interactive lectures. Group discussions. Application exercises. 22. Evaluation Methods and Course Requirements: Opportunities to demonstrate achievement of the ILOs are provided through the following assessment methods and requirements: Midterm exam: 30% (Mon. 16/11/2015 (5-6 pm)) Assignments/Project: 20% Final exam: 50% (To be announced) 23. Course Policies: A- Attendance policies: a. Students must attend all classes of this course. b. Any student with absence of 15% of the classes of any course, will be illegible to sit for the final exam and will be given the university zero (F grade) in this course. c. In the case (b) above, if a student submits an official sick report authenticated by university clinic or an accepted excuse by the Dean of his/her faculty, the student will be considered as withdrawn from the course, and a "W" will be shown in the transcript for this course. d. Students are not allowed to come late to classes. Any student coming late will not be allowed to attend the class and he/she will be marked absent. B- Absences from exams and handing in assignments on time: a. Failure in attending a course exam other than the final exam will result in zero mark unless the student provides an official acceptable excuse to the instructor who approves a make up exam. b. Failure in attending the final exam will result in zero mark unless the student presents an official acceptable excuse to the Dean of his/her faculty who approves an incomplete exam, normally scheduled to be conducted during the first two weeks of the successive semester. c. Assignments and projects should be submitted to the instructor on the due date. C- Honesty policy regarding cheating, plagiarism, misbehavior: Cheating, plagiarism, misbehavior are attempts to gain marks dishonestly and includes; but not limited to: 5 Copying from another student s work. Using materials not authorized by the institute. Collaborating with another student during a test, without permission. Knowingly using, buying, selling, or stealing the contents of a test. Plagiarism which means presenting another person s work or ideas as one s own, without attribution.
7 Using any media (including mobiles) during the exam. D- Grading policy: A grade of (D) is the minimum passing grade for the course.
