2 Financial Aid Counselor Geoffrey Wynn is a very accomplished individual and has over six years of financial aid experience. Geoffrey worked with the Florida Department of Education Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA) as a Default Prevention Representative, counseling postsecondary and high school students on financial aid, student loan repayment, career planning after college, and credit management. After working with the Department of Education, he worked with Keiser University in Jacksonville, FL as a financial aid officer where he counseled prospective and attending students on financial aid, processed all new and recurring financial aid requests (both federal and private loans), and was the Certifying Official to handle all Veterans Administration financial aid claims for financial aid. Geoffrey is currently pursuing his Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) at Columbia Southern University in Orange Beach, AL where he has achieved candidacy status as of January 2012, and his goal is to finish by He obtained his Master s degree in Business Administration (MBA) from Florida Metropolitan University (now Everest University) in 2004 with an emphasis on International Business. Geoffrey received his Bachelor in Health Science and Policy from the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) in 2000 with an emphasis on Health Services Administration. Prior to the preceding degrees he graduated with an Associate in Arts from Prince Georges Community College (PGCC) in 1993 with an emphasis on Marketing Management. Geoffrey also has experience outside of financial aid as a director at a national medical association located in Jacksonville, FL, and he was a restaurant manager while pursuing his bachelor s degree for approximately five years. 3 NSU Alumna, Linda Levin, is passionate about helping the elderly. It is a choice. It is important to work with the elderly. I chose to as my life s career. She has spent the last 20 years working with various area agencies on aging. Levin graduated from Nova Southeastern University with a Master s of Science in Gerontology and holds a Bachelor s degree in Psychology from the University of Florida. Currently, Levin is the Executive Director of ElderSource. Their mission is to empower elders with independence and dignity by providing direction, advocacy, leadership, and support for continued care. Levin and her employees provide services for adults 60 and older, disabled adults, and their caregivers in seven different counties throughout Northeast Florida. Levin credits NSU with giving her the tools necessary to succeed. NSU is where I got my Masters, it s my Alma Mater, and it has made my career possible. My degree is valuable. Her degree has allowed her to work where her heart is: caring for and serving the elderly. Levin also founded the Kehillah Chadashah, a Reconstructionist congregation, and recently received an award from Southeastern Agency on Aging for her work in helping the elderly. She advises students to, Start with the end in mind. If you know what you what to achieve, take the steps necessary to achieve it. Make sure you always keep that goal in front of you. If you are only concerned with today s class, you can lose focus, but if you know that s three credits closer, you can take the steps to get there. I can say this because I worked full time while working on my Master s degree. A goal helps you stay on track. Supportive family, building relationships, and networking help you keep your goal. Don t burn bridges and remember to make those connections!

4 Financial Aid The NSU Office of Student Financial Assistance administers federal, state, and institutional aid programs such as grants, scholarships, federal work-study funds and loans. In order to be eligible for these programs, students must complete the free FAFSA application. Apply for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at using 2011 (1040) tax returns. 5 On Sunday March, 27 th, at the 2012 National Medical Challenge Bowl annual conference, the Nova Southeastern University-Jacksonville student team of Whitney Boid, Kara Forinash, and Tomas Pieniazek coached by Angela Dunaway, PharmD, PA-C won the competition. They not only beat 48 competitive teams from other Universities but they also beat three fellow members from our NSU-SEC sites.

6 Nova Southeastern University Jacksonville and Wal-Mart sponsored the Jacksonville Diversity Council Meeting on Tuesday, May 15th. Twenty-five members and board members met to discuss best diversity practices and upcoming events. The Florida Diversity Council s mission is to promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace and community by developing, supporting, and educating leaders from diverse communities within all industries. May s educational segment discussed media representation of women. Members engaged in a 10 minute documentary entitled, Miss Representation, and actively participated in a 20 minute open discussion about the sexual representation of women in media. 7 On Saturday, June 2 nd roughly 19 students attended the APA event. It was presented by the distance and instructional services librarian from the main campus, who came here to Jacksonville to teach students how to (1) use new APA guidelines, (2) brush up on APA rules when writing a paper, (3) navigate the NSU library website, (4) access 300,000 online journals and articles, (5) and she answered all APA questions. The event was broken into 2 sections. The first section was from noon 1:00 pm to discuss the APA writing and the second section was from 1:00 pm 2:00 pm on Online Research.
