Schools focus on academic and life skills. WorkOne Centers address the community s employment needs. By working together, schools and WorkOne Centers can strengthen students career plans, enhance classroom curriculum, offer students opportunities to gain marketable skills, provide information about local employers, teach job seeking and job retention skills, and offer job placement services. Many WorkOne Centers services are available to all individuals, while others require meeting eligibility criteria. WorkOne Centers are designed to provide a full range of assistance to job seekers under one roof. Established under the Workforce Investment Act, the centers offer training referrals, career counseling, job listings and similar employment-related services. WorkOne Centers Benefits to Teachers & Transition Coordinators Participate on IEP team to support the attainment of employment-related goals. Provide information to job coaches, teachers, parents, and students on employment issues. Connect students, parents, and teachers with appropriate community services. Enhance curriculum by providing resources or offering student instruction. WorkOne Staff May... Creative Collaborations Co-sponsor a transition fair during a school day that is off-campus and is focused on students interests. Co-sponsor and organize job fairs for high school students and parents. Co-sponsor and organize career days with alumni of the high school working in a variety of occupations. Host an information booth at school-sponsored events (i.e., job fair, open house, transition fair). Meet with students during designated schedule in the high school. Staff availability is highlighted in the school announcements and/or newspapers. Offer after-school activities for youth either at the school or at the WorkOne Center with refreshments. 6 3
6 4 Collaborate with the chamber of commerce to offer resume workshop/job search workshop in the spring prior to spring break or summer vacation. Instruct students on job seeking skills in high school career exploration course. Arrange mock interviews with employers for students. Co-sponsor an awards luncheon at the end of the school year for students, teachers and employers to highlight the many successes. Develop an Information Resource Area (IRA) or WorkOne Express site in the high school. Meet with teachers on regular basis for Q & A. Support the school to develop a transition newsletter and be a regular contributor. Offer career interest and skills assessments to students in the high school. Connections to Employment WorkOne Staff May... Share knowledge about local labor market and employers. Organize and support business tours and job shadowing experiences with local employers. Arrange for youth mentors in the business community. Participate in the community transition council and the creation of interagency agreements. Offer WorkOne Centers as internship sites for students. Create a directory of local employers with specific details about their jobs, their qualifications, what the employer looks for in employees. Collaboration with Educators High school teachers train WorkOne Center staff on sign language, Spanish, or other areas of need. WorkOne Centers and its partners become a part of the regular teacher in-service session to share information about all partners services. Co-sponsor guest speaker/training for teachers based on teachers feedback for professional development related to employment topics. Develop a newsletter or an distribution to give monthly updates and/or ideas for improving services for youth with disabilities in the WorkOne Center. Provide tours of WorkOne Centers to educators, job coaches and other transition personnel at the beginning of the school year to learn about the facility and available services. Provide educators CS-3 training enabling them to enroll students and access job matches. Assist with development of career portfolio including resume, worksite photographsor video clips, worksite evaluations, reference letters and work support strategies. 5
